Looks like the long-awaited bike lanes on Cortelyou and Dorchester are finally going in!

Flatbush Streets for People@flatbushstreetsforpeople.com

We are excited to hear that @mayor.nyc.gov is prioritizing the long-delayed bike lane network in Flatbush, East Flatbush, and Midwood. We have been advocating for this network for years, both to protect cyclists and to improve safety for all road users in our neighborhoods.

The city is hosting a Central Brooklyn Bus Riders Town Hall next Thursday, August 6, 6-7:30. Looks like a good opportunity to learn more about the plans and show your support for reliable and fast buses in our area! RSVP here: organize.nyc.gov/fastbuses

Most notably, "NYC DOT and MTA will deliver new rapid bus service along the full length of the Flatbush Avenue corridor by 2030." We're pleased to see them recognize that riders all along Flatbush Ave, especially where subway stations are rarer, need fast and reliable buses!

Beyond the above rapid bus corridors, we can also look forward to general investments across 50 total "Priority Corridors." In our area, this additionally includes Avenue J and Kings Highway. For this year, DOT is committing to capital work on the Kings Highway corridor.

We're happy to see the commitment to bus service improvements on the full length of Flatbush Ave called out on their summary page, and of course we're also looking forward to the numerous city-wide improvements, including all-door boarding, better bus stops, and newer buses.

Flatbush Ave is one of five corridors where DOT plans to bring "world-class rapid bus service." Utica Ave is another, and a third will expand on the small segment of bus lanes installed on Church Ave in 2019, running through Kensington, Flatbush, and East Flatbush.

For more on the history of this proposed network and DOT's delays, see this thread we posted last year. We're looking forward to finally seeing these improvements on our streets! bsky.app/profile/flat...

Our campaign, along with @tabk.bsky.social and CM Rita Joseph, sent a letter to @nyc-dot.bsky.social and the Mayor urging them to protect bicyclists and all users of the streets in our neighborhoods, calling out almost a decade of inaction from the city: flatbushstreetsforpeople.com/uploads/flat...

TONIGHT! Instead of our regular monthly organizing meeting, we're joining our friends at Open Plans and New Yorkers for Parks for a social hour at Bad Therapy Bar (Cortelyou and CIA) to chat all things community boards. See you there, 6-8 PM!

We're really disappointed to hear that the bike lane network in Community District 14, including protected bike lanes on Cortelyou and Dorchester Roads, will not be installed this year as DOT originally presented. We're hearing they're targeting installation for next year.

Protected bike lanes are proven solutions that make streets safer for everyone: pedestrians, bicyclists, and drivers.

We're disappointed to see this very small school safety project get scaled back even more. Brooklyn and Kingston Avenues have plenty of space to ensure people are safe no matter what mode of transportation they choose. nyc.streetsblog.org/2025/09/08/d...

We're saddened to hear a 70-year-old man was hit and killed by a car while crossing the street in Midwood. Our streets need to be designed to prioritize pedestrian safety - no one should die just trying to walk around our neighborhoods. brooklyn.news12.com/police-70-ye...

Others pointed out that the DOT had been presenting on the need for bike infrastructure for years and they were happy to see movement. We covered the lack of action from the DOT in this thread in February: bsky.app/profile/flat...

In 2023, DOT returned with a plan for painted lanes and a potential for protected bike lanes and received feedback that this was a positive and important step. In 2024 they again presented the same plan with almost no progress (which we livetweeted at the time: x.com/FlatbushSts4...).
