In the face of the worst moments this industry has seen, we need amazing journalism like we're getting from @verticalslice.news, @aftermath.site, @jasonschreier.bsky.social, @duckvalentine.bsky.social, and many others that are holding the line in the face of dwindling resources.
I very much enjoyed this conversation. Nathan asked extremely insightful questions in a conversation that starts with the good times (five or six years ago) and explores what the heck happened to put the industry where it is today.
for my first inside baseball week feature: new you are error episode about how video game industry investment works and where all the money went after the covid-era boom period, featuring @futterish.fsquared.biz

Those I spoke with are making exit plans. Updating resumes. Ensuring the lifeboat is as well-stocked as possible. But if you're someone who's worked at a studio for years—with a mortgage, bills, and maybe kids—you cannot just up and leave without taking on an extraordinary amount of risk.

More amazing journalism from Chris. @verticalslice.news is off to an unbelievably strong start.
NEW: I spoke with current and former EA employees to understand how the latest layoff round played out and the realities of daily life at the U.S. publisher. The short version? EA is controlled by an executive class that "cannot fail, only be failed." Workers, then, will always pay the price.
Hey @amandafarough.ca, Mat dropped new sick beats. I think this tune feels veeeeeeeery right.
Some folks have really tied themselves into knots with this belief bordering on zealotry that the release of the New Big Game is going to have millions and millions of new people buying current gen consoles next month that they'll twist every single piece of info into that story no matter what.

Between Tim Sweeney being an absolute AI chud and the harassment of our beloved @kenney.nl, we've decided to cancel our previously announced Epic Games Store release for Shape Sender Deluxe 🚮
And Nadella? Amy Hood? Are they going to keep on with the horrible, AI-psychosis strategy?

I loved chatting with Jacob at Game-a-Palooza earlier this month. This preview provides additional insight into our design philosophy and gives you a new peek behind the curtain about our use of full motion video!
I previewed The Final Cut of Lilith Cunningham from @causewaystudios.com at Game-A-Palooza in Brooklyn. I've been super interested in this game and was not disappointed! www.superjumpmagazine.com/previewing-t...

FFVIII was one of the first that made me see how awesome stories could be in games & started my love for RPGs. I remember playing the demo on one of the PS1 demo disks back in the day and wanted it so bad. It was my first FF & the first game I ever beat by myself. The opening will forever be ICONIC!
And if you aren't a developer, tell us what made you excited about games as an art form! Since I'm on the publishing/marketing side (with a sprinkle of design), I think what sealed it for me was the big Walmart Canada leak in 2018. PANIC flooded through the game industry... except at Bethesda.

Coming in to answer the question from @futterish.fsquared.biz about what made a non-dev excited about games. Interactive art I've always been huge on interactive art and I was starting to really age into cognitive awareness when the PS1 released with an explosion of emphasis on meaningful stories.

This week has been beyond difficult for the games industry, so we want to use this weeks #QuestionsWithCauseway to reflect on how impactful games are. So, which game or franchise made you want to be a developer?
The Causeway Studios team will be at AdventureX in London showing off The Final Cut of Lilith Cunningham! If you're a member of the press who will be at AdventureX, please reach out! Let's chat! (This demo is only available in-person... a public demo will happen next year.) youtu.be/6bKf0OpwMf4
If you're managing a fund or want to chat about co-publishing, we're thrilled to share some of the super secret things we're building into the game. I'll be there w our dynamic writing duo of @gregwrogers.bsky.social (Creative Dir) and @amandafarough.ca (Dir of Production/Narrative Designer)!
I know that the development that exists behind trailers is often invisible outside the studio. And even with that in mind and not knowing what the dev story is on this project… this one hurts.
Can confirm that this is a real trailer of the Mass Effect game that BioWare was developing up until its closure yesterday www.reddit.com/r/masseffect...

They should have outsourced it to us. It would have cost $500k and there would be a poop button.
Even if the cost is HALF this, exclusivity on console games simply does not make sense right now. It sure as hell won't make sense with adoption shot in the kneecaps by hardware that costs $1200 - $1800. There simply aren't enough customers that have interest in each game to cover the spread.

Andrew Wilson specifically called out how successful Battlefield 6 has been. Labor has rarely been able to directly share in the success of video games, and almost never at the largest scale. Now? The people who make these wildly successful games can't even keep their jobs.
While EA shuts down BioWare, developers of The Sims, Skate, and Battlefield say they've also lost their jobs https://bit.ly/4z5IIpJ
