I remind y'all that Freedom to Read South Carolina is actually calling for a boycott of Blink for this nonsense, and they're not wrong. More freedom to read advocates should be asking for this, too.

This is a useful articulation of the import of this ruling. It is particularly noteworthy that our Faculty Association had to take the lead to achieve this court victory, while UCLA’s cowardly leadership refused to step up for our institution.

Andrew Sabl@andysabl.bsky.social

Explainer on the signifiance of UCLA’s unions' and faculty associations’ win in court. (Tl;dr: the Trump Administration must now respect actual laws—rather than withholding funding arbitrarily so as to extort policy changes—with immediate remedies if it doesn't.) www.legalish.me/trump-drops-...

Canadian Authors and Illustrators Against Book Bans strongly condemns the ongoing book bans in Alberta, and the secrecy surrounding the lists of banned titles. When public schools are banning books in school libraries, Canadians have a right to know what books are being targeted.

We urge Alberta’s school boards to make public all lists of banned titles. #CAIABB #abbookban #albertabookban #abpoli #abgov #ableg #abed #bookbans #cankidlit #nobansincanada

Can one even resign from a position one never legally held?

FOX: Interim U.S. Attorney for the state of New Jersey, Alina Habba has resigned. Attorney General Pam Bondi says she accepted the resignation after a court's decision disqualifying Habba from serving.

How about somebody write NINETEEN REASONS WHY Utah leaders are pearl-clutching moral cowards who hate students

kelly jensen@heykellyjensen.bsky.social

Surprise–Utah just quietly banned its 19th book from *every single public school* in the state. THIRTEEN REASONS WHY was banned yesterday. It must be removed from every public school statewide. bookriot.com/utah-bans-th...

Ignore all laws about altering historic properties ✅ Pave over Rose Garden for tacky Mar-A-Lardo Patio ✅ Demolish East Wing after lying that "It won't interfere with the current building. It'll be near it but not touching it" ✅ Build gaudy $250M Ballroom as public struggles financially ✅ #Ugh🤢✅

This is a deeply disturbing case that raises profoundly troubling questions about Harvard’s tenure review process. That a scholar of this caliber would be denied tenure seems unthinkable.

The first time Charlie Chaplin used his voice in a film, he wielded it to forcefully condemn the rising forces of fascism around the globe. Will we listen to his words today?

Brown University’s craven capitulation and willingness to toss its trans students, faculty, and staff under the bus is disgusting and humiliating for this alumnus. Didn’t think its president was stupid enough to try to pay off a blackmailer. That never ends well…

So, submitting a panel proposal to the @asianstudies.org website only to be confronted with a participant ethnicity drop-down menu that looks like this. My panel, with no less than three SOUTHEAST Asians once again falls between the cracks. Do better AAS! (Also, are any of these even "ethnicities"?)

A fucking "show of presence" ?? What utter and intense bullshit. Well, that accomplished nothing except to piss off an already enraged city. ICE hasn't seen anything yet - we're gonna run those bastards out of town.

Aaron Reichlin-Melnick@reichlinmelnick.bsky.social

Military documents confirm that the LA operation today was a “show of presence” intended to send a message to LA residents about the power of the federal government. After staging with armed soldiers and Border Patrol agents on horse, they packed up and left after a short walk.

Proud of these fans - NOT of Galaxy and the team's deafening silence. This isn't a time for silence, especially when the US government is targeting families, co-workers, and neighbors.

Friends who are members of the American Historical Association (or wish to join), please vote by July 15 for the slate that is committed to democratizing our profession and holding itself accountable to the membership during these perilous times.

Just contributed to this. Never going to stop supporting trans books and LGBTQ books, especially for kids, and librarians who recognize the importance of books that represent all experiences and identities. Book banners should and will never win!

As the House votes, I'm doing an internet search on "Canadian Permanent Resident." I'm wondering what the criteria are for 'political refugee' . . . Not sure I can take much more of this.

Saw this on the LA Times; as if we didn't have enough evidence of ICE officers' sheer contempt for human beings, they now reinforce the reality that they disdain children, schools, and public institutions more broadly.

LorennaCleary.bsky.social@lorennacleary.bsky.social

So ICE and CBP officers whipped out their dicks at a playground at a school. They then urinated on the school property. The school is also next to two other schools. Multiple officers were caught on security cameras urinating in public on the school property. Do y’all feel safer yet?

JFC - more of Trump's "a lot of people" bullshit. A lot of people think Trump walks on water - which just means there are a lot of certifiable morons in this country. Logic dies the moment words leave Trump's mouth.

Just asked to pick a license option for my 800 word book review for the American Historical Review. My options were "Standard" which costs $0.00, or "Open Access" which costs $4,620. How is that even a choice? Also, how would my tiny review remotely be worth $4,620 . . .?

STOP asking AI systems for "opinions" and presenting their outputs as reasoned responses. AI systems don't think or reason. They don't have "opinions." All they're doing is rewriting/recreating answers cobbled together from whatever materials were fed to it.

Wow this is bad. Read just the first few pages of the judges' "reasoning," which seems to suggest a complete misreading of the circumstances and implications of what is going on here. Good grief.

Thank you! I saw this in the NYT this morning as well and nearly choked on my coffee. This is such an old trope that emerges from all sorts of historical justifications for MNC exploitation of female workers, particularly in Asia. Can't wait to hear their explanation . . .
