Y'days post: The Decline of Knowledge Based Policy and the Economics Nobel mainlymacro.blogspot.com/2026/10/the-... The problem was not neoliberal ideas (evidence based policy thrived under Blair/Brown) but that the Tory party adopted neoliberalism as the only set of ideas they would ever need.

Funny and plausible. And educational.

It’s a strange strong nominal economic growth environment: -basically no free cash flow/shareholder returns from the biggest, most profitable companies leading the boom -not much money being returned to investors in PE funds -record-low housing transaction levels

This fits with my memory of Graham. I’m of course sorry for anyone close to him who lost a loved one, but I’m not understandanding the political nostalgia for him, as if he’d been some sort of principled stander-up to Trump.

Phillips OBrien@phillipspobrien.bsky.social

Stop the Lindsey Graham rewriting-history fest. If he had been alive, and Trump had waived sanctions on Russia, he would have done what he had always done for the last 10 years--back Trump to the hilt, without reservations. Ukraine meant nothing to him compared to Trump.

“Two states are paying a great price for trusting in the USA—Saudi Arabia and Ukraine (and through Ukraine, Europe as well). Both states are getting bombarded by their enemies and are either being abandoned by the USA or, in the case of Ukraine, are seeing these attacks being supported by the USA”

Midweek update. This is the week when trusting the USA was shown to be a catastrophe. The second part has a detailed primer on the Starlink/Starshield sabotage of Ukraine. This is US being a fully fledged Putin ally and will cause many Ukrainian deaths phillipspobrien.substack.com/p/midweek-up...

Can the Fed get away with not hiking later this month? Only way it can do that is with a hawkish press con, but even that'll be tricky. Markets price 8 bps in hikes for the October meeting, so not hiking will be a dovish surprise no matter what is said... robinjbrooks.substack.com/p/how-will-m...

No doubt this has occurred to other bystanders as well, but it would seem that a handful of billionaires dropping $150 million into a single state's election in an attempt to defeat a wealth-tax initiative just about makes the entire case for a wealth-tax initiative.

By my reading, the takeaway for investors is that, because the oil curve is so strongly backwardated, a carefully constructed long commodity-futures position that captures the roll yield may still be attractive, even though the market expects spot oil prices to fall sharply by next spring.

The pending oil deal involves Russian Lukoil international assets (now sanctioned by the US) that would be acquired at a big discount by a Trump campaign donor, a UAE-based investor in Trump/Witkoff family crypto company, and Kushner/Ivanka's Qatari-based real estate partners.

WASHINGTON (AP) - Trump says Europe has agreed to release diesel reserves 'immediately' as fuel prices hover near record highs. @apnews.com

The oil market is in steep backwardation. Expectations alone are not the sole factor shaping the futures curve, but backwardation is consistent with the market view, “This is an acute crisis, but we do not currently price it as a permanent one.”

this is a real problem, but cartel is a bad solution, for very obvious reasons. (it is the main solution we currently use in Western economies, which explains why our economies have turned extractive rentier, 'cuz there's no limiting principle to cartel.) can i interest you in a better solution?

so long-term the way you'd expect this to go is that the players would slow down capex such that they can make money, but if you do that while your competitor is running at a loss you're roadkill, so everyone needs to slow down at once, which is why you need the cartel.

It's an insane policy. It's har to even grasp how it could ever have been proposed or adopted.

@robin-j-brooks.bsky.social: Only the BoJ can save the Yen in the sense that only higher yields will sustainably stabilize the currency. But - of course - higher yields mean a higher interest bill for the government, so they can’t be allowed to rise robinjbrooks.substack.com/p/have-japan...

If you want to be glass-half-full on Japan's interventions, they've kept $/JPY from going above 160. But the glass-half-empty take is that, as soon as global yields rise, it's testing 160 again. Only much higher Japanese interest rates can save the Yen... robinjbrooks.substack.com/p/have-japan...

It would also be bad for Americans. US gasoline and jet fuel production would also decline, and import prices would rise.
