Correct. And unclear there wld even be pause. Keep in mind RU doesn’t occupy much of annexed Zaporozhia and Kherson oblasts. Nor does it or would it control Kyiv.
❗️Polish Foreign Minister Sikorski emphasizes that Russia’s war against Ukraine is not only about territory. Giving up the last two cities in Donbas would bring only a temporary pause, because without Ukraine Russia loses

Thread. More on this. Also: “Stubb and Støre emphasized that Finland and Norway will continue their longstanding support for Ukraine.”
Important: Finnish President Alexander Stubb and Norwegian Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Støre held a phone call with Vladimir Putin to discuss Russia's invasion of Ukraine and the ongoing peace talks. The call was "frank and substantive".
What they told Putin matters, but regardless this shld be an EU thing, not individual EUR leaders going solo.
Finland's Stubb & Norway's Støre phoned Putin today, prepared with Kyiv, ahead of Abu Dhabi talks. Both sides talk of a "just" peace, but Moscow's version means Russia's interests fully met. Denmark's Frederiksen calls it an uncoordinated solo move. Either way, it’s a major development

Serbia also remains one of Europe's few remaining buyers of Russian natural gas, underscoring a dependence that leaves Moscow supplying about 80% of its total gas imports. Therefore, the question of sanctions against Russia is likely to remain one of the most sensitive tests for the new government.

Thread. Takeaway: another Trump nothing burger. And an economic nothing burger for RU (albeit not a political nothing burger for RU).
❗️Russian refineries have ramped up diesel output following the October 9 agreement between Putin and Trump on supplying Russian fuel to the US and global markets, accompanied by a temporary lifting of sanctions. According to Reuters,

In a better world, this might be possible if coupled with limitations on RU troop deployments. Even if Trump agreed to end/limit US presence in Poland, the Baltics, and/or Finland, other NATO states won’t go along. Also, the next POTUS cld reverse the decision bc no chance of a ratified treaty.
Russia may demand that NATO roll back its military presence in Europe to 1997 levels as part of renewed Ukraine peace talks, The Telegraph reports. The move could mean withdrawing allied forces from Poland, the Baltic states and Finland. www.kyivpost.com/post/88182

Good. There is another America still alive over there. And I suspect it's going to get louder.
BREAKING!! Seven bipartisan lawmakers warn U.S. banks, fuel distributors and port authorities that importing Russian diesel could invite legal action and congressional scrutiny, while helping fund Moscow’s war in Ukraine.
Well that would be good. But clearly there’s a lot of uncertainty about the new government in Belgrade.
Serbia’s former president Aleksandar Vucic conceded his coalition’s defeat in Sunday’s parliamentary election and predicted that the next government would impose sanctions on Russia by March or April. www.kyivpost.com/post/88193
Thread. Doubt this goes anywhere, assuming the Dems take at least the House in the midterms. My impression is that virtually all these Trump mega deals turn out to be nothing burgers (Gaza, UKR, Greenland, etc). Partial exception is Venezuela, but even that isn’t the bonanza Trump claims.
So, Trump confirmed the agreements regarding Russia's Lukoil assets and the Alaska LNG project. Speaking to reporters before a flight to Michigan, Trump emphasized that he does not want the global energy sector to "remain held hostage by the war in Ukraine". >>> www.asiae.co.kr/en/article/2...
That’s a lot of Storm Shadows. UKR must have thought the plant was particularly important to RU’s long-range strike missiles. Hope that’s right.
On October 25, the Ukrainian Air Force struck the Energia plant in Yelets with Storm Shadow cruise missiles. At least seven impacts were recorded across multiple buildings. The plant produces power sources used in Iskander-M/K, Zircon, Kinzhal and Pantsir missiles. #Ukraine

Yup, the way to do it: “Politely delivered, but firm.”
Trump: "Frankly Norway sucks. Norway has become a shithouse country" Norwegian Foreign Minister Eide: "Trump is currently in the midst of an election campaign that perhaps isn’t going very well for his party, and that leads him to say a lot of things." www.bloomberg.com/news/article...
Yup. And IMO he shld stick to those demands.
That's the right bargaining stance from Zelenskyy. The bundle of three conditions - Moscow stops bombing; Musk-Trump extend Starlink help; and Trump-Hegseth give Patriots - is the only one that makes sense, and it is the right test of American and Russian honesty.

Thread. 💯% agree, notably including this:”… until military/economic/political conditions convince Putin that military domination of Ukraine is no longer a viable option, Russia won't agree to any deal giving Ukraine real security guarantees…”
I thought this article on backchannel US-Russia diplomacy was a fascinating read with great reporting, and it seems to me a lot of the online reaction is missing the point due to a fundamental misunderstanding of how negotiations like this work and what they're for. 1/ www.ft.com/content/dcb5...

Thread. I think this is right, but I also think RU-UKR is an easier issue for GOP pols to use to distance themselves from Trump after the midterms than the ME. There’s IMO no RU equivalent to the Israeli lobby in DC, to understate the case (despite RU influence ops). We’ll see.
Thoughts: 1) measures feelings but not strength/salience; 2) sharing of intelligence is a low cost, low-risk proposition and other polls show support beyond provision of aid drops. 3) not seeing where Ukraine issue will cause voter to change. Ds/Rs will vote no matter Trump 1/

One thing Trump didn’t that I thought he probably wld before the midterms is try a Venezuela on Cuba. Part of the reason is likely Iran going so badly, but maybe also bc he was told and came to understand that Cuba wld be a tougher target, esp after Cuba learned/took measures from the Venezuela op.
Iran’s message is stark: If the U.S. and Israel restart their air campaign, Tehran will respond with strikes not only on American bases and warships but on airports, pipelines and other civilian targets in the neighboring countries of the Persian Gulf.
