A deep interest in the 8-bit and 16-bit computer age. That period of immense technological change for the business and home computer user. Commodore, Amiga, Apple II, Atari, early IBM and so many other systems that defined the computer revolution.

MT RAM chips are known for their failure rates 🤬, especially the MT 4264, a 64K x 1 bit chip. They can fail completely, though TIL that often they fail partially and may still be usable as a 32K x 1 bit chip, like either the OKI MSM3732 or a TI TMS4532 🤔 github.com/tops4u/Ram-T... Not half bad.

Apparently, the 4164/4264 were so popular but prone to failure, that OKI sold the half failing chips as MSM3732 and Texas Instruments sold them as the TMS4532. OKI's as either -L (low or -H (high) and Texas Instruments sold them as -3s (low) or -4s (high).

My heart is heavy. Walter Koenig, our Ensign Pavel Chekov, passed away early today. Walter and I met on the bridge of the Enterprise in the 1960s, and we stayed friends for nearly six decades. When Brad and I married in 2008, Walter stood beside us as our best man.

Well it's done. It needed 11 memory chips replaced, one 74LS125, a few new tantalum caps, an XT-IDE, floppy drives cleaned, and a network card. Sad it's over. It was a great adventure but the IBM 5150 is functional again. Old Lunker. Makes my monitor look small. 🧐 I guess I'll just play a game.

A similar thing happened when someone hacked the newer model roomba. Yes your roomba is spying on you. www.technologyreview.com/2022/12/19/1...

Had to jump through some hoops but The IBM 5150 has a working Intel EtherExpress 16TP and is connected to the InterWebs ... OK, not the Webs, just the FTPs and Telnets. Maybe the Gophers. 🐀🐁 It connected to its first BBS! 20forbeers.com:1337 LEET!

In order to configure the Intel Ether Express 16PT, I got a socket 7 ASUS SP97-V motherboard with an AMD K6 CPU. It has been a blast from the past with jumper settings depending on the CPU used among other things. It has been a LONG time since I last configured a motherboard using jumpers.

I am back from 2 weeks of international travel and getting ready for Sunday Funday from The Amiga Saloon! Lots to catch up on. See you tomorrow October 25th - 2pm EDT/6pm GMT/8pm CEST #commodore #commodoreamiga #retrogamer #retrogaming #indiegame LINK: twitch.tv/amigabill

Testing the 24 pin One ROM in the IBM 5150. Allows me to have GlaBIOS, the original IBM Oct 27, 1982 BIOS, the XTROMtest ROM and the Supersoft/Landmark diagnostic ROM on one chip that I can switch to as needed. I really love this project, lots of plans where this will work within DOS. onerom.org

I joined the RIFA smoking club this weekend. Took some #Macintosh computers to our #LAVCC meetup Saturday. And reveled in the smell of burning plastic and sadness.

I love these old IBM 5150 machines, there is this delicate balance on if and when to modernize it a bit. The drives are an easy choice for me, esp the HD. That old tech is ageing. But what about a perfectly good BIOS .. especially the old, slow, 60 second IBM version? GlaBIOS is so much faster!

It's NES day, and also my 10th wedding anniversary. No I did not plan it that way. If you wanna get me a gift, all I want is for you to watch this if you haven't, it took me 15 years to make.

41 years ago today* the Nintendo Entertainment System was introduced, in a wild, risky, and completely unlikely way. If you haven't seen our documentary yet, put aside 45 minutes and see the NES as you never have before. *We can't substantiate this date, It's Complicated but probably correct(ish)

The IBM 5150 continues to come together. Almost finished. Two 5.25" full height drives working, a CGA card, RAM/Parallel/Serial/RTC card, floppy controller that is capable of 1.4M drives, and since this beast really needs a C: drive, an XT-IDE with a 30MB partition. Waiting on an Ethernet card. 😁

PSA 📢 : Don't put the resistor packs in backwards. 🤪

I got this XT-IDE kit so that I could eventually have a "hard drive" in the IBM 5150 that I'm restoring. The XT-IDE by Glitch Works is an open source project. I just love open source hardware!! Especially when it comes to keeping these old machines alive! www.glitchwrks.com/xt-ide

Slowly putting the IBM 5150 back together. Motherboard working, now I have a working keyboard. Inserted the RAM expansion/Parallel/Serial/RTC board and got a Parity 2 error .. bad RAM. Tested 54 chips. 11 dead (found another after pix). All bad chips are MT. I had enough to keep me at 576K

Setting up a remote desktop session from a SPARCstation LX over to a Sun Ultra 1. Using the LX like this, makes the experience so much faster, super zippy!

Tough day 🥴 .. my copper tape didn't work. The adhesive side is not very conductive. Ordered a different brand. Tomorrow, until the new copper tape arrives, I'm going to play the Tetris and Zelda that I bought for the NES at the @retrogamingexpo.bsky.social. Oh, gotta get the flu shot too.

It Works!! 🥳 I had to pull the copper tape I had previously used and then tediously cut and laid down the new copper tape onto the thin film plastic circuit board for the keyboard. I don't know how long it'll last but it worked! 🎉 And it is so clean!

Spent the evening repairing traces on a thin film/plastic sheet thing belonging to a Honeywell XT/AT keyboard. Used Caig's "Circuit Writer" conductive ink/gel/paint pen Must be patient and not touch it til this time tomorrow. Each area in blue is where the original trace was damaged.

Well the Caig Circuit Writer worked like 💩 ... like not at all. I don't know if I got a bad batch or what!?! So, I made use of all that copper tape I had laying around. Not easy, difficult to get the copper tape to really attach to those traces .. I think I'm making progress but it is slow!

My day involves a stack of Atari computers, a laser disc player, digitizer, CRT, former Atari employee, and an ultra rare Atari cosmos How’s your day going?

On Ebay, tons of these "Cycle Logic" CGA video cards. All about $35-$45 .. but so many of them, I was wondering if it was some sort of scam/hoax. So I bought one .. and they work well! Retro 8086/8088 is popular in China, they made condensed versions of IBM's CGA card. 8086cpu.com/lm6/79.html

I loaded Basic (DOS 3.21 version) on my freshly resurrected Atari PC3 the other week. I had no idea how to much more than this.

I'm surprised IBM didn't update their ROMs with a non-cassette version of BASIC. I mean, this machine does have two huge floppy drives. I do ❤️ that BASIC is a basic part of the machine. No keyboard yet, working on that, the Honeywell XT/AT keyboard has broken traces on the thin plastic sheet thing.

Cleaning an old XT/AT keyboard. I've cleaned old keyboards where the keys are just ugh and gooey ... this one, the keys ain't so bad but underneath!! Eeek!
