Hoping @anneapplebaum.wsocial.eu is predictive but U.S. infiltration by rot from heritage foundation, federalist society, Rupert Murdoch, Apartheid Clyde, etc may overwhelm the majority’s wishes for mere decency.
In one day, two politicians - Bolsonaro in Brazil and Vucic in Serbia - with ties to Trump have lost surprise elections thanks to high turnout. The rise of the international far-right is not inevitable.

The toxicity that @ericlipton.nytimes.com and his colleagues have uncovered is everywhere but if you live in Texas, Louisiana, or Alabama pay special attention
JUST POSTED: Today at The NYT we are publishing a major investigation into how President Trump used his executive powers to expose millions of Americans to greater cancer risks. A six month-long investigation built on more than 10,000 pages of FOIA records. Read it www.nytimes.com/2026/10/24/c...

A carefully planned Russian propaganda operation is underway. Having starved people in Oleshky for months, Russia, with the 'intervention' of Melania, will allow people to leave and pretend Ukraine was at fault. Read @zarinazabrisky.bsky.social www.kyivpost.com/analysis/88041

A wild story: the CEO of a US energy company whose plans were discussed during the Witkoff-Kushner-Putin negotiations resigns. Why? He learned that his company's main investor is a sanctioned Russian company, not the UAE www.nytimes.com/2026/10/23/u...

In Venezuela last September, I found people hoping for change, but shocked and surprised by US policy, especially opaque oil deals with former regime cronies. The system looks, one economist told me, like “a coalition of two kleptocracies" www.theatlantic.com/magazine/202...

News media fail, @nytimes.com style.
The venerable New York Times not only determines what’s news but sets the standard for how it should be reported. It has been describing the midterms as if it were a competition between two equally passionate and roughly equivalent sides. This is a mistake.

This has been Putin's dream for years: That his country, with GDP per capita lower than Poland, unable to conquer Donbas since 2014, will be treated as an equal to the US and China. www.wsj.com/world/russia...
The announcement of a religious position IS religist extremism.
There is much to admire in Abdul El-Sayed's response to the GOP plant in his audience. But one of the most deft things he did was to point out (twice) that our Constitution protects our right to follow *no* religion, thereby casting Christian nationalist Tommy as the actual religious extremist.
Jeffrey Toobin explains what is obvious and a 'done deal.' Laws must be promulgated to address the astonishing corruption of the Supreme Court—part of a long list.

In 1987 Trump visited Moscow. Since then, "He has changed his mind about abortion and crypto, he has supported different political parties, but his dislike of America’s democratic allies and his preference for Russia have remained remarkably consistent." www.theatlantic.com/ideas/2026/1...

There is, writes @davidfrum.bsky.social, an "implicit quid pro quo in these lucrative deals offered to Trump’s family and friends: If you compel Ukraine to surrender, we will enrich you beyond reckoning" www.theatlantic.com/ideas/2026/1...
@anneapplebaum.wsocial.eu is concise and sickeningly accurate. One point I'd take disagree with: she says the Felon "undermined 18 months of his own diplomacy." Since he never meant anything he'd said to support Ukraine, nothing was lost. Domestically he's always bought politicians from both sides
"The amount of fuel Russia could export is too small, the impact on pricing too slight, the narrative too late to shape electoral outcomes: This looks, instead, like something very different: an abrupt, Hail Mary attempt to force Ukraine to surrender" www.theatlantic.com/idea/2026/10...
