When Grammy-winning musician Rhiannon Giddens begins playing “Old Corn Liquor,” a traditional Black American folk tune, acclaimed Chinese pipa virtuoso Wu Man recognizes similarities to Chinese pentatonic music and spontaneously joins in. The joy on their faces says it all.

Hurrah!

Latest far right malign effect - unfounded accusations of immigrants stealing wild birds to eat have led to a physical assault on a volunteer rescuing a cygnet. The Greenwich Wildlife Network statement is long, but worth a read - it's thoughtful, courageous and impeccably argued:

Old ladies immediately arrested and imprisoned for holding up signs to protest the deaths of tens of thousands of innocent civilians. Far right thug uses what looks like an illegal knife to slash a boat, endangering a life. And here I am many hours later waiting for any kind of police action.

It’s time for a zero tolerance crack down on far right thugs. They’re costing the taxpayer, soaking up police resources, intimidating peaceful communities & delaying the measures that are reducing the asylum backlog & its cost. Enough is enough. End the menace. www.theguardian.com/world/2026/s...

Your regular reminder: If the Russians stop fighting, the war ends. If the Ukrainians stop fighting, their land will be occupied, their leaders will be killed, their history and language will be erased, their children will be kidnapped to serve Russia.

I’m just a person on my fucking knees begging the government to use its absolutely massive majority to do something extremely fucking popular: save our democracy.

Fuck me, but it's all awful. Again. Taking consolation from having sorted things out in the cellar, moving a pot of dahlias in the garden and planning a(nother) trip to Mexico. We take our comfort where we can.

I want the Prime Minister to look into a TV camera and say the RNLI are heroes, that we do not change policy by street violence in this country, and that he expects any criminal action to face the full force of the law. That's it. That's all he has to do.

I am annoyed that this is now my most popular post here on Bluesky. If you want more, I wrote a book about scientific racism called How to Argue With a Racist, and another one called Control: The Dark History and Troubling Present of Eugenics. www.adamrutherford.com/allbooks

I had not some across this before, but if you want an example Nathan Cofnas’ scholarship, this is a doozy. Again I say, being sacked is not the problem; being recruited in the first place is what deserves scrutiny.

This.

Sam Freedman@samfr.bsky.social

I wish media outlets would describe Nathan Cofnas as a racist rather than a "self-defined race realist" which doesn't mean anything to most people. His writing meets any definition of racism however narrowly and cautiously drawn.

The palaver of updating addresses with every institution is quite something. They all do it very slightly differently but almost without exception the process is extremely circuitous. And if you're not phone or computer literate, god help you.

I genuinely cannot understand how the Labour government has now had two, genuinely cultured prime ministers who both looked at Lisa Nandy’s record there and went “I’m pleased with this. I want this to continue.”

This is insane! So yes please Mr Burnham. Tax the buggers who should pay but don't.

Marie Phillips@mariephillips.bsky.social

Just learned that our local cheese shop - a small, single-venue store in South Norwood - will be paying more corporation tax this year than the whole of Starbucks UK. Maybe Andy Burnham's Labour Party should take a look at that.

F*ck.

My strongest memory of Starmer will be his 2024 conference speech, where he said "every child deserves respect", a young activist said "does that include the children of Gaza?", and he laughed and said "he's obviously got a pass to the 2019 conference".

My friend (& former author) @proffrancesca.bsky.social is set to lose her job, along with her colleagues across the humanities. That successive governments & now even the Russell Group cannot value these vital subjects is a disgrace. We need the humanities even more than ever.

Guess what? I’m at risk of redundancy. My job - and those of my colleagues in my department and across our wider faculty of Humanities, Arts, and Social Sciences - is one of those currently targeted for cuts. I received a personal letter today. www.bbc.co.uk/news/article...
