We've done this in a smaller scale at @winchester.gov.uk. Much of our recent council housing is S106 obligations, but some is so-called "additionality" where we buy new market housing for council use.

I wonder if there's a case for government acting as buyer of last resort, promising to absorb any new homes the market can't to create stability of demand?

Jim Pickard@pickardje.bsky.social

Andy Burnham’s government has privately given up on reaching Labour’s target of building 1.5mn new homes by 2029, and ministers will refer to the goal less and less, according to government figures www.ft.com/content/285a...

This is the problem you'd be aiming to solve - not the only barrier to building, but a big one bsky.app/profile/jame...

There's a new town being built near us where as far as I can see things have been done right - new rail link, cyclepaths, commitment to build new school, green space, etc - and the whole thing seems to have slowed to a snail's pace cos most of the homes are at £550k+ and no one's buying.

So angry about this i might go there tomorrow and hold a protest. Possibly one in Waterstones. Where i talk about my new book. YEAH

What is the BBC's justification for maintaining this level of coverage of Reform now it has slipped into third place?

Alex Andreou@sturdyalex.bsky.social

BBC News just interrupted its coverage to go, live, to Nigel Farage - a man with no contitutional standing in our setup - responding to the budget - a document which nobody has seen yet. WHY

There was a long discussion of pedestrianisation on Radio 4 earlier with not a single mention of Norwich. Outrageous oversight by the national broadcaster once again.

The British syndrome, summarised: 78% of us say our high streets are important to us. But only 28% of us actually use their local high street even once a week – and only 53% of people said they used theirs *once a month*. We won't use it, and we won't lose it.

This went on for the rest of the full hour, at which point the BBC apologised for having to go to the weather and urged viewers to follow continuing live coverage on iPlayer. Forty-one minutes of unfiltered, unchallenged propaganda by a far right party with 8 MPs, now third in the polls. Discuss.

Interesting thread

Genuinely I don't know that it comes across to people who haven't been here to watch how almost unbelievable this was, just people taking something that looked impossible and dragging it kicking and screaming all the way to inevitability.

After this last week's triumph it feels increasingly probable McSweeney gets sidelined? If nothing improves by, say, May 2026, the pressure to roll the dice will become too great surely

sorry, but the British government now apparently envisages a scenario that would require me to keep forty eight litres of drinking water in my house for emergencies? oh right I’ll just shove it in the reservoir I’ve got in the back bedroom then

It is a mark of how far politics has fallen that, when a prime minister says he wants to make the argument for something potentially unpopular, there's a chorus of gasps and cheers. He's not done anything! This is not a high bar to clear! And yet.

Weren’t you the guy who wrote that book I listened to about, umm let me think, maps.

just trusted the instructions from Google maps to get to a pub in Lodz and long story short now i see how those people following sat navs end up driving into rivers

this painting reminds me so strongly of a novel I read recently that I genuinely wonder if the author has seen it (yes I am being vague to see if anyone gets it thus demonstrating this is not just me)

Don't listen to Jonn - we did this in Edinburgh & I can't tell you how damaging it was. At the time i assumed the warnings - from Airbnb lobbyists who cared nothing for the city - were a load of hysterical shit but it turned out they were right. No one comes to Edinburgh now - it's a ghost town.

Jonn Elledge@jonnelledge.bsky.social

some of the hysteria here seems to ignore the fact that this is *optional*? if it looks like it will damage local tourism, mayors can just... not do it! they can change their minds!
