The Geneva #HFSPmtg2026 is incredibly inspiring. This is what true interdisciplinary science looks like. Terrific talks by colleagues across all disciplines and coffee discussions leading to exciting new research ideas on the horizon. A huge thank you to the wonderful @hfspo.bsky.social community!🙏

What does frontier science look like? 🧪 At #HFSPmtg2026, it spans everything from cell migration and photosynthesis to evolution, plant biology or ocean microbiomes. Different questions. Different approaches. One community exchanging ideas across disciplines! 💪 #HFSP #sts

On May 1st our 5-year EU African vaccine initiative started to test CHIKV vaccines in phase IIIb studies in Kenya & Tanzania. Very much looking forward to exciting joint work with our partners from @kemriwellcome.bsky.social, Ifakara Health Institute, EPFL, Valneva, @ki.se, @isciiisalud.bsky.social.

Apologies for being a bit quiet lately. Now catching up. Magda Benitez from #CINVESTAV was a visiting PhD student in the lab and used some of our tools to assess DENV - host factor interactions. It was great to have her. Always fun to host such motivated, skilled and nice students from abroad! 🙏

To all those amazing female colleagues out there and also to those male colleagues who support #womeninSTEM: Happy World Women‘s Day! 👏 Ain’t no mountain high enough….let us continue our efforts towards #genderequality on the planet.

Exciting work by @karimaj.bsky.social, btw a former @umeauniversitet.bsky.social fellow. Check it out.

We found a viral Trojan Horse: a virus can hide inside another virus. This one surprised us: deltaviruses don’t just borrow a helper virus. They can travel inside it. A literal Trojan Horse “virus-in-a-virus” route into cells. 🤯 Kudos to 1st author @viroscope.bsky.social and co-authors !

How could a simple self-replicating system emerge at the origins of life? RNA polymerase ribozymes can replicate RNA, but existing ones are so large that their self-replication seems impossible. Could they be smaller? Excited to share our latest work in @science.org on a new small polymerase. 1/n

Team GG‘s first Innsbruck #Master student, Marie Parigger, defended her thesis on Tspans in #alphavirus #species #transmission. 😃Congratulations Marie! 👏 Also to Anja de Bruin, her superb lab #supervisor. 🙏The meme created by Marie makes us feel strong to face future challenges. 😉#lovevirology

The #InstituteOfVirologyInnsbruck (IVI) kicked off 2026 with our retreat on arbovirology, respiratory viruses, viral diagnostics and applied virology. 😃Our 2 keynotes @danielaweiskopf & Niklas Arnberg from @umeauniversitet gave new insights on CHIKV T cell responses and adenoviruses. 🙏🤩

Thanks a lot to the Tübingen virologists Tina Ganzenmüller, @sauterlab.bsky.social, Michael Schindler, Thomas Iftner et al. for hosting me yesterday. It was lovely to be back at my #AlmaMater and present and discuss our latest work on #alphavirus, i.e. CHIKV & VEEV - host interaction. #lovevirology

Congratulations to the new #GfV board of directors 👏and thank you to Ulf Dittmer, Sandra Ciesek, Klaus Überla, Jörg Timm and Stephie Pfänder for the past productive period. 🙏Happy to serve on the advisory board again and that my “baby”, the connection to the #Swedish #virologist 🇸🇪is well received.

Good news for Austria! Out of curiosity, what about mAbs? Sweden has just decided to offer a shot of monoclonal antibody profylaxis to new-borns.

Great news. The RSV vaccine will be freely available for newborns from October onwards. Effective protection from the most common cause of severe respiratory tract infection in newborns and toddlers.
