BREAKING: Canadian PM Mark Carney suspends all trade negotiations with the U.S. after “unfair, uneconomic” last-minute changes to the deal. At midnight the U.S. will implement a 50% tariff on ~$28 billion of Canadian goods, and now, Canada will match it dollar-for-dollar.

The US economy took several years to rebuild and it wasn’t until World War 2 that the economy boomed again. Many similarities to today although, the world economy was on the rise in 2024 with a positive 2025 outlook. 6/

US unemployment was 8% before tariffs, 16% by 1931 and 25% by 1932. Falling demand and unregulated banking practices that triggered the Great Depression was expanded significantly by the Tariff act and spiralled the US economy downward. 4/

In 1932, Franklin D Roosevelt and Democrats campaigned on lower tariffs. FDR won the Presidency and Democrats took the House of Representatives. Hoover only served one term. Smoot and Hawley were not reelected in 1932 after long political careers. 5/

Hoover won in 1928 with majorities in both houses. Smoot was a senator from 1903 and Hawley a Congressman from 1907. All 3 were Republicans. The tariff act was signed by Hoover in June 1930. The act intensified nationalism all over the world and was met with retaliation 2/

Canada, the US closest trading partner, retaliated on 30% of exports and developed deeper trading relationships with Europe. Trading partners began boycotts and retaliatory tariff threats before the law was enacted. After enactment, US exports dropped 66% 3/

The $400,000,000 Trump is withholding from Columbia University is no arbitrary amount. It was the amount Donald wanted Columbia to pay him for land he owned. They refused. And Donald was furious. That was 25 years ago. And petty Donald has not forgotten.
