We engineer both plants and bacteria to establish non-standard amino acids as a new molecular language for programming plant-microbe interactions. This work contributes to the growing toolkit for precision agriculture and we hope it accelerates the path to a sustainable future!

1/ How do cells divide when they're stuck in something squishy? Most of what we know about the cell cycle comes from yeast in liquid or on flat plates, but in nature they live in dough, mucus, soil and tissue. This new paper asks what that does to division. Love this one!

Our paper on apoptotic chromatin compaction is out now! Take a look in @embojournal.org, where we investigate compaction in living and dying cells, and show that histone deacetylation prevents DNA from spilling into extracellular vesicles in apoptosis @gerlichlab.bsky.social @imbavienna.bsky.social

Congratulations to the authors on this very comprehensive study of protein turnover during starvation in E. coli! Definitely worth a read if you care about bacteria living outside of steady state exponential growth (and you should!)

1. It’s not what you had planned for the project? 2. It’s not the field you were trained in? 3. It’s not certain to work? In science, as in art, the trick is to be open to going wherever the project directs you.
