Brooklyn streets should be safer and easier to get around by bus and bike. @cmcrystalhudson.bsky.social, @chiosse.bsky.social, @cmrestler.bsky.social, and @bkbpreynoso.bsky.social all agree: It's time to redesign Dekalb and Lafayette for people.

tabk.bsky.social@tabk.bsky.social

Last month we sent a letter to the @mayor.nyc.gov and @nyc-dot.bsky.social urging them to prioritize a people first redesign of Dekalb and Lafayette, providing faster buses, safe east/west bike routes, and safer intersections. Our local elected officials joined in signing.

These are critical east/west routes, but have long been plagued by car traffic, double parking, and slowdowns to the B38 buses which are relied upon by thousands of people. Additionally, the heavily used bike lane is frequently blocked by double parking.

Replying to @flatbushstreetsforpeople.com

For more on the history of this proposed network and DOT's delays, see this thread we posted last year. We're looking forward to finally seeing these improvements on our streets! bsky.app/profile/flat...

Flatbush Streets for People@flatbushstreetsforpeople.com

Our campaign, along with @tabk.bsky.social and CM Rita Joseph, sent a letter to @nyc-dot.bsky.social and the Mayor urging them to protect bicyclists and all users of the streets in our neighborhoods, calling out almost a decade of inaction from the city: flatbushstreetsforpeople.com/uploads/flat...

Court Street rocks!!

Not only do boulders ensure pedestrian islands remain for pedestrians (not cars), but they also provide a much needed place to sit. In a world where benches and public seating are basically nonexistent, the boulders offer a welcome reprieve for dogs and humans alike!

We're really disappointed to hear that the bike lane network in Community District 14, including protected bike lanes on Cortelyou and Dorchester Roads, will not be installed this year as DOT originally presented. We're hearing they're targeting installation for next year.

On Wednesday, a pedestrian was struck and killed by a box truck on Morgan Ave near Cooper Park. Members of the community are gathering tonight for an emergency action in response to this tragedy - both to honor the life lost and to call on the city to take urgent steps to make Morgan Ave safe.

Streetsblog made a great video explaining why there's a gap in the bike lane on Ashland Place! #crashland We're gonna keep fighting until we get this fixed! You can show your support here: tiny.cc/closethegap

NYC built a two-way bike lane on Brooklyn's Ashland Place back in 2023... so why isn't it done yet? You can thank former mayoral aide Ingrid Lewis-Martin, and her meddling on behalf of a developer 👀 youtube.com/shorts/2PbQo...

The hearing for @cmjuliewon.bsky.social's Intro 1138 to make universal daylighting the law in NYC is one week away! I'm thrilled that my representative CM Hudson sponsors this bill — and I look forward to seeing her fight to get it across the finish line. NYC needs universal daylighting!

The 2022 design also included significant safety improvements for pedestrians and cyclists on Hanson Place, between the Atlantic Center and the One Hanson Place. They proposed increasing pedestrian space, which today is usually occupied by double parking and lots of traffic:

This is a busy intersection where people usually outnumber cars! Happy to see them voice support for a safer, more vibrant Downtown Brooklyn, and closing a critical gap in the connection from the 4th ave protected bike lane to the new protected lanes on Ashland and Navy.

"Open Streets are critical components of our city's public realm and streetscape, offering vital community programs and gathering space," @council.nyc.gov and Mayor Adams need to fund Open Streets!

Open streets are a refuge for me - places to meet up more safely outdoors and a small breath of fresh air among NYC's primarily car-dominated streets. City government needs to make sure this incredible vibrant program has what it needs to thrive. nyc.streetsblog.org/2025/03/14/o...

People who live, work, and visit Downtown Brooklyn deserve a welcoming and safe experience. This project sits at the heart of many of our local institutions & important transit corridor, and the project would bring significant benefits to the immediate block as well as the surrounding area.

We are thankful for their support - this project is an important link in the Brooklyn protected bike lane network, helping connect the bridges and downtown Brooklyn with the 4th ave lane which goes all the way down to Bay Ridge.

Even on a cold day, lots of people were out on the street and biking in the lane. We chatted with a number of folks, especially parents that want to keep their kids safe as they go about the city.

We also saw drivers parking and blocking the intersection, or even driving down the bike lane itself. The current design is confusing and unsafe! We’re glad that all of our local electeds are in favor of completing the project, which would help these drivers as well!

We’re so close to having a completely protected bike route that runs from Sunset Park to the Manhattan Bridge. That’s a pretty big deal!

Close the Gap! On Sunday, TABK was out canvassing in support of completing the Ashland/Navy protected bike lane! We are calling on @nyc-dot.bsky.social to finish the last block of this project on Ashland Pl between Lafayette and Flatbush. Please sign our petition here: tiny.cc/closethegap #crashland

The city had promised a protected bike lane on Ashland and Navy, connecting 4th Ave to Flushing Ave, providing a safe route from Bay Ridge to the Manhattan Bridge! But this block hasn’t been completed because of politics, background here: nyc.streetsblog.org/2024/10/16/t...

nyc.streetsblog.orgThe Mayor’s Ashland Pl. Compromise Remains a Safety Menace - Streetsblog New York CityThe unsafe southernmost block of Ashland Place in Brooklyn remains a hotbed for crashes and confusion.

Our local elected officials are in support! We hope that @nyc-dot.bsky.social is able to move forward with this block. It would be a quick and easy win filling in a critical gap in our protected bike network! We will continue fighting for this project to be fully completed!
