Surely not the NYT once again flipping through its Rolodex of influential and powerful people for someone to interview about politics and then pretending they're just some guy.

Man, RIP. I love Checkov of course, but Koenig will always be the evil psychic cop from Babylon 5 to me.

Jesse Thorn@jessethorn.bsky.social

My pal Danielle Koenig shared that her father Walter Koenig passed away last night at age 90. A performer whose kindness and warmth shone through the screen. He will be well remembered.

if voting didn't matter they wouldn't be working so hard to stop you

The long-serving strongman leader of Serbia, Aleksandar Vucic, has conceded defeat in an election that pitted him and his right-wing party against a diverse student-led opposition movement that spent two years protesting his government.

Fuck yeah, it's the least impressive film criticism gambit ever: I wanted to see a different movie about something else, therefore this movie is bad.

There's a type of online person, especially if they're some type of creator, who is entirely brainbroke by metrics. I so frequently hear the podcasters I listen to about the online right go "people don't understand how huge this guy is, he's got 300,000 subscribers!" That's nothing!

Apples are just astonishingly better than when I was a kid and what you'd get at the grocery store were either mushy red delicious or lemon-sour granny smiths.

Social media loves talking about how everything is getting worse. But what’s something that you’ve seen get _better_ in your lifetime?

these are automated processes. they're not little guys or whatever. this is putting a brick on the gas pedal of a semi and hoping it drives somewhere and comes back with a trailer full of gold bullion for you. this is criminal behavior

Ah, Rob. All those pains to come across as conservative and down home as possible and Sarah still thinks you're a godless communist who's going to trans the kids and give her job to an *ethnic slur*.

Truly remarkable to be the sort of moron who's like "sure I'll be interviewed by the Times" only for your answer to every question be a look of dawning confusion as you realize you don't know fuck about shit.

brent 🌹🗽@therealbrent.bsky.social

Main takeaway from the NYT Iowa focus group is that none of these voters really know what’s going on and they barely know anything about the candidates running in either statewide election lmao

I've had a strong suspicion for several years now that slaughterhouse and rendering plant owners are a quiet driver behind a lot of MAHA shit considering how aggressively unpopular cuts and byproducts like tallow and bone broth have been pushed in those spaces.

FactPost@factpostnews.bsky.social

RFK Jr. suggests Americans can more easily afford groceries if they start eating liver instead of beef: "Most of the cheap cuts of meat are very inexpensive. You can buy liver or the cheap cuts."

Pete has to have been really confused when he looked at this globe and didn't see Israel on it.

Alt National Park Service@altnps.bsky.social

This is sad. General Dwight D. Eisenhower’s historic World War II globe was broken when Pete Hegseth’s team dropped it while trying to move it into his office.

One of the things I think people are missing about You Can See Everything is that Holmes' persona was shaped by an environment (Silicon Valley VC culture) that rewards the performance of neurodivergence. Being a Big Weirdo was to her advantage until it wasn't.

Was going to continue tackling this month's scary movie classic watchlist with The Omen tonight, but Amazon shoved Hundreds of Beavers in my face, and it was honestly probably for the best because I had a blast.

Boo!-per Lund@cooperlund.online

The ability to handle ambiguity in life and art is a sign of maturity and I am so bothered by how many people don’t seem to trust other people to be able to process these things. It’s the same impulse that leads to yelling at headlines for not explicitly saying something is bad.

I am everyday so glad that neither of my parents ever got hooked on social media. I goof on the dumb procedurals she watches all day, but that's so much better than my mom scrolling Facebook and turning her brain to soup.

The home water treatment stuff makes my head hurt. All sounds like bullshit. I just want to give someone a thousand bucks to make the water palatable enough that my mother will stop spending hundreds of dollars a month on ice and bottled water

Yes. The conservative scheme for education is a three-way split: high-priced academies for the children of the wealthy, religious instruction to brainwash the middle class, and a rump of prison-like public schools to discipline the lower class into obedience.

jamelle@jamellebouie.net

the other thing is that conservatives resolutely do not see the purpose of education as providing social mobility but as reifying and deepening existing inequalities of status. they are as hostile to low income students getting admission to elite institutions as they are black ones.

My cue to remind everyone that one of the very first things Trump did in his first term was to roll back fiduciary rules for investment advisers.

ProPublica@propublica.org

President Trump wants to soften one of the strongest legal protections American workers have: the right to hold an employer accountable when retirement savings are mishandled. Watch @amoghvaz.bsky.social break it down 👇

The US and the West welcomed Russia into the community of nations after the Cold War. Investment poured in. The G7 turned into G8. The idea that Poland, Estonia, etc. forming their own foreign relations was so unfair to Moscow that Russia is entitled to murder Ukrainians 20 years later is insane.

Aaron Rupar@atrupar.com

Ron Johnson blames US for Putin invading Ukraine: "The way we treated Russia after we won the Cold War, how we pushed them. I'm not defending Putin, but we said we were not gonna move NATO one inch to the east. We brought it right to their doorstep basically. What did we think Putin was gonna do?"

Women like Guilfoyle leave me more convinced everyday that the gender gap when it comes to various of sexual misconducts is largely a result of culture making it far less likely for women to a.) be in a position to commit them and b. get away with them.

stop wishing society looked like the cartoon you enjoyed when you were eight years old and take stock of what actually fucking exists and what you can reasonably do with it

I dug Digger and am enjoying my dual projects of catching up on horror classics and watching the le Carre cinematic adaptations (despite the first two le Carre's being underwhelming).

Letterboxd@letterboxd.social

Happy #LetterboxdFriday! Time to post your #LastFourWatched 👀

Been shopping for a water softener/reverse osmosis system for the new house and was really put off by one of the more highly recommended company's pitch video essentially opening with "hey man, shitty water is just the price we all happily pay because Iowa loves corn!"

Yep. I think the two most important invisible things that happened in the 00s was that America's ruling class got exposed to the Gulf monarchies by the war on terror on the one hand and China by the quest for markets on the other, and came away saying "I want that for me."

mtsw@mtsw.bsky.social

The Gulf Monarchies — a small group of royals on top, a group of citizens underneath them who enjoy rights as long as they're loyal to the regime and then below them a huge group of quasi-slave guest workers with no rights at all — is considered a model for what conservatives want for the USA

Genuinely had this experience in college when at lunch with my friend group one of them referred to the paintball outing they'd all gone on that I wasn't invited to.

It’s hard to think of a better definition of a traitor to the West than someone who deliberately sabotages a European democracy’s military operation against a barbaric Russian invasion.

Just saw an anti-Turek ad by an alleged marine who pronounced it "Marine Corpse", and man, if you did a full tour with the Marines without learning how to pronounce corps, I think you might have bigger problems than a democratic candidate being insufficiently deferent to you.

I consider No Country for Old Men to be a more or less perfect movie, but for the extremely obviously 2007 vintage Jack Links jerky display that is always in the shots of Anton Chigur during the gas station scene. The movie takes place in the early 80s and otherwise does great at recreating the era.

Hard to exaggerate what a total failure MBS has been for Saudi Arabia. He's basically spent a crucial decade blowing historic amounts of money on failed megaprojects and cultural plays, and left the country as dependent on oil production as it ever was.

Carl Quintanilla@carlquintanilla.bsky.social

“.. the repeated failure of Saudi air defences to protect airports risks doing longer-term damage to the kingdom’s image and its ability to attract foreign investors and tourists, both vital for the success of the crown prince’s economic plans.” @financialtimes.com www.ft.com/content/bc73...

This is the way.

Dante Atkins@danteatkins.bsky.social

It's not hard. Both Yglesias moderates and Khanna leftists give MAGA politicians legitimacy because they want MAGA's base. Ossoff simply does not give a shit about the MAGA base, which allows him to speak with fierce clarity about MAGA politicians. He is willing to bet on an anti-MAGA majority.
