TY, Garry ..."Aspiring authoritarians never ask for permission; they see what they can get away with. The only way to ensure the integrity of the 2026 midterms is to demonstrate, now, that the ideals of the American Constitution are still worth fighting for."

Talking about 2028 is dangerously naive; the danger is now. Trump is directing the military and justice department to go to "war" on US cities and his enemies, from TV hosts to former FBI directors. Keeping the 2026 midterms fair may be the last stand. My latest: www.theatlantic.com/politics/arc...

One of the most prescient statements you made, that has stuck with me as I've watched the collapse of critical thinking in America, was this: "The point of modern propaganda isn't only to misinform or push an agenda. It is to exhaust your critical thinking, to annihilate truth."

Or Russia. Not a coincidence that dissidents from authoritarian nations and reporters that covered those places have been waving their arms over what the Trump White House has been doing since 2017 while most US opposition and media have been sedately concerned. It’s not confusing to us at all.

Brian Klaas@brianklaas.bsky.social

So much has gone wrong in US press reporting on Trump because the White House reporters are people who have exclusively covered US politics. They need people who have worked in Hungary, Turkey, etc. The relevant knowledge isn't Reagan factoids; it's the dynamics of competitive authoritarianism.

Today, Ukraine commemorates the Babyn Yar massacre - one of WWII’s darkest chapters. In Sept 1941, Nazis executed tens of thousands, mainly Kyiv’s Jews, along with Roma, POWs, and civilians. Babyn Yar stands as a symbol of Holocaust horrors. We remember to prevent history from repeating.

theatlantic.comThe Race to Save America’s DemocracyTrump’s administration may seem chaotic, but Americans should not take the integrity of next year’s elections for granted.

Those actively working for Trump's takeover are the clear and present danger, but complacency is also a threat. "He hasn't done x yet, so he won't" is a fallacy. Don't confuse an autocrat's attempts with his successes. "What would he do if not stopped?" is the right question.

Congress and judges will not save you. The GOP has rolled over every time, despite the unpopularity of Trump and most of his key policies. The Supreme Court has already demonstrated enough loyalty to Trump to give him unprecedented powers. This process accelerates unless stopped.

By the way, if you don't protest Trump weaponizing the Justice Department against his critics because they are people you don't like or agree with, you are assisting this fascist takeover. Wait until it happens to someone you like and it's too late.

Ukraine is a secondary topic for both Trump and Putin in Alaska. This is a mafia meeting arranged by war criminal Putin to restore Russia internationally & economically. Trump wants his "peace" glory and Putin used that to get this summit. But it's mainly about money for both of them, as always.

ft.comEurope now needs to step off the sidelines on UkraineIf EU leaders genuinely believe Kyiv’s independence matters, they must deploy combat troops to guarantee any ceasefire

With Russia on the march in Europe, Trump Putinizing the US, and KGB man Putin (and foreign minister Lavrov in a USSR shirt) in Alaska, no better time to talk to a man whose office is next to the Berlin Wall's infamous death strip. Please listen (or read) and share.

The space between crusading global policeman and “America First” isolationism is where the founder of Geopolitical Futures plants a flag. Is realism really realistic? Americans can look at Russia to see what happens when a leader puts personal power over national interests and calls it pragmatism.

Simply using the absurd phrase “the Ukraine conflict” says a lot. Calling out the opportunism and hypocrisy of other nations doing business with Russia is fine (China, ahem), but admit you are funding a dictator‘s unprovoked war by choice.

Lost elections are rigged, won elections are fair. Good job numbers are real, bad ones are fake. Sex trafficking is bad, unless the traffickers will blame your enemies. Crime is bad, unless the criminals are pro-Trump. This isn’t 4D chess, or even tic-tac-toe, just Autocrat 101.

I lived through the bizarre whipsaw of Republican Russia hawks like McCain pushing back on Obama’s ideological distaste for US power to Dems supporting aid to Ukraine out of opposition to Trump’s support from Putin and ‘America First’ nationalism. My constituency flipped while I stayed the same!

As a Russian living in the US, the story of Derek Huffman—an American who moved his family to Russia—got my attention. This anti-woke crusader followed in the footsteps of American Communists who once flocked to Stalin's USSR. Now as then, a bad choice! www.thenextmove.org/p/anti-woke-...

Masih was targeted for assassination by Iranian agents in New York City for her prominent women’s rights campaigns against the Islamic State. Today, if masked men jumped out of an unmarked van and grabbed her, would you call the police or is that the secret police? We must all be dissidents now.

I'll allow the dubious chess metaphor in this case! But no matter how bad whatever is in the Epstein files is for Trump--and clearly it's bad--I'm sure whatever Putin has on him is worse.

MeidasTouch@meidastouch.com

It's beginning to look grim for Trump's chances of escaping the Epstein scandal unscathed. We joined the I've Had It Podcast to discuss!

When asked why Trump is so bizarrely loyal to Putin, I say we'll probably never know. He has an affinity for dictators as an aspiring one himself. Putin helped him get elected so can't be bad. Etc. But considering his lifestyle and the KGB's practices, it would be shocking if he *wasn't* cultivated.

If the Trump admin continues to follow the Russian authoritarian scripts he loves, Maxwell will exonerate Trump, incriminate Dems, get a pardon, and fall out a window. Not necessarily in that order.

Top Justice Department officials have contacted lawyers representing Ghislaine Maxwell, a longtime associate of Jeffrey Epstein who is serving a prison term for sex trafficking, to address questions about the case that have fueled a furious right-wing backlash.

Online jokes, or "jokes", about abhorrent acts are ironic and clever until it happens. Normalizing fascism, racism, antisemitism, violence, and other publicly unacceptable beliefs with jokes is an old method, intentional or not. And from the President, it’s no joke at all.

One can certainly debate the degree to which the Trump campaign knew about or encouraged Russian operations to influence the 2016 election, or the relevance they had to the outcome. But the evidence that such operations were real is overwhelming and widely attested by non-US intel agencies.
