The hippo lives in & amongst some very ferocious predators, including Nile crocodiles, lions & hyena packs. But predation rates are exceptionally low: only calves are generally at risk from existing predators. A hippo tooth/tusk can easily penetrate the thick, bony armor of a Nile crocodile.

We can add to that question: why do they need the ability to open their jaws 150°? The answer lies in this skull. See the teeth in the back? Those do the actual work of processing the 70-150 lbs (30-70 kg) of grass needed for a hippo to meet their daily nutritional requirements.
