I was starting to lose steam on The Disappearers until the final section, which is the kind of thing you should’ve anticipated, and yet (at least in my case) didn’t. Smart and inevitable without being too smartly inevitable.

What I like about this piece is that it neither condescends nor bloviates. An apt metaphor and a succinct recommendation, it neither overstates nor apologizes.

The best parts of Nintendo Switch Sports Resort are meaningfully indistinguishable from Wii Sports Resort. That sameness is fascinating. What if some videogames are essentially new editions of classic board games? My latest! Please enjoy & share (if it's good): medium.com/@abrambuehne...

Great profile, but this particular sentence seemed unreflective of the modern media landscape. I wish all media had the brevity of books! Compared to the bloat of videogames, streaming, and connected universes, even a doorstopper of a novel is refreshingly concise.

This year’s The Disappearers, called by some critics (while praising it) arduous and difficult, takes approximately 12 hours to read. Brother, you can’t even finish Cai’s path in Fire Emblem in that time!

People think they don’t have the attention span for books, but it’s just not true on a time commitment level. A different kind of attention is called for, sure, but as “short” games demand at least 10–20 hours of your time, reading a 400-page novel is not outside of one’s capacity.

There’s an essay to be written about the structure of Fortune’s Weave and its similarities to the structure of The Disappearers. Maybe not a good essay, but definitely *an* essay.

The essay is essentially “both revisit events, possibly too many times, from several vantages, requiring endurance from the audience in order to access the riches within.” So not so much an essay as a post, I guess.

Had this moment of emotional clarity this morning on my run that, no matter how the marathon goes, the real thing that I'm proud of is the running, the practice, the doing. Tried to bring that back to my writing. We are not guaranteed success, but we can always show up. That's all there is.

On the off chance one does have a soul, I implore you to consider protecting it.

Huge follow-up reporting to my scoop: The Guardian confirmed America Next—the conservative nonprofit founded by Bobby Jindal that was offering students $ to disrupt El-Sayed events—paid a firm registered to Tommy Teepell’s dad Timmy $250k for “canvassing and influencer marketing” against El-Sayed.

On the last chapter of Cai’s Act I, and I’m wondering whether this isn’t a game you’re meant to return to later. It’s almost like a box set of fantasy books. Sure, you can binge them all in one go, but momentary closure isn’t a bad thing.

I’m toggling between The Disappearers and Fortune’s Weave, so apparently it’s Doorstopper Autumn for me. Might need to sprinkle some short stories in the mix just to have something more manageable in the mix.

No joke. I think this is the most important video I have ever seen about mobile games. This guy breaks down how this game psychologically profiles you, and makes the game harder or easier in order to show you ads

Nobody show my wife this essay. She’s already determined to make our house into a pig sanctuary eventually.
