Okay but what if I tried writing music for TraumaMon that wasn’t gameboyesque? Is it too weird to have, like, strings and piano to accompany pixel art?

Still working on the basics - Pod now "snaps" to ladders when you climb - Ladders belong to their own class - Added a wallslide state - Pod can jump out of a wallslide - Unfortunately, Pod's jump doesn't send them *away* from the wall and I can figure out why #gamedev #indiedev #godot

I guess next I’ll see if I can build a little starter town to wander around in. I need to start working on scene transitions but I’m afraid it’ll break something lmao.

I just got this and I'm kicking my feet all excited to try them later.

You can now get Destiny Spire and Chaos Warrior bundled together on Steam for a great deal! Check it out if you wanna get into some retro rpg action! Link to the bundle below 👇 #indiegames #rpg #jrpg #gaming #retrogaming

Now that I have the little NPC guy moving around, I need to figure out how to get him to turn towards the main character when they interact so we can have a little message pop up. It shouldn’t be TOO difficult, I would think.

I didn't have much energy today so I spent time just using the movement system I made, but for NPCs. Just a little guy hoofing it around town. I wanted to do the message system but I was too lazy to visit a tutorial on that today.

this has turned out to be quite a colorful roster of characters so far... (wip) ( #pixelart #aseprite #gamedev #rpgmaker )

I think I want to try and do the text system next. But that opens me up to a bunch of other questions. So I want to try and make it a typewriter effect? Do I want a little blip noise? Are we just doing ye olde Pokémon again? I think I might want text effects. So many options, truly.

I had a minor think about it, and I’m gonna just go with the tile based movement of Pokemon. So I need to figure out how to get the game to check if a tile is blocked or not, how to get it to go to the next tile without changing directions midway, and making the player turn directions when tapped.

That shouldn’t be too difficult, if I break it down. I might even be a little zesty and add a little sound effect for when you bump into a collision.

Now that I have basic movement, it’s time to think about where I want that to go. Do I go for ye olde Pokemon movement? Do I go for something else? If so, what? So many questions in my little noggin.

I officially have a little guy moving around the screen and I got a cheap little asset pack to use as a placeholder. I’ll post a video at some point. It’s nothing special but it’s nice to make progress!

You know, maybe it was a mistake to try and take on the battle system first, given that I am just starting to dip my toes in Godot. I’ll nab an asset pack on Itch and try to just get some simple movement systems and such going. I’m positive I can handle that.

Hmmmm. Yes, I still suck at code. This is what I’m learning while trying to make this game work lol. But! One day I won’t be so bad and I can reply to this post and be like “ah yes thank goodness we’re over this hill now”

I’m really trying to embrace the whole “make it first, then make it good” mentality with this game. Like, if I can get this thing chugging to life with clunky code and dogshit visuals I’ll be happy because then I know it’s only up from there.

I’m thinking of 9 types for the game. Anger Fear Joy Desire Comfort Loss Love Self Memory I want to keep it understandable, but it’s hard to tell what’s effective against what just by looking. I was thinking something like Anger > Fear, Fear > Joy, and Joy > Anger, and so on with each triangle.

It’s kinda difficult to go with abstract concepts and emotions for typing, but perhaps if I put enough reminders in the game the player will pick it up more easily.

Bunch of little things tonight - Kicks now go the right direction - Pod "hangs" in the air after stomping - Stomps and kicks attached to markers, not using magic numbers - Pod's deceleration faster on ground than in air - Kicks don't dead stop Pod, but start deceleration #gamedev #indiedev #godot

I’ve been thinking about the starter town in the dream world for TraumaMon. I want there to be a big hole that never goes away in the game, but the world expands around it. I want to communicate the idea that loss is something you learn to carry in life, and the burden becomes easier as you grow.

I’m stuck on Godot just making the fonts readable at a low resolution for TraumaMon lol. I get stuck on the silliest things for gamedev.

Hats are an optional cosmetic collectible in my game. But how do you get them? You go into this one cave and exchange tokens for them, of course. A HATOKEN, specifically. Each token is linked to a specific hat, but you won't know which one until you exchange it. #MayGame #indiegame #cozygame

So I while I’m working out how to get this off the ground in Godot (which is easier than I expected), I guess I should talk about TraumaMon a little bit. Basically, it’s a game about a teenage boy who loses his mother to illness and has to move in with his grandparents, go to a new school, etc.

I want it so the social links open up new areas and creatures based on how they’re handled in game. The waking world influences the dream world directly. Weather, encounters, accessibility, etc. So it’s like playing two games at once and managing them so they come together.

I have lots of ideas on how to handle this, but it’s a lot. So I’m gonna try to make a demo with a week’s worth of content and see how it’s received, then see if funding and better resources are an option. Everything will be placeholder while I work on it, in hopes that more talented folks can help.

And the game is about how be navigates those social situations during the day, Persona series style. Complete with social links, activities to do, etc. Then, when he goes to sleep, he dreams about a Pokemon world where creatures are based on feelings. He travels the dream world to find his mom.

I wish I had the ability to make creatures. I tried making a starter and it looks… not good. I can always use it as a placeholder and try again when I get better, but I doubt I’d be as good as a lot of the stuff I’ve seen floating around.

You know what, life is too short. I’m gonna try making a dream game in Godot that’s code named TraumaMon (yes I am doing this to be funny and YES it’s a pokemon game about loss and grief)

Been a while since I worked on this. Got a functioning double jump. Using a state machine to control it instead of nested control flow statements is *way* simpler. One line, no new variables. #gamedev #indiedev #godot

New here? I've spent the past two years making The Book of Rynn, a brand-new RPG for the original NES, inspired by Dragon Warrior I-IV! The first adventure is complete and playable, with three more planned! Free demo at sebotron.itch.io/the-book-of-... #retrogames #nes #gamedev #jrpg #indiegames

sebotron.itch.ioThe Book of Rynn — NES JRPG Homebrew — in development by sebotronAn 8-bit RPG for the NES inspired by the classics!

I’ve had people make pithy comments to me before about how all the games I make are about grief and to them I say… Fuck off. I’ll make whatever the fuck I want. :)

experimenting with overworld tiles. I'll almost certainly need to make my own bespoke tile editor for this. #pixelart #gamedev

I did all the art and systems for this sequence while unemployed, before I got my current job, and this burned me out so bad holy cow. I still think it's a great foundation for a game but I have no idea how I'd juggle this with a dayjob. #gamedev #pixelart

I wonder if now is the time to go through the games I’ve made and find some common issues and pitfalls I’ve encountered among them so that I can level up my game development skills. I’ve been feeling like my work doesn’t reach its full potential and I’d like to figure out why.

Well someone made Unown Message achievements so now that game is getting a lot of attention and some people got triggered by the self-harm scene in the game. I updated the page to make it more obvious that there is upsetting content but I feel bad. I should have put a warning in the game itself.

Lowkey hate it when people don’t have a sense of whimsy. Where can a bitch fancifully frolick? Quaint quirks and voluminous vagary wanted. Some caprice on the side, if you’re nasty.
