The assignment I've been looking forward to all semester: Marxist analysis of Stuart Little. As a lifelong fan of children's literature (I have read it for my own enjoyment at every age) raised by a socialist, this is my time to shine. Hold my beer.

"Gerry was a wild-eyed eccentric and an awkward speaker, a trusted confidant of John Adams and a deep (if peculiar) thinker. He could also be a dyspeptic hothead—a trait that got the better of him when he signed the infamous redistricting bill."

A notable theme in latest round of “fan mail” after this is seemingly older white men arguing that being sexually abused makes you “crazy” and therefore unfit to lead. It's not that they don’t believe she wasn't abused, it's that they do. 19thnews.org/2026/10/amy-...

My son's preK-5 public school is very international, with more than 30 languages spoken by students. Every year, the school hosts an international potluck. It's one of my favorite nights of the entire year. It's tonight and I just realized it's our last one. Bakin' a cake, feelin' kinda sad.

I've mentioned before I've updated my contracts to make sure everything in the production of my books is done by humans and not "AI"; if you're wondering what such a thing looks like, here's a clause covering that from a recent contract.

Today, I have applied the thinking of Joseph Campbell and Jacques Derrida to E.B. White's Stuart Little. The number of life events that cumulatively produce this outcome would astonish you.

SCOOP: 'Tommy' from the now-viral exchange with Abdul El-Sayed is Thomas Teepell, a former staffer for Republican Senator Josh Hawley with close ties to Christian Nationalist Sean Feucht. He's the son of a former Bobby Jindal staffer whose consultant work was instrumental in getting Hawley elected.

I thought I had at least passing familiarity with conspiracy theories until the man sitting next to me at the Lebanon, OH Skyline told me “space ain’t real.” “What do you think is between us and the moon?” an employee asked. The man seemed to think about this for a moment. “The moon…is with us.”

Reading American Hagwon and can't put it down, which might be a problem b/c it's more than 600 pages long. But so damn engrossing. I am deeply invested in multiple generations of multiple fictional families spread across 3 continents. cardinal-publishing.com/titles/min-j...

Have craved Gates since ep 1 of the latest season of Ted Lasso, even though it was sort of a jazz hands rendition of the service vibe. Am in KC. Am going to Gates.

And yes, there are arguments to be made for other kc bbq joints but this is my nostalgia bbq, it's what I grew up on. That's not up for debate.

If you're looking for an experienced national journalist, I have 23 years at NPR under my belt. That includes time as an editor and planning coverage for a dispersed team of staff and freelance reporters.

Went canoeing on a pond in Massachusetts surrounded by trees with leaves changing color, and dotted with lillypads ALSO CHANGING COLOR!!! The water was so still that it perfectly reflected the big white fluffy clouds in the sky. Like drifting into a painting.

The government *still* isn’t tracking how often immigration agents detain U.S. citizens. We are. 500+ Americans have been handcuffed, held at gunpoint or held against their will in Trump’s second term. Our tally is almost certainly an undercount. THREAD (content warning: violence) ⬇️

"It's trying to render individual cartoonists obsolete because we cost money and take time." Thorough and illuminating reporting on ChatGPT pilfering the work (and signatures!!!) of New Yorker cartoonists.

ChatGPT is adding the signatures of real New Yorker cartoonists to its AI-generated images. So far, I've found the signatures of more than 15 contributors. "It’s slop, and unlike the other slop that I’ve encountered, this is slop that’s pretending to be me." www.niemanlab.org/2026/10/chat...

Added a physical newspaper on Sundays to our Boston Globe subscription and it is here, spread out on the ding room table... turns out, this is what it takes to make me feel like an actual adult.

NEW: As Trump’s White House and influencers keep touting the unproven benefits of raw milk, hundreds across the country are falling ill from outbreaks. Some people get severe indigestion. And some nearly die. Here's the story of one toddler who drank it. 🧵👇 www.propublica.org/article/cali...

propublica.orgA Girl Nearly Died After Drinking Raw Milk. The State Did Little to Punish the Unlicensed Farmer Who Sold It.California is teeming with black-market dairies, propped up by consumer demand fueled by misinformation. Surely there's a company other than Amazon that sells kids' watches... but I admittedly have a lot of requirements. Digital, not smart, ideally no plastic (but if I have to cave on something, I guess this is it), and yeah... not on Amazon. Help.

i think a study of Kansas democrats who have won statewide and congressional district races in the last 10 years would be illuminating. Current governor Laura Kelly, current 3rd district congresswoman Sharice Davids (who is also indigenous + LGBTQ), mayyyyybe Adam Hamilton... we shall see.

What do they have in common? What lessons might apply beyond the state? I have seen plenty of examples of Kansas foreshadowing national trends while appearing anomolous. Why not take a closer look, not as 3 seperate stunners but as a repeat phenomenon? I know, too soon...

This just in: I stopped re-reading 1984. I’m just gonna read the news instead. However, I will say, re-reading just a little reminded me how important the centralization of economic power in govt hands was to that particular dystopia. There is also a lot of dust!!! Like seriously, so much dust.
