It’s a decision to spend fewer dollars on SNAP while funding random elective wars and ICE and ads for Trump

PBS News@pbsnews.org

More than 5 million people have lost their Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, or SNAP, benefits since President Donald Trump’s One Big Beautiful Bill passed last year. That has meant many more people are turning to food banks for support. https://to.pbs.org/47Sb4rd

And, most importantly, thanks to the vital mobilisation of young people. Students took to the streets the day after the first round elections, kickstarting massive movements that saw the largest public demonstrations in Brazil since the days of Diretas Já at the end of the military dictatorship.

It's really important to pay attention to the fact that Lula beat the fascist candidate not by compromising and trying to meet fascist voters in the middle, but by sticking to his guns, promising prosecutions for election interference, and mobilising his own voters to turn out in greater numbers.

Going through old notes today, I was reminded that the NY Times' Peter Baker wrote in January that Trump had "changed the definition of normal." It helps us understand NYT's shortcomings when we realize it accepts the idea that Trump gets to decide what's normal.

It seems impossible for our political system to hold the politicians tied to the actual invasion of our Capitol to account, but any random Muslim candidate is reflexively labeled a terrorist.

JUST POSTED: Today at The NYT we are publishing a major investigation into how President Trump used his executive powers to expose millions of Americans to greater cancer risks. A six month-long investigation built on more than 10,000 pages of FOIA records. Read it www.nytimes.com/2026/10/24/c...

In his defense of Ramaswamy’s vile ad, Trump called Amy Acton a “defective” candidate. As a former rape crisis counselor who has worked with countless survivors of childhood sexual assault, I want to speak a bit about how profoundly damaging that is. 🧵

NEW AD: Have you seen these anti-Talarico attack ads? Elon Musk paid for nearly all of them. The world's first trillionaire knows if he drags the most corrupt politician in Texas across the finish line, Ken Paxton will owe him everything. Elon Musk: Texas is not for sale.

Other than Rahm himself, who wants Rahm Emanuel to run for president? He’s not a particularly talented candidate. He’s got lots of baggage. He’ll get eaten alive by someone like Ossoff or Buttigieg or AOC on a debate stage. What even is his base?

Palestinian farmers do not — and should not — need permits to harvest their own olive fields. But they fear doing so, because the IDF doesn’t protect them from settler violence.

Not to be the party skunk, but I do wonder about dynamic nonresponse If that’s happening among Trump fans who will vote, these polls are missing some gop supporters (Of course they could also be over representing gop support…but it’s the above dynamic that I wonder most about)

Simon Rosenberg@simonwdc.bsky.social

A thread about the polling we've seen in recent days. There is a lot of data suggesting that voters are breaking towards Dems and away from the Rs in the closing days of the election. The wave is getting bigger. Here's a summary of new generic ballots: 1/

For harvesting olives. They should all be released immediately. To be clear: Palestinians face far worse consequences every day. These detentions by the IDF are one more attempt to undermine Palestinians’ right to harvest their olive groves, travel on their roads, and live in their homes.

I’ve been released from IDF custody with a “warning,” apparently because of my public profile (I told them I wasn’t even a congressmember yet, just a nominee). But several dozen rabbis & participants harvesting olives with me are still in detention.
