But experimental results for an ad don't matter of the issue is not important or low on the agenda for voters. In 2024, the economy dominated voters' attention. In contrast, in Gallup data, trans issues polled at the bottom of the league table in terms of perceived importance to voters. (4/n)

Lazy reporting and writing. Dateline New York. Guy didn’t come here or ask anyone local whether his premise was correct. Good chance this was pitched by the subject. Classic case of bad national reporting. So many issues with this piece.

There's this concept that unemployed people should "treat looking for a job like it's full time work" that doesn't really survive first contact with the *actual* labor market. There are very quickly diminishing returns to looking for work.

The URI bond proposal had me scratching my head, it's so skimpy on info. BI-DF cancer center that just broke ground in Boston is running $1.75 billion for 450,000 sq ft, close to $4K/sq ft. And here are some recent high school costs. I figure an integrated health facility would be in between.

Luckily, URI's master plan has more info. This bond ask will not be the last. Two phases to this: IHB on the ballot is phase 1 (100K sqft at $1,243/sqft). Phase 2 is the med school (126K $1,204 per). That seems cheap for something more than a high school but less than a specialized cancer center…

…and something that will need to boost its supporting facilities and resources. It also seems undersized, smaller than UMass, UConn, Vermont, Brown, and others. If we're going to invest millions on this, go big and be upfront about the total cost.

In any other admin, this would probably be the most outrageous official statement ever made by a sitting FCC director: Strongly implying that the government forbids broadcast networks from reporting on the president's falling poll numbers. (Sorry to paste from twitter but that's where he posts.)

State DOTs control most of the deadliest city streets (including this one in Memphis), but they won’t fix them bc they don’t want to constrain speed or vehicle throughput. The funding issue is bogus IMO. State DOTs always find $$ for favored roadway expansions. Urban safety just isn’t a priority.

Greg Shill@gregshill.com

Every big paper has run a story like this in recent years. Why nothing changes: “The state can’t add more crosswalks, reduce the number of lanes or lower the speed limit on Union Avenue, all of which would take time and money,“ said the state DOT, which owns the road. 🔓: www.wsj.com/us-news/the-...

Right-wing billionaires now own the Washington Post, the LA Times, CNN, CBS News, virtually every local TV station, virtually every news radio station, most local newspapers, X, Facebook, Threads, and TikTok. (Did I miss any?) They own almost the entire information environment.

Average hourly earnings, adjusted for inflation, fell 0.5 percent in September and are now back to where they were in January, 2025. That means that Americans, on average, have experienced zero real wage growth since Trump returned to office.

Harris PhD student Jacob Herbstman has an important working paper: The first I've seen to rigorously quantify the costs of aldermanic prerogative in Chicago. More stringent alders -> reduced permit activity and lower density, which means less housing supply and higher housing costs in Chicago.

There will be a lot of equivocating about all the times search warrants have been executed on members of Congress for corruption investigations and the like, and it can't be stressed enough in how many ways HSI raiding Ilhan Omar is extremely not like that.

OMG, sell the house and move to Barrington because their 12-point margin over Vartan's 4th graders on "Determine whether quotations from the passage are examples of a main idea or a detail" is so much more impt than their 11-point lag on "Identify the text feature that best organizes the passage."

Perhaps this does not sway you. But surely 12 point superiority at identifying "a sentence that uses a word in the same way it is used in the passage" far outweighs trailing by 10 points on "identify a character's motivation and choose a quotation from the story that best supports that motivation."

6YO:"I'm the fastest; I'm even faster than you, Dada." M: "No you aren't. Maybe in six or seven years." 6YO: "Yes I am. I can run faster than you now." M: "I appreciate your confidence but will not stand for lies about my speed." 6YO: "You're lying to yourself. I can run at Ludicrous Speed!"

I don't see anything erratic here. For over a decade, Trump has prioritised "getting along with Russia"; since 20 January 2025, Trump administration policy has reflected that priority. It's perhaps the most consistent aspect of Trump foreign policy. 🧵on Trump and sanctions.

I am in Cap Haitien interviewing people deported from the United States. I have been doing this kind of work for almost a decade and it literally does not get more dire than this. People have lost everything they built in the U.S. and are terrified and have no place to go or way to live.
