Quite remarkable how quickly #Mbappé, one of the richest athletes in the world, kowtowed to the Chinese regime after two of his manifold sponsors took offense with him referring to Mao as "some Chinese dictator" (which Mao was). Remember this next time Mbappé is presented as a civic role model.

And to avoid misunderstandings: I'm fine with Mbappé, and other athletes, getting rich off their physical qualities. It's their job, after all. I'm just uncomfortable with the widely shared idea that they are also morally outstanding citizens we should look up to because of their civic spirit.

Seit fünf Jahren steckt Serbiens Beitrittsverfahren fest. Um es wieder in Gang zu bringen, wird die neue Regierung in Belgrad rasch lange verschleppte Reformen umsetzen, gegen Kriegsverbrecher vorgehen und vor allem das Verhältnis zum Kosovo normalisieren müssen.

Nothing will prevent pundits from meaningless attempts at trendspotting ("Is the populist wave receding?"). Still, there might be one fairly uncontroversial lesson: organizing/showing presence on the ground can really make a difference.

Isn't it interesting that in Hungary and Serbia, two completely opposite models of organising a political movement managed to beat autocratic leaders? In Hungary, the Tisza Party was entirely designed around a prominent leader. In Serbia, the Student Movement (for good reasons) refused to have one.

I'm wondering what all those political analysts and consultants who, after Péter Magyar's victory in Hungary concluded that an opposition movement needs a charismatic leader to succeed, are making of the Serbian case (I'm sure they're making something billable of it. They have clients, after all.)
