Trying to bring humans and technology together since last century. Often the "someone" mentioned in xkcd 386. he/him (Being exnominated, I don't need you to care about my pronouns. But I do care about getting yours right.) https://hans.gerwitz.com

Hi! Welcome to my #introduction thread: In the 20th century I was a libertarian software engineer in Missouri, now I'm a socialist design executive living in Europe. …

Is there a name for this "Schoolhouse Rock" illustration style, which I find so much more joyful than Corporate Memphis?

Nick Seaver@nickseaver.website

stumbled on a set of incredible 1970s illustrations in some government reports, so had to spend a day collecting them into a website to share with my friends on the computer: nickseaver.net/paperwork

If you're interested in international traffic standards, visual semiotics, or cows, maybe you'll appreciate this silly poster I made today.

Go to your camera roll and search “boat” and post one that you like

Occasionally I would like to remind people that I wrote a whole book about this. Intelligence is multiple, embodied, and relational, and what matters is different intelligences working together for mutual flourishing.

Adam Becker@adambecker.bsky.social

It's important to remember that the AI doom scenario assumes not only that intelligence is a single well-defined thing, but also that intelligence solves literally every single problem, and that in every conflict overwhelming intelligence always wins. This is just not how anything works.

I've been working on a AI tool focused on aviation investigation and analysis. I think it's incredibly sick, the coolest thing I've done since GPSJAM, and I use it every day. I'm going to post some examples of how I've used it lately in this thread. This is the collision at LAX yesterday.

Why not?

Current Affairs@currentaffairs.bsky.social

Robots should look and sound like robots. There is no benefit to allowing AI to appear human, and companies will exploit the confusion to demand “AI rights,” further cementing their oligarchical control. www.currentaffairs.org/news/ban-lif...

Well, I’ve certainly been put in my place by Mr. Testosterone.

A truly well educated person would know that you can be dumb as a box of rocks and be “educated”. An educated person would know that insulting people who you don’t know is no way to hold a conversation. Go swing your dick elsewhere

Sad to see Margaret Hamilton go, but she had a long and productive life. My deep disappointment is that she had to watch our idea of “leader in computing” shift to people like Andreessen, Musk, and Altman.

First the LLMs claimed my use of em-dashes, and then Claude took “load-bearing” from me. Go emulate someone else, FFS.

They are a natural result of unfettered capitalism. We figured that out, once, and reigned them in; but that was generations ago.

This post is unavailable.

And one of the bigger flaws of the American Experiment is they (accidentally) made the foundations too hard to change, so we lack the institutional memory to apply lessons learned like _concentrated economic power will undermine everything_.

BLUESKY HELP Every few days I call my 83 year old grandma with a joke. I am low on jokes. Can you give me a joke to call her with? I will thread some jokes she liked to give you an idea of what lands. If I tell your joke to her I will give you a score out of 10 on how much she laughed.

It's silly how many people are bothering to dunk on this one tweet's misuse of "Olde English". Especially when the source article by a senior writer is so ripe for ridicule. "As befitting a filmmaker who is known for his meticulous attention to detail…actors speaking in Olde English." 😆

DiscussingFilm@discussingfilm.net

Robert Eggers is set to direct a new film adaptation of ‘ROMEO AND JULIET’. The film will feature the actors speaking in Olde English. (Source: www.hollywoodreporter.com/movies/movie...)

As someone who once enjoyed driving 125mph on US interstates, I feel qualified to +1 this. Extra oomph to escape accidents in progress can be good, but there is no reason to enable dangerous sustained speeds.

The War on Cars@thewaroncars.bsky.social

The driver’s behavior before and after the crash is sociopathic. But also, no car operated on public roads should be able to go 100 mph, much less 142 mph.

Romania is lovely and I really appreciate finding milieus that are on the edge of cultural legibility for me. Is this place more like my American Midwest roots? Or Mexico City? Or other Eastern European cities? It is its own place, but also like so many others.

My plan to move public opinion on matters important to me is to spend a portion of my day reposting every article and zinger I see go by that agrees with me to an audience of people who follow me because they find this behavior tolerable. I’m pretty sure this will work eventually.

Take a break from being depressed that everything you love is being destroyed by slop for a moment and let me tell you about the beautiful symbiotic relationship between graffiti writers, train yard workers, and model train enthusiasts.

it's a very old rule of moderated digital spaces that you need an "i know it when i see it" clause for harassment or else bad actors will aggressively toe the line without ever technically going over. that's why i don't think the "why cant you give me an exact definition" replies will go anywhere

Bluesky Safety@safety.bsky.app

Dogpiling or harassing users is unacceptable. We have taken recent action against accounts for this behavior, and we will be increasing our efforts, consistent with our Community Guidelines.

@rmendes.net I'm curius about your indiekit bluesky syndicator, and why you chose not to use the built-in one? (I've just deployed the first-party plugin, but am itchy for more features.)
