NEW: Scripture tells us, “If anyone says, ‘I love God,’ but hates his brother, he is a liar.” Love is a verb. Pope Leo XIV said this morning that love for God has to overflow into love for our neighbor. Nine days before the election, love asks more of us than a feeling. It demands that we act.

He must be an undying embarrassment to the Kennedy family. He sure as heck is to the rest of us.

My heart is heavy. Walter Koenig, our Ensign Pavel Chekov, passed away early today. Walter and I met on the bridge of the Enterprise in the 1960s, and we stayed friends for nearly six decades. When Brad and I married in 2008, Walter stood beside us as our best man.

NEW: Just as God raised up John Paul II to face down the Kremlin, God has raised up an American pope to face MAGA authoritarianism. In Newark in 1995, with Bill Clinton at his side, John Paul told the country to remain “a haven for generation after generation of new arrivals.”

May the intercession of Saints Francis and Clare of Assisi bring us closer to Christ, closer to the Church, and closer to each other. May their prayers comfort us, empower us, and protect us as we strive to live the Gospel, share God’s love, and rebuild our Church. Amen. assisiproject.com/prayer

Happy #MoleDay! Right now, it's 6:02am on 23 October, aka 6:02 10/23 in the US date format. Chemists out there will notice this date and time resembles Avogadro's number, a basic measuring unit, which defines the number of particles in one mole of substance.

Republican lawmakers are incensed about Trump's dismissal of Ukraine — and powerless to stop him. That frustration hit a new peak on Monday as they sought to address Trump’s decision to purchase Russian diesel, waive sanctions on Moscow, and potentially stop sharing intelligence with Ukraine.
