Sitting jn a hospital waiting room for hours (everything is fine) and being subjected to unending political ads. If I had to deal with these ads in my media diet, I would gouge out my eyes.

Thought about writing "go full Oedipus" but realized that would easily be misconstrued. I just mean the part about his eyes. Not the rest of it

The thing about Lula winning is that the odds heading into today were similar to what stats modelers and gamblers are saying about the gop holding the Senate.

I would really love to see some kind of smart analysis of whatever the hell is going on with the dissonance between the messages Bessent and Warsh are sending in their respective public comments and policy moves.

Everything I've read or heard simply notes that it is the case that they are working at cross purposes and leaves it at that. I think this is probably the most interesting thing going on in the national US government right now and I have basically no narrative to slap on it.

Saw a car with a Perot '92 bumper sticker on it today. I know nothing about cars but I'd guess the model year was 2005-2010.

Matty Y is in a very tough spot. He's realized that he is just a rightwinger but he knows that if comes out as one he will lose most of his subscribers. His material interest necessitates twisting himself into a pretzel like this.

It's very funny that he pretends these aren't his personal views

We have some google admin tools at work that do a bunch of g-suite usage tracking shit. One of the things it does is send some basic stats to admins in a weekly summary email. Thanks to this mostly useless feature, I know that I regularly get 450-500 emails/week.

Mr. Mayor, fire this man

Staten Island traffic cameras have caught a white RAM 1500 pickup truck blasting through school zones or running red lights more than 547 times since 2022. The truck belongs to James Giovansanti, who lives and works there as an NYPD officer. nyc.streetsblog.org/2026/04/23/t...

The fact that Mamdani just seems like a cheerful normal guy who's policies are things like "we're going to tax second homes to fund pothole repairs" or whatever and yet this generates panicked responses like "This is basically Stalin's great purge turned up to eleven" is... telling. It tells things.

A worker died at an Amazon warehouse in Oregon last week. For more than an hour, workers were instructed to continue working as the man lay dead. One worker wanted to help, but a manager told them to “Just turn around and not look. Let’s get back to work," according to @thewesternedge.bsky.social.

Tell me you've never lived outside a handful of coastal cities without telling me you've never lived outside a handful of coastal cities. Almost everywhere in this country you have to walk in the road because there is no sidewalk. Even in big progressive cities like Austin, there is no sidewalk.

I, for one, sincerely hope that the stop work order on the ballroom means that there will just be a hole in the ground for the next 2.5 years while this gets litigated. I don't actually care at all about the ballroom per se but I do enjoy bad people getting shit on their face. Or lawn. Whatever.

What's with the little white hats on the water glasses at Trump's press conference? Is this a normal thing that I've just not noticed before?

Here we have a scene of several busses operating normally, as seen from my office, which I reached via the also functioning normally R train.

I am begging the media to stop sating nyc has banned all travel. Almost all public transit is running. It's just the small minority of weirdos who drive that have to stay home.

There's a shocking amount of whining/Mamdani bashing in NYC Facebook regarding unmelted snow. Everywhere I've been in the city since the storm has been fine, or at least in line with expectations. Is this entirely an effort to manufacture outrage? Very unclear to me what people are mad about.

Most people don't want to hear it but Dungeness crab is really the only crab worth getting excited about. (I am in Washington).

deposing a foreign ruler and spending tens of billions of dollars on oil subsidies so we can put American frackers out of business, just in time for EVs to permanently collapse oil demand. that's the Trump business touch alright

On the plus side, by covering their foreign policy adventurism with the veneer of a "law and order" approach, the administration opens themselves to the very real chance they'll fail to get convictions in court. Thus far their lawfare revenge tour hasn't resulted in much success.

One of these cult leaders had predicted that the "singularity" was gonna be in 2025. I think we all made it right? Barring anything happening in the next few days. They'll update their so-called "calculations" (I.e. numbers out of asses) for the next "prediction." Who STILL platforms these people?

Happy holidays! @jeffjarvis.bsky.social and I spoke with Ben Goertzel of SingularityNET on AI Inside about open source AI, regulation, and AGI’s messy middle. He argues “open” often stops at code. Two moments stood out. Full episode: aiinside.show/episode/ben-...

and where NYC does meter parking, they give it away for free on Sunday. Free parking on Sunday is such an asinine thing for NYC to do, yet nobody ever questions it.

Why did 2 new Japanese grocery stores open in Cobble Hill this month within 1/4 mile of an already existing Japanese grocery store? Don't get me wrong, this is great, but I worry that none of them will survive this much competition.
