Our union won big on this in the contract we just ratified. We currently have staffing ratios e.g. 1 paralegal for every 4 attorneys, 1 investigator for every 5 attorneys, etc. (don't quote me on the specific numbers) but they were implemented in 2012ish and not based on any data or anything

Automation@autoflow.bsky.social

Data-driven staffing is a game changer for public defense. Integrating this RAND study into automated workload management workflows would be a massive win for efficiency. Excited to see this shift.

We were asking for better ratios (more non attorneys) and county was trying to eliminate the ratios entirely. We ended up keeping the current ratios AND agreeing to an internal workload study where both sides can hire an expert and the recommendations inform future ratios

Reminds me of one of my top favorite law review articles which should be required reading for anyone in the family policing system

Replying to @truthout.org

Studies have repeatedly found no evidence that the death penalty acts as a deterrent to crime.

This is really sad but settling was probably the right choice from our AG given the state of federal courts. Also the real solution here is just keep as many children as possible out of foster care, especially out of stranger foster care (although kin folk can be very bigoted too)

Washington state can no longer require foster parents to provide an affirming and supportive home for LGBTQ+ children and youth, according to a settlement the state reached with a religious couple.

Washington's only non-profit appellate public defense law firm has historically been tasked with handling around 40% of public defense appeals. But without a new contract agreement, it could have to close its doors at the end of the year. Story: www.theurbanist.org/unfathomable...

I forgot to share this when it came out on Monday! I wrote about Seattle's new community court that comes along with a new repeat offenses system. Remember, these are misdemeanors only and often involve people who are experiencing behavioral health conditions and/or don't have stable housing.

I tried to do the 9 albums thing but they didn't have Emotion side B as an option so I gave up. I really only need to pick 2 and it's that one and Brand New Eyes by Paramore

It's 9/25 and you know we at SEIU 925 love Dolly's hit song & movie "9 to 5," with it's call for women in the workplace to be treated equally & with respect. Today we honor Dolly Parton and all of her incredible contributions, advocacy & generosity- including The Imagination Library.

I truly, deeply, sincerely do think the guy flipping burgers at McDonalds should be able to afford rent, bills, and groceries with his paycheck alone. That's kind of the whole point of having a job and I can't believe this is considered a radical position.🤷🏽‍♀️

Some of the judges I appear in front of have been issuing bench warrants for people who are ALREADY deported (some self-deports) but are willing to appear on zoom and try and engage in their (stupid misdemeanor) case still

4) the person posts bail and is taken into ICE custody 5) the person fails to appear for their court date. 6) the state asks for a bench warrant and gets it

Susan Sontag's 9/16/01 piece in The New Yorker got her crucified but it's one of the few things from that era that aged well. "'Our country is strong,' we are told again and again. I for one don’t find this entirely consoling. Who doubts that America is strong? But that’s not all America has to be."

9/11 gave us the Department of Homeland Security, which gave us ICE. Things got worse after 9/11 and stayed that way

Jared Yates Sexton@jysexton.bsky.social

There are already articles circulating trying to rewrite history and say America was great after 9/11 and united and thoughtful and just a reminder that that period was marked by intense and insanely racist hatred, paranoia, and a frothing desire for unhinged violence and oppression.

I think we're at the point where we can incredibly comfortably say that your attitude towards Reform, Restore, MAGA, the AfD etc is how you'd have responded to fascism in the 1930s

I was talking about my sister being pregnant to my (all queer) coworkers the other day and was like "she's having a...child who will be assigned male at birth. I'm not trying to be cancelled!" but then I just saw another nonbinary person I know post "we're having a boy!" so idk life is interesting

my wife has a friend who sent Dolly Parton a painting she made & a letter explaining how much Dolly's music meant to her while she was transitioning. Dolly responded to it personally & paid for her top surgery. Sounds like an urban legend but it's real. I think we're going to more stories like this.

I can't stop listening to the new Carly Rae Jepsen song, I'm doing a whole workout with it on repeat. I don't know she keeps doing this

And it has really cute cheesy lyrics in English and Japanese like "you're the ketchup to my French fry, the sugar to my pop" and あなたはかわいい, 私もかわいい, 一緒にいるともっとかわいくなれる ("You're cute, I'm cute too, when we're together we get even cuter")

This is so ridiculous and uninformed. Not one member of the editorial board is a lawyer or law school graduate. It feels like they just wanted a counterpoint to the SU Law Dean's op-ed and couldn't find a lawyer to write it. Not every opinion needs a counterpoint though! Especially a consensus one

*Kathy Griffin voice* I need to talk to a gay linguist. There's a line in one of my favorite Sondheim songs, "The Little Things You Do Together" that I'm curious about. The song is full of double entendres, but basically I'm wondering if "it's the people that you ... bait together" is one of them

I saw a sticker at my light rail station saying "The Urbanist ❤️ private equity" and calling it a "corporate rag in a leftist wrapper." Anybody know anything about this? I never saw much of the Urbanist before joining Bluesky but I like it and their endorsements this year lined up 100% with my vote

First, this is a thread worth reading, and I agree. Second, I want to point out that Dreher’s supposed strength, “AI regulation,” is really Ron Davis’s. If you want a lawyer-technologist who advocates for the humans, Ron has the superior academic, professional, and political qualifications.

Robert Cruickshank@robertcruickshank.com

If Dreher were some amazing candidate running on a platform nobody else was, or running in a purple seat against MAGA, *maybe* it's a different conversation. But he's running against proven progressive champion Ron Davis. We don't need Dreher. He should go away -- and we should vote for Ron. /end
