Fun fact: According to the Gunbuster novels (translation courtesy of @theideon.bsky.social), the Exelion is 7,205 m, accommodating up to 25,000 people. "To give an example of its magnificence, five train lines moved people within the interior of the ship." In effect, it doubles as a space colony.

The Exelion was designed by none other than Kazutaka Miyatake, of Yamato fame, who designed the space ships featured in Gunbuster! Presumably, Anno and Miyatake met during the production of Super Dimension Fortress Macross (1982-83). He would later go on to assist with the DAICON IV opening, too.
