Yesterday our senior pup Willis turned 7. Bday treat? Roulade w/layers of pastry, shrimp mousse, and ground bison, larded w/young Manchego. Slices served over (commmercial) demiglacé and frosted with grated Parmesan.

Date night cook-the-book: Mardanbigi/Rico/Goode, _From Tacos to Tadhig_ (part 2) Persian dishes Albaloo polo (cherry rice [with "meat"balls] Kuku sabzi ba mahi (herb frittata with fish) Sholeh zard (rice pudding; supposedly inauthentic, but I couldn't say how)

I was going to cite @prasad.bsky.social but then I realized I saw this because of his repost. :)

Every year, Research!America does a poll that asks, "Can you name a living scientist?" In January 2026, 76% of respondents said "no." Of those who said "yes," 5% named a scientist who was, in fact, dead. www.researchamerica.org/blog/can-you...

Date night cook-the-book: Mardanbigi/Rico/Goode, _From Tacos to Tadhig_ “American” sectio (ie the restaurant menu) Beet tartare tostadas Grilled carrot tostadas Red lentil soup with chochoyotes [not shown: mutant shaped mochi churros] Also a little crema and salsa macha.

I wish Ken Paxton would protect puppies the way he protects pedophiles.

Team Talarico@teamtalaricohq.bsky.social

Unearthed documents just revealed Ken Paxton, as Attorney General, protected a research lab that tortured 400 puppies. Paxton was also one of the only Texas lawmakers to vote against a bill to hold animal abusers accountable.

"An uncompromising commitment to academic freedom, unfettered and rigorous intellectual inquiry, and institutional neutrality, even in the face of countervailing pressures." So doubtless they'll be hiring people to teach CRT?

Another cook-the-book adventure, this time Pierre Thiam’s _Simply West African_. Cw from Ll: Maman’s crispy herb-crusted chicken; Joloff rice; Pumpkin seed “egusi” stew with eggplant and collards; Harissa-roasted Brussels sprouts.

The Tufte LaTeX class is pretty, but it hasn't been updated for years and doesn't work with well with Quarto/lualatex. But with #QuartoPub you can replicate it on your own in HTML/PDF with just a little bit of customization with CSS and some preamble-y things! github.com/andrewheiss/...

Someone out there decided it would be a good idea to put a German Shepherd in charge of babysitting a bunch of Doberman puppies and they were 100% correct

The annual Classics Honor Society cooking class was last night. Aristotle was wrong; you can live (and eat) near the Equator. Roti canai from Singapore (in both fish and potato versions) Pollo pibil from the Yucatan. Yellow coconut rice with multiple toppings from Sri Lanka.

I was going to join in here, but then I realized I was stumped by the threshold question of what "my" cuisine is.

Pavel@spavel.bsky.social

What's the worst food from *your* cuisine? None of that "oh, one region over they eat some awful shit." Remove the beam from your own eye. And I'm calling dibs on aspic, so you can't pick that one. My mom threatened to make it for me the other day.

RIP Lou Zocchi, master of weird dice & creator of the d100 Zocchihedron; also a key figure in #StarTrek games history, writer of the 1st (unlicensed) ST tabletop wargame that evolved into Star Fleet Battles + publisher of Space Patrol, arguably the roleplaying game that set the tone for ST RPGs. 🖖

As a knock-on effect of this, my mother had essentially no independent credit history when my dad died 8 years ago.

Ken Hart@kenhartwriter.bsky.social

I had to look this up. It's TRUE. 😮 Before 1974, banks typically required a father's or husband's signature in order for a woman to open a credit card account. HOLEEEE SHIT. In my lifetime?!! The patriarchy really sucks. #ArtemisII

Lisa and I had our first run at Naz Deravian's new-to-us _Bottom of the Pot_. From right: •Sour cherry compote, feta, and pistachio crostini (this is not, I think, traditional). •Rice with nuts and dried fruits. •Chicken fesenjan. •Herb stew with beans and artichokes.
