Moscow has so far earned an estimated $1.3bn-$1.9bn windfall from taxes on oil exports, making it the biggest winner from the conflict in the Middle East. What does this mean for energy markets and the Russian economy? ft.trib.al/E4zE2us

Guaranteed this is a clear sign they are panicking about time 😆 but you know ‘4D chess’ and all that…

‘We have unparalleled firepower, unlimited ammunition, and plenty of time’, the US president said, as observers watch for signs of an end to the conflict. Follow today’s blog for the latest news and analysis: ft.trib.al/kNHIpiR

Great to see some shots of mine being used to illustrate the interesting work @basecamp-research.bsky.social are doing in the aid of scientific research. A fun commission shadowing their teams in Malta last year.

Can’t believe this is not a post from the Onion…

Secretary of State Marco Rubio said that sans serif fonts aren’t suited for world-class diplomacy and ordered the department to drop Calibri in favor of Times New Roman, reversing a Biden-era policy intended to help employees who are visually impaired.

All the rape, torture, and murder will be brushed under the carpet, a great lesson for any future war criminals.

Many years ago I was asked to present a TV doc on Cathy Leroy - we interviewed friends & colleagues who knew her, even visited her mother in Paris who’d preserved her childhood room complete with various awards & published work. Sadly we never got funding. Hers is a story waiting to be told.

In the early 1960s a senior Conservative minister, John Profumo, resigned and inflicted perhaps decisive damage to the electoral prospects of his party for a decade ….. for far less than this

In Britain, a former far-right Reform party politician has been convicted of taking bribes to promote Russian viewpoints. Another scandal that should be the end of Reform but will be ignored unless we make a lot of noise about it.

Nigel Farage, whose party recently put a teenager with zero work experience of any kind in charge of an entire English county, accuses the government of appointing people "with no knowledge" or experience in charge of Government departments

🚨 Russian fascists send kidnapped Ukrainian children turning 18 to the front line in Ukraine. Estimated to be in the thousands. Ukrainian soldiers discovered the Ukrainian teenagers' corpses on the battlefields. These kids would have been 14 at the time of abduction in 2022.

Are Private Eye jokes now... criminal? PALESTINE Solidarity campaigner Jon Farley was arrested during a silent march in Leeds last weekend. What egregious act had prompted the police to act? He was, er, carrying a Private Eye joke piece as a placard! (1/2)

America cannot long remain free, nor first among nations, if it becomes the kind of place where universities are dismantled because they don't align politically with the current head of the government.

I sent out this piece yesterday. Trump's final plan is basically Russia's plan, which would legitimize Russian conquests and provide Russia the best possible situation in which to rebuild its military--while giving Ukraine nothing. Europe needs to stand with Ukraine now.

Phillips OBrien@phillipspobrien.bsky.social

OK, sent out this free piece on the details of the Trump "final" plan for Ukraine that has been seen by Axios. The 5 points have basically been dictated by Putin. They set up a process which would allow Russia to expand into all of its neighbors. open.substack.com/pub/phillips...

I tested it, because it seemed so craven, grotesque, and absurd, but if you put in the original URL it changes to the "DEI" version automatically. www.defense.gov/News/Feature...

This is blood-boiling. Charles Rogers was awarded the Medal of Honor in Vietnam after being wounded three times leading the defense of a position. Google his name and the entry below comes up. When you click, you'll see the page has been deleted and the URL changed to include "DEI medal."

Trump, the self-styled 'master negotiator', has removed any leverage for Putin to come to the table. The only possible conclusions are either/some combination of a) he's actually a terrible negotiator b) he's indifferent to what happens to Ukraine c) he wants Russia to win.

If you worked for 18F and got fired, Group together to start a consulting company. It’s just a matter of time before DOGE needs you to fix the mess they inevitably create. They will have to hire your company as a contractor to fix it. But on your terms. I’m happy to invest and/or help

Just a quick observation that amid all the turmoil created by the Zelensky meeting, this got completely ignored: A Chinese citizen paid Trump $50 million for the SEC to drop its charges against him.

Judd Legum@juddlegum.bsky.social

BREAKING The SEC has just halted its fraud prosecution of Justin Sun, a Chinese national who has put more than $50 million in Trump's pocket since November through the purchase of crypto tokens from a Trump-backed company, World Liberty Financial.

What we’re witnessing in America is what happens when disordered discourse captures a political party, then the state itself. The Republican Party was the first to fall - abandoning truth for conspiracy, ideology for grievance, and policy for performative outrage.

If you think this can’t happen outside the U.S., consider that we’re all subject to the same forces - social media-driven discourse, collapsing institutional trust, and the rise of narratives untethered from reality. It’s a systemic vulnerability in every democracy.

America is not unique. Any democracy can fall to state capture by disordered discourse if there’s no systematic response. This isn’t something we can fact-check our way out of - it’s deeper than misinformation. It’s about power, identity, and the narratives that shape reality itself.

Openly ridiculing and demeaning a man who has kept his country alive for three years against all the odds is a national embarrassment and runs counter to our own security interests.

Donald Trump is embarrassing the United States on the world stage. We are a country that stands up to dictators and fights for democracy. Minnesota stands firmly with our allies in Ukraine.

Greg Funnell reposted

I think this is the closest many of us have ever got to seeing the real Trump. The only consistent thread in his entire unhinged rant was the love & praise for Vladimir Putin. Zelensky has more courage & dignity in his little finger than every member of Trump's regime & fan club combined.

Greg Funnell reposted

This is thuggery from Trump and Vance, plain and simple. They are bullying the brave true patriot Zelensky into accepting a deal which effectively hands victory to Russia. Unless the UK and Europe step up, we are facing a betrayal of Ukraine.

Greg Funnell reposted

The most charitable possible interpretation (and it isn't that charitable): that Trump and Vance both bitterly resent someone who actually is what they pretend to be, ie a genuinely courageous figure leading an imperilled nation.
