It’s probably my fault for following the people I do, but I am rarely on Bluesky because it is just horrible news all the fucking time. Mostly horrible political news. I am already outraged, I can’t rage further, I’m already on blood pressure medication
Anyone who, in 2026, is already saying “I don’t want to vote for Newsom but I will” is part of the problem.
This man is a fucking monster and has betrayed everyone imaginable. He is unacceptable in every possible way. There is no world in which this piece of shit should be trusted with power.
Gov. Gavin Newsom on Wednesday sought to rein in a wave of legal claims that have pushed some local governments and school districts in California to the brink of bankruptcy, after earlier laws made it much easier to sue over child sexual abuse.
It's really worth building up a nice physical media collection with your favourite movies and shows, because for the prices these streaming services are charging their selections are abysmal, and have such a dearth of classic media.
Workers fought and died for the 40-hour work week over a century ago.
Nothing has changed since then, except that most families can no longer survive on a single full-time job.
But with all the advances we’ve made in over 100 years, “full-time” should be 6 hours/day, 4 days/week by now.
So I’ve run out of LLM tokens for the month at work, and this is _after_ I already got an extension. And before you go off screaming that I’m “not a real coder” or whatever, let me point out that fitting the company’s “AI-first” culture is _mandatory_. 1/
Companies want easily-exploitable workers with boundless energy, who will gladly work 60-80 hour work weeks because they’re still deluded into thinking they’ll be rewarded for it in the end. Unless you are _extremely_ lucky, **you will not**. This was true before LLMs; it is true now. 7/
Anyways, I should stop rambling and figure out how to work. On the plus side this means staving off deskilling via manual coding. I just hope the company doesn’t expect superhuman results. 8/8

Coworkers have also given me suggestions on how to reduce token usage, and that’s valid. But also, Anthropic offers Opus with a one million token context for a _reason_, while simultaneously giving tips on keeping session contexts small. It’s maddening. 5/
I know a lot of people see senior devs like me using LLM coding tools as fools and traitors. But the choice for most of us is “use AI” or “be unemployed”. See, job experience in tech is fantastic, until you hit 45 or so. Then the age discrimination kicks in _hard_. 6/

Now, could I code everything by hand and still meet the ridiculous productivity expectations put upon us? Maybe, if I were an absolute genius expert at Python and TypeScript. But I’m not. My former experience has been C, C++, and Ruby-on-Rails. It translates, but there’s a speed penalty. 3/
So here I am in the absurd position of conforming to the “company culture” _too well_. One coworker has recommended that I check my token usage daily. Great, because I totally wanted to have to balance a budget at work as well as at home. 4/

Our team uses Claude Code, which I at least think is the “least destructive” of the big LLM companies. This is admittedly a very low bar, but I take wins where I can get them. I’ve managed to get a good workflow routine going… which is apparently too token-intensive to use. 2/
As a “gifted” kid, I was told tech would make me rich.
What the adults in my life didn’t know then is you only get rich in tech if you’re (a) _extremely_ lucky to get in on the ground floor, or (b) a total fucking sociopath willing to exploit everyone and everything to achieve profit and growth. 🫠
I work for a company that does a combination of embedded hardware and SaaS to help small to medium sized factories manage their facilities, workers, and production. The _day_ I was hired, the company was bought by a huge private-equity-owned conglomerate. So far they’ve been benign, but I worry.
I was just reminded of the AT&T “You Will” campaign from 1993, and how it was _absolutely correct_ in every one of its predictions (except for the fact that AT&T would bring them to us; also, a few details like “faxing” and “video phone booths” were a bit off). 1/
For me, the combination of 9/11 and the dot-com implosion was the end of that sort of hope and optimism. Since then, my outlook has brightened at times, ebbed at others, but it has never matched how those days felt, when no matter how bad today was, tomorrow was gonna be so much better. 4/
It isn’t just nostalgia, or the fact that I was still a kid then. And I know I’m viewing all this through a cis white American male lens. But I do think things honestly were better in general for most people than they are today. And that is profoundly sad. 5/5

Yesterday, my daughter asked me what the 90s were like. I didn’t know how to describe them.
Today, I showed her those commercials and said, “This. This is what the 90s were like.” And it’s true. I know I was a kid, so rose-colored glasses and all that, but there was an optimism we now lack. 2/
The stuff in those commercials seemed futuristic, but also genuinely achievable in our lifetimes. And we were so sure those tech advances would be forces for good, with any downsides being minor or negligible. Same with the internet, not yet destroyed by capitalism run amok. 3/
listen, I'm not a dad, but if I was one, and one of these fucking creeps tried to inspect my athlete-daughter's genitals, I would beat them to death with a hammer, and sleep just fine forever
…Are you kidding me? This country's treatment of voice actors is fucking abysmal. Aqua Teen Hunger Force essentially built Adult Swim, & if there were any justice, Carey Means shouldn't have to work another day in his life. Between this & Andy Merrill's trouble, i just… what the fuck. What the fuck.
In bad news, with disability education oversight being moved to the Department of Health and Human Services from the Department of Education, that means Robert F. Kennedy Jr. will have power over disability policy positions. New from me at @motherjones.comwww.motherjones.com/politics/202...
“What do you rebuild in its place?” is so bizarre. Deciding what to build in its place is a POLITICAL OPPORTUNITY, not a vexed problem. Build it back the way it was, but better. Make it the home of your new Agency for Retribution and Reconstruction. Hell, put up a daycare center. PICK A THING.
I don't like Newsom to begin with, but this disqualifies him all by itself. Anyone who leave a brick standing that Trump put in place is just inviting the next authoritarian to do the same thing.
Destruction in this case is cleansing.
communities are coming to Bluesky this year.
today, Bluesky is one big space. communities will be smaller spaces inside that where you can go deeper and hang out with people who care about the same stuff.
A warning to anyone planning to attend a World Cup game:
Do not attend a World Cup game in the United States. Even American citizens are at risk of being kidnapped, beaten, murdered, or placed in an inhumane detention facility.
A football (soccer) game is not worth the risk.
STAY HOME STAY SAFE
Hegseth is the worst of the school bullies we have ever faced. Contemptible, cruel, psychotic, sadistic, racist, misogynist, misanthrope. The one we were told would never prosper, because karma would catch up to him eventually. The one we couldn’t fight back against due to “zero-tolerance” rules.
Periodic reminder that Teapot Dome, the worst scandal in American history prior to Watergate, involved $9 million changing hands. That’s adjusted for inflation.
This story by itself is 55500% bigger than Teapot Dome.
That’s not a typo.
Trump says he's interested in govt taking equity stakes in the giant AI companies like OpenAI or Anthropic: "There's something very interesting about it, where it almost becomes a partnership. The American people can benefit from the success of AI, and by doing that, they're gonna like it better."
Every single thing this US thug regime has done makes perfect sense when you view it through the lens of how organized crime operates. Every. Single. Thing.
Please do not repost this. We have enough problems without letting our enemies know that 105,000 Trumpsters will be at the UFC at the White House on Sunday, June 14, 2026.
A day after The Late Show ended, Colbert hosted an episode of public access program Only In Monroe, reviving his 11-year-old gag.
How bad is CBS/Paramount taking it? They issued copyright complaints for a show they don't own. 🤣
CBS would hate it if you watch here: www.youtube.com/watch?v=7DlF...
