im watching the Fantastic Four movie and it is interesting because it is quite classy - frequently looks nice, lovely score, i like the main cast. But i dont understand how it is meant to appeal to children in any conceivable way?

Think Clayface sums up the problem with the DCU so clearly - despite public confirmation that Pattinson is not DCU batman, it really tries to hedge its bets tonally and production-wise. I think it ends up lacking a really unclear POV and sense of the world it is taking place in

bah i forgot to lay out my issue in the first post. basically, you can really tell that the film wants to leave enough space that the reeves batman can get grandfathered in if they decide not to launch competing franchises. So it ends up in an awkward halfway house, kind of DCU and kind of pattinson

which, ironically, are both things gunn's superman and the reeves batman do extremely well. I am surprised at the positive reviews because, imo, it absolutely represents the identity - and production - crisis at the heart of the cinematic universe

then again, it is a film about a man who can assume different shapes but can't sustain them and ultimately loses all sense of who he is. So it is apt in a way. But overall, i thought it was utter, utter shit

america has so profoundly degraded itself

RFK: "There's five hundred million Arabs in the world. And yet they don't produce science. They don't win the Nobel Prize. They don't win the Fields Prize. They don't win the Wolf Prize. They don't produce literature."

fixing the high street runs through housing density - but do not overlook the other genius policy move, a reduction in business rates in exchange for shops making exclusive use of hand painted signage. No more plastic! We've had enough

so glad of the result from Brazil! but also is going to be a fascinating political case study - when almost half of your electorate will vote for a fascist, how do you walk them back off the edge? Democracy can't be contingent on winning every single election forever on slim margins

there are so many political problems in the world atm, i think the actual most pressing one of them all might also be the trickiest - how do you rebuild a pro-democratic consensus, nationally and internationally?

Kansas Dem Sen. nominee Adam Hamilton on trans rights: “I don’t think we should take a small group of people and bully them, pick on them, and hurt them. I understand one thing really clearly when it comes to transgender people, and that is Jesus told me I was to love my neighbor as I love myself”

also imagine sweeping generalisations about chain restaurant decor registering as *more* offensive than trump's sweeping generalisations about somalis

"The party left me. I used to be a Democrat, but know that Obama has made fun of Trump for making the White House look like a dictator designed an over-the-top chain restaurant I favor starving African children and bringing measles back"

was surprised how little folding the fool into Lear changed his character overall, as much as it shifts individual scenes. Prob the clever touch is shifting some of the fool's shadiest lines onto Goneril (like 'lear's shadow').

Cordelia is a famously light role, but this is the first production ive seen where the goneril (and regan) feel like bigger parts. Prob by design (the hat tip being casting nadine shah as G)

the mail journalists are either hoping upton kills herself, or just entirely indifferent to it

Another one here where the British press just smashed fuck out of a member of the public’s life for no good reason, just because they wanted to and nobody will stop them doing at. And they’re still going, even now.

i have four hours to kill in central Manchester which i had planned to just walk about - obv the weather is too bad for that, so i have booked for the 70mm imax The Odyssey - lovely that worked out as i have not seen a real 70mm imax film in a solid decade+

smashing pumpkins in my opinion fell of harder than almost any band. Atum in particular contains some of the worst music ive heard a band of their stature put out. But their most recent album from a couple years ago is absolutely killer. To me it was and is a full-fledged return to form.

Very useful poll here, just for what it says about Telegraph readers rather than the actual results. Truss hasn't processed her tenure and isn't capable of doing so. Perhaps her base haven't either

the bar for me will probably always be the RSC's staging a long time ago, with Greg Hicks and Kathryn Hunter. Just an absolutely glorious pairing that has never left me. I would take a lot of persuading that there has been a better fool in a hundred years

What's CRAZY is she wasn't happy with the production and performance and left the production before the transfer was done. Which in a way only makes her *more* perfect as the complete spiritual embodiment of the fool (inexplicably leaving before the end)

eg the Beattie production in Pitlochry had the role doubled with the actress playing Cordelia (tho this merger was symbolic rather than literal). Im grateful and curious to see a Fool-less production as this was how the play was done for about 200 years!

up next will be mckellen (and i dont know what's going on with the production, it may even be a one man show). And then next year, ive booked to see Roger Allam - i have been waiting for his Lear ever since he did the big soliloquy for the Guardian's 400 years celebrations, very excited

im headed down for the threlfall King Lear at the royal exchange. From what ive read, some of the productions choices (merging Lear and the Fool) are prob not how I would stage the play. But that adds to the fun when you're seeing four

think part of the joy of Lear is that, like with Hamlet, the play has odd sharp edges that forces choices and really defy a definitive interpretation - like the disappearance of the fool - so it is fun to see each of the productions i have booked treat it differently

serious mistake if true mr shue is not back for the Glee revival! the twisted truth people do not want to hear is that he carries the first two seasons! he is literally the main character of the vintage run

Was listening to the @originstorypodcast.bsky.social about the antivaxx movement, and how once vaccinations do their job people forget why we ever introduced them. The thought occurs there's a parallel with the infrastructure that gave us modern living standards.
