All of us old enough to remember 9/11 have our own personal memories and mine are: 1) though I have never lived in New York I have deep ties to the city, and the wanton destruction and murder left a particular wound in me 2) I'm overwhelmed by the solidarity shown by the world, Canada especially.

I've blocked a good number of people so I'll doubt any Trumpies will read this but nevertheless, on this day I say: God Bless America, thank you to everyone who shared the grief of that day. A very special thanks to Canada, and Fuck You to that shit stain Trump and anybody who supports him.

After an hour-long phone call, American Airlines were able to tell me that their plane had diverted to Halifax and they were safe and sound.

They spent five or six days in a school gym somewhere near Halifax. Our Canadian brothers and sisters opened their generous hearts to them and several hundred strangers and gave them safety, shelter, food, and comfort.

Too stunned to do much of anything I went home, turned on the TV and put a blank tape on the VCR. I set it on Long Duration record and left. Years later I had it transferred to DVD and have not yet watched those 6 hours, perhaps I will tonight.

It took several hours for my distressed brain to realize that my parents were supposed to be (and indeed were) flying back from Europe on an American Airlines flight that same day.
