After school drop-off this morning, I found myself in a small fleet of electric cargo bikes. There were five of us together at one point. Every year, more and more parents are ditching the car for the school run. State e-bike rebate programs are such a no-brainer. Wish we had one in Illinois.

Density for democracy

David Zipper@davidzipper.bsky.social

"Vulnerability to fuel price increases is associated with support for right-wing populist parties." And intriguing implication: More transit and shorter commutes can help strengthen democracy. doi.org/10.1016/j.er...

I conceptually understood but still did not realize exactly how good interlining was until I was at the @humantransit.bsky.social workshop looking around at everybody's maps and seeing how much you could push core service while still getting service "out there" by branching/interlining

Star:Line Chicago@starlinechicago.bsky.social

This is also what makes interlining and thru-running effective strategies for regional rail: demand further out in less-dense areas is proportionally provided, but as lines converge and serve denser parts of the region, routes combine to provide lower headways and higher service frequencies.

Anti-stop consolidation people will tell you it adds like 4 minutes of walking while saving the average rider around 1 minute of riding, but the truth is stop consolidation would help prevent gaps like this. Is 4 minutes of walking worth saving 32 minutes of waiting and 1 min of riding? Yes.

At some point, Chicago urbanists are going to have to reckon with the fact that housing advocacy groups are endorsing anti-bike alders and bike advocacy groups are endorsing anti-housing alders. Right now we take every victory we can get. But what happens when these forces fight each other?

Divverter Dyke reposted

This is by far the biggest strength of regional rail: by and large, we already have the infrastructure, rolling stock, staff, etc. to run higher-frequency service, but historically we only do it for a couple hours in the morning and a couple hours in the evening. We need to sweat our assets.

Michael McLean@michaelmclean.me

Am I the only one thinking this is... a shockingly affordable incremental opex to get great regional rail service in Chicagoland? About the same cost as the police misconduct settlements for one bad officer

God, "mind your own business" is what these people ALWAYS tell me when you ask them not to park in the bike lane. I'm on a bike! You're parked in the bike lane! You've *turned this into* my business! Coincidentally, "mind your own business" not a factor in drivers needlessly harassing me, curious

😂😂So glad I didn't have access to scientists' emails when I procrastinated on my homework

Sarah McAnulty, Ph.D.@sarahmackattack.bsky.social

Kids will email us with frantic demands, like this one i just got which reads "I need to talk to a scientist about squirrels", followed 2 minutes later with"Please respond quick". It is verboten to sign up for a match as a kid, but they give themselves away immediately with their demanding vibe.

12 years ago I took my first bus ride to downtown Chicago and recognized the need for a bus lane on Michigan Ave. we’ve finally made a small step in the right direction. Hopefully our next mayor and city council crew build on this and do so QUICKLY!!!!

David Powe@davidpowe.bsky.social

Absolutely smashing new bus lanes on Michigan Ave! 🚌❤️ Really proud of CDOT's work to deliver this 1.5-mile stretch of dedicated lanes serving 1,700+ buses every day. We're laser-focused on delivering faster, more reliable bus service across Chicago. Excited to keep this momentum rolling into 2027!

Despite my hating on the small scope of this, I’m pretty impressed that they went from announcement to execution in like, a month? Without providing opportunities for insane drivers and Tribune columnists to shriek about it? Now bring that energy to reinforcing and expanding it

“This is our Urban Arrow and we’ve had this since we moved to Chicago. I use it to get my kids around, and sometimes even the two kids and my mom in here. So it's our two wheels, but, like an SUV on two wheels.” 🧵

What Wrigleyville needs is bus lanes. Game days shouldn't fuck over every single bus nearby, then folks could actually arrive in space efficient ways that don't ruin every bus nearby for every rider along the route. Folks at Ashland & 28th shouldn't have their bus gutted by a Cubs game.

Kalen Luciano@kalenfor44.bsky.social

We just won big! After I organized neighbors to oppose the Cub’s plan to expand parking, our Alder rejected it. But it shouldn’t have taken months to stop it. We could’ve spent this time actively improving pedestrian safety. If you want an Alder who prioritizes sustainable cities, join my campaign

Survey time 🤓😈

NITA Chicago@nitachicago.bsky.social

More frequent service. Safer, more accessible stations and stops. 🚇 Tell NITA which improvements would make the biggest difference in your transit experience. Your feedback will help shape regional budget priorities. 🗓️ Take the survey by Oct. 16: https://bit.ly/4AJCzRe

The biggest victory here isnt even the bus lane itself. Its a victory over The Process: - make a committee - meet with The Groups - make a report - start a non-binding referendum - make a pilot - make a report - make a plan - deploy a few years later People are SICK of this.
