Just a reminder that there is no good data to support these uses in K12, we are just testing it live all on kids who won’t ever be these ages again and can’t get them back if we fuck it up.

"AI can draft an essay for you, especially if you give it a high quality prompt." Really? This is what MIT thinks high schoolers should learn? MIT's "Day of AI" dayofai.org provides materials for K-12 teachers and claims to have reached over 5,000,000 students to date. 1/2

Anyone know if the Darker Shade of Magic movie that was in the works is still happening? I'm rereading the books and just reminded again how great they would be as movies.

The Amy Acton thing is making me remember when I was a teenager and knew a family with a 13yo who went to court against her step-father for abuse while her mother told everyone she was lying because she was mad her mom got remarried. The girl dropped the charges partway through the trial.

Her mom then used that to prove to everyone that the girl had been lying all along. I have two thoughts when I think of this: first, I am so so so fucking sorry to that daughter who had to deal with that, and second, he had another daughter and I hope they got away from him before he hurt her, too.

I know this is a situation that a lot of people have experienced and it's AWFUL, but I just keep thinking of her. She's an adult now. I hope she got away from him and got help and is doing well now. I hope her mother realizes what she did and regrets it.

I saw a different post about how in rural areas kids often play on coed teams and it doesn't matter and I live in a city and my kid sometimes plays on co-ed teams as she gets older because they don't always have enough people for teams. She's also had a trans kid on the team before. It was fine!

I live in a rural town and, like, I don't know how to tell you this, but the girls play on the boys team and vice versa all the time because otherwise we don't have enough players for a game and it's literally always fine so stop being weirdos about kids sports and just let trans kids play.

In multiple instances, the Mississippi Free Press found that information listed in the statewide elections database was incorrect, including erroneous polling place addresses. That can cause voters who use the state's polling place locator tool to go to the wrong location on Election Day.

I saw something earlier where a journalist was suggesting preventing people from using AI/refusing to buy AI things is wrong because AI lets people who can't afford to hire people the chance to make creative works. I have thoughts about this.

I sympathize with creators who can't afford to pay for expensive things like artwork. I think there should be ways to help people afford services. But I do NOT thing using unethical AI that was trained on stolen data and continues to put other artists out of work is the way to go.

If you can't understand why people would decide to not engage with your creative works because you used AI, maybe you should do more reflection and understand that, to many of us, it's no different from saying, "I took this work without paying for it and why are you so mad about it?"

Generative AI was trained without consent or recompense on work of real people and using it is, in my mind, not different from stealing an artist's work without paying. It is also causing real people to lose work and not be able to survive on their art, so it's exacerbating a problem.

I'm okay with AI in specific circumstances where it is trained appropriately: helping identify cancer in mammograms, modeling weather, reading historic scrolls without damaging them. I am not okay with generative AI use and don't think I ever will be. The harms are too great.

My perspective: saying "I want to use AI because it's too expensive otherwise" as if that alone is the deciding factor, is equivalent to saying, "I want to steal someone's work to use because it's too expensive to pay for," or "I want to use slave labor because I can't afford to pay for it."

We'd all accept that it's inherently wrong for someone to want to steal work or get work done without pay just because they couldn't afford it. We'd all accept that being unable to pay is not automatically a legitimate reason to do something that is inherently wrong. Gen AI is inherently wrong.

We need a law that prevents billionaire heads of social media companies from using their businesses to push their political agendas, including algorithm adjustments to push certain political viewpoints. Like I'm fine if they go on TV and say "I support..." but no using your algorithm.

This obviously would also include throttling people you disagree with, changing your AI to match what you want it to say, and suspending accounts for democrats because they're "violating anti-politics policies" while allowing republicans to do the same.

(🚨) BREAKING NEWS: Trump Assures War-Weary Voters That a Vote for Republicans on November 3 Is a Vote For... ...*More War*. Specifically, a New Forever War in Cuba. JFC—he’s insane. He lied about ending wars, saving the economy, *everything*. He and his party must be stopped.

I will say that the level of desperation I'm seeing from republicans regarding senate seats does give me some confidence that they don't have it entirely rigged.

I think a lot of people don't understand this, and frankly the concept of, "Just wait eventually you'll get rights" should be a non-starter even if this wasn't true.

This post is unavailable.

My expectations are low going into senate races, if I'm honest, because I think there is hinkiness afoot. I think the house probably goes democrat because that would be really hard to rig believably, but the senate is such a long shot they could get by with it. BUT I sincerely want to be wrong.

I'm just setting my expectations where I think they should be because I've seen races that were clear "definitely dems should win this" go the other way for senate too many times. But I'd LOOOVE to see some of these red states finally go dem. Texas especially.

I'll be honest, if the only thing anyone has on Graham is that he was gay, I'm shocked. I have long suspected Trump had blackmail on him, and that it must be about more than being gay, and that Trump wants his sister because he can control her with the same blackmail.

If this whole time it was just "he's gay and doesn't want anyone to know" I am surprised. Especially if that would keep his sister in line. There is a reason Trump wants his sister, and this is the only one I can think of.

I'm watching a show that has supposedly true haunted house stories and I'm on the third weird relationship thing that's making me think the whole thing is fake stories written by the same guy who has problems with women.

I don't really expect Trump to live long enough to see actual consequences (which I find incredibly frustrating) but I REALLY need to see consequences for what he's done, and I need to see consequences for Musk.
