An expert (? haven't actually worked in the field for a while but grad school never leaves you) in weird niche embedded GPS applications, currently teaching physics, always sipping coffee, riding bikes, wearing cardigan sweaters. (they/she/ey)

IT'S MY BIRTHDAY and i would like to shamelessly self-promote my dog comics and associated merch if that's alright with you i make a silly webcomic about my dog and then i post it online for entertainment it's called the pyr review and you should check it out (instagram: @the_pyr_review)

My brain needs chaos right now. Tried putting on some of the Thelonious Monk @bowlerhatscience.org suggested which I'll 100% revisit, I just felt the need for an absolute fire hose of music so I pivoted to Weather Report which was also too tame so I'm now listening to Gentle Giant. 🤷‍♀️

I really hope Amy Acton wins Ohio, because Vivek Ramaswamy is an absolute dumpster fire of a human being, but I'm also terrified that we'll somehow collectively forget that and it will be read into history that she won because transphobia and six more people will do it next election cycle.

Physicist William Higinbotham was born #OTD in 1910. During the Manhattan Project he was the Electronics Group leader at Los Alamos. In 1958, while working at Brookhaven Lab, he invented one of the first video games: “Tennis for Two.” It ran on an oscilloscope! 🧪 ⚛️ Image: Brookhaven National Lab

I think my ability to distinguish between "I am feeling weirdly anxious and low today" and "I am just a person having a totally normal reaction to being alive during the 2020s" might have completely vanished.

We fixed the hole in the ozone layer and Y2K so well people now think we made a whole stink over nothing.

Social media loves talking about how everything is getting worse. But what’s something that you’ve seen get _better_ in your lifetime?

one of the best parts of having no gender is there is no concern that anything can make me less of a man/woman/whatever

Just finished the first bulk supply of HRT injection supplies I ever bought after realizing the pharmacy will absolutely never do it right. I kind of want to have a Viking funeral for my sharps container or something.

I'm terrified when Acton wins it will uncritically be attributed to her rampant transphobia and nobody will ever acknowledge that Ramaswamy is so transparently awful that he'd lose to a ficus plant. Also, if we had ranked choice voting I'd be ficus, Acton, and not rank Ramaswamy at all.

Vivek Ramaswamy seeks to take political advantage of the fact that his opponent was raped as a child. But to his credit, unlike many other Republican politicians, he was not personally the rapist in question.

Ursula K. Le Guin was born #OTD in 1929. First female author to win both the Nebula & Hugo awards for Best Novel for "The Left Hand of Darkness," 1970. In total, she won 8 Hugo & 6 Nebula awards. Second woman Grand Master of the #ScienceFiction & Fantasy Writers of America. #SciFi #LitSky #BookSky

The caveat is you're going to get whatever song is tickling my brain in the exact right way now and not an unchanging list of eternal favorites. 🤷🏼‍♀️

I was riding a bit of a high using "I'm reasonably certain I'm autistic" to interpret a lifetime of experiences, thinking it'd help me take better care of myself moving into the future, but now I've gone over a cliff into "oh no, now this makes everything feel new, novel, and terrifying". 🤷🏼‍♀️

One time I was writing code to control three high voltage supplies via serial/RS-232 and for some reason it would only work if I called them 1, 2, and 4. If any one of them were indexed to 3 it would stop working.

In very fun news I learned this morning that my Beloved nonsense space facts book, The Milky Way Smells of Rum & Raspberries, is on its way to a second paperback printing. Congratulations (& thank you!!!) everyone for buying copies and emptying the warehouse 🎉🫡 🧪🔭📚

I'm listening to Loreena McKennet--streaming a pop-new age crossover playlist I made, for the record--and the phrase "1997 called and it wants it's Loreena McKennet CD back" has popped into my head.

When Grammy-winning musician Rhiannon Giddens begins playing “Old Corn Liquor,” a traditional Black American folk tune, acclaimed Chinese pipa virtuoso Wu Man recognizes similarities to Chinese pentatonic music and spontaneously joins in. The joy on their faces says it all.

I used to work in a neutrino physics lab long long ago and they are delightfully weird little buggers.

Katie Mack@astrokatie.com

A fun fact about neutrinos is that they come in three “flavors” (types) and also in three masses and you would think that this means each flavor has its own mass and you would be absolutely wrong about that.

I'm on day one of having a standing desk in my home office and I've realized that I wanted a standing desk because sometimes the physical sensation of sitting at a desk becomes overwhelming and I need to move and now I can just switch desk modes and not have to interrupt whatever I'm doing.

I figured out why my computer couldn't maintain a wifi connection and it was because I never screwed the antenna all the way in. 😅

UV jupiter says trans rights

Think you know Jupiter? In ultraviolet light, it can look like almost another planet. Dark poles, a dark Great Red Spot, one bright oval that fades. #Hubble reveals clouds and hazes the eye cannot see. 📷NASA, ESA, Hubble, Judy Schmidt apod.nasa.gov/apod/ap18101... 🧪🔭⚛️ #planetsci #astronomy
