[Trying out AI company-style marketing] South of the March is coming. I don't how to stop it. If you don't wishlist the game, it will fire you from your job. It will still fire you if you wishlist it. Every time I look at it, I get scared. Wishlist the game now. You are in danger. s.team/a/4628420/

Just finished "Faster Than Light" by @jamielendino.com, about the Atari ST series of computers. Great book! I owned a 1040ST from 1987 to 1994, basically all of high school and college. But where is my nostalgia gene? Each computer becomes garbage for me when the new one appears. I'm a monster.

It's been a lot of fun trying the Duo out for a week, but it feels like I've gotten to use an extraordinarily polished prototype -- not a finished product that I'd want to buy and carry.
Giving Claude the zero-effort prompt to "make it a LOT more fun" is the dictionary definition of creating slop. Boo to this. But not boo to Simon.
I built a Command & Conquer style RTS called Battle Drones, mainly using Claude Opus 5.5, which runs in the browser and includes device-to-device multiplayer over an audio link simonwillison.net/2026/Oct/20/...
Nice. Describing LLMs as “cheapeners” is wonderfully double-edged. Those who crave cheapening (the creators, and the boosters who are wannabe mathematicians) will appreciate the word because of its negative connotation, and good people will appreciate the word for the same reason.

The oligarchs who have taken over as math’s communications team are alienating regular people. I absolutely relate to this student’s loss of morale. Also, not enough discourse is focused on the personal gain those bigwigs are getting.

This article says the implications of the newly proved quasi-Riemann hypothesis are "staggering" - but it doesn't mention any. So what are they?

Hey, media people! Read this thread! Stop trying to interview the same few super-famous mathematicians about AI. It's like interviewing the two or three wealthiest people in the US about how inflation affects their ability to buy food.
Short thread asking @nytimes.com and other MSM to stop interviewing the same small handful of people every time something math-related comes up. Mathematicians are dismayed when AI scoops them on the results? How about look for advice from someone familiar with getting scooped and outpowered.
Katie Miller said “For societies to grow and societies to flourish and for there to be bonds to be between you and I … it has to have this common culture and, unfortunately we’ve lost that.” Nearly honest! We still have to replace "for societies to grow and flourish" with "for me to feel good."
A fantastic new take on a remote desktop from Mac to iOS. It works so well, and operates at the window level, unlike Sidecar, which feels right. The graphical fidelity was perfect, unlike Steam Link. Apple Pencil hovering works like mouseover. It's all here. getsill.app/index.html

The uncertainty principle tells us that the more you know about where a quantum particle is, the less you can know about how fast it’s moving, and vice versa. Recently, this rule got a rare upgrade. Hear more on The Quanta Podcast: podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/h...

I don’t know what kind of lectures you’re attending today, wherever you are in the world, but I’m pretty sure your lecturer didn’t show up dressed as a hobbit, with a pipe instead of a laser pointer! 🧙♂️ Yes, this is the first lecture of Digital Tolkien, taught by @jtauber.com.

Why, oh why, does this idea need a fresh, long explanation? Isn’t everyone already seeing this? It is RIGHT THERE. Has been for 40 years. Maybe 160. We can’t exit until everyone gets tired of it. Are we still in the early phase of understanding? Please no.
The takeaway from Bo French suggesting Asian students are “foreigners” and the tepid GOP response is that the Trump-era Republican Party is increasingly explicit about its belief that the only good immigrants, and the only real Americans, are white. (Gift link) www.theatlantic.com/ideas/2026/1...

This is a worthy proposal, as you might expect from Grant. My PhD advisor, John Morgan, spent time writing books that packaged difficult material like Donaldson theory, Seiberg-Witten theory, and the proof of the Poincaré conjecture. These created lots of momentum and understanding.
