Putting a 📍 in this

Rs didn't feel this pessimistic in 2018 or 2020, Ds didn't feel this pessimistic in 2022 or even VA Ds in 2021. And the conversations I'm having with Rs make it sound like some of us in the forecasting business are about to get our shit rocked.

It has been a long time since we saw a major realignment in American politics. I think we might be see a so-called "critical election" next week. In 2010, Republicans rode the Tea Party wave and routed the Dems in every rural district possible. 2026 will be when the Dems win the Sunbelt

A point I've been making for the past 5 years or so is becoming much more clear. "The primary reason for all this concerns cost: “Unsubsidized renewable energy remains the most cost competitive form of new-build generation,” according to Lazard’s latest benchmarking analysis. "

For the past few years I've been noting that the transition to clean energy is being driven by favorable economics. More evidence. "For those with skin in the game and an eye for a good investment, clean energy has become a no-brainer."

“I’m just stunned…at the degree to which Republicans are in trouble.” - Larry Sabato, after reviewing both public and private polls and at minimum foreseeing a blue wave.

If things go as we expect/hope next week (🤞), the task of every Democrat will be to never mention the words "Donald Trump" without also saying "Republican Party" so often they're melded together in voters' minds *forever*

I know this'll make me sound like a prude, but I really, sincerely wish our politicians would stop with all the cursing.

On the same day, huge crowds are welcoming Machado back to Venezuela. Her return was blocked for months by the US-backed regime. Pressure from below finally made it impossible for Trump and Rodriguez to keep her out

In one day, two politicians - Bolsonaro in Brazil and Vucic in Serbia - with ties to Trump have lost surprise elections thanks to high turnout. The rise of the international far-right is not inevitable.

It's remarkable to me that, even as France, Germany and Spain flirt with the temptation of far-right rule, voters with long-term experience of it in Poland, Hungary and now Serbia have gone to such great efforts to rid themselves of it.

Lula winning is great for the planet, great for Brazil, and great for people who aren't revanchist assholes everywhere in the world, but let's not forget that it's also going to make some of the worst people on Earth extremely sad and mad. We should enjoy that, as a little treat.

When I first logged in today, every single commentator who supposedly knew something about this election said it was hopeless for Lula.

Anyways it'll be close and I don't want to say anything is certain but early data doesn't look great for Bolsinaro.

I find it (grimly) fascinating that many here have convinced themselves that — despite all the polling and EV we’ve seen to date — only Republicans can win elections and we’re destined to be ruled over by them forever. When the reality is that Dems win elections — all the time, actually!

Everything is much more fluid now; that causes much more anxiety, I get it. But it also means everything is up for grabs — the Republicans don’t have an irreversible hold on power any more than Dems do. (If they did, you wouldn’t see Musk, Trump, et al act the way they do.)

I mean, Dems won in 2006, 2008, 2012, 2018, 2020 (and 2021 here in GA), 2025 and loads of special elections in between. Obviously, 🙄 can’t see the future. But when I was a teenager, the GOP was thought to have a “lock” on the presidency, while the Dems had control of the House for 4 decades.

I’m not sure there’s anything he could have done anything to boost KLB’s chances more than this

This is the neoliberal blob and it has been totally ineffectual at stopping Trump fascism because it thinks the world before Trump was great. Meanwhile, most Americans have thought the country was headed in the wrong direction since 2009.

Something I find simultaneously fascinating (and tiring) is the “heads Republicans win, tails Democrats lose” school of analysis. High turnout? Well that’s bad for Dems, because that means lots of Rs are voting. Low turnout? Sorry, that’s bad for Dems too, b/c it means enthusiasm is low.

I work in manufacturing. I know everyone loves to complain thst “they don’t make them like they used to” but in most cases things are made both better and cheaper, as well as much more safely for the people building them.

Social media loves talking about how everything is getting worse. But what’s something that you’ve seen get _better_ in your lifetime?
