Hi. I teach and research at UC Berkeley on AI and its relation to literature, culture, and politics. These are my recent essays about the topic, covering ideology, image/text relations, meaning, authorship, agency, and other aspects of cultural AI.

What happens to writing when machines can write? How are novelists, poets, and screenwriters responding to AI, and what does it mean for creativity, authorship, and the future of storytelling? Join us on November 18 at UC Berkeley with @hannesbajohr.de, Alex-Saum Pascual, and Nick Nardini.

Happy birthday, Judith Shklar! 2013 übersetzte ich "Der Liberalismus der Furcht" und seitdem insgesamt sieben Bücher von ihr. Und ein paar gibt es noch. (Die Kacheln sind vom Verlag, der auf Bluesky nicht vertreten ist.)

The old line that analytic philosophy is answering questions that come naturally to toddlers via methods that come naturally to lawyers remains undefeated.

noam@noamchompers.bsky.social

It is sorta a funny thing about philosophy that the questions are inherently fascinating and exciting—there’s a reason people wind up talking about this stuff in dorm rooms—and the best methods we have for investigating them involve being as tedious and pedantic and boring as possible

So we are back at the "open letter" stage? As I wrote two years ago, the "AI risk" is a red herring; we should rather be worried by the privatization of language and fear a "synthetic public sphere" that comes with it. For whoever controls language models controls politics.

Hannes Bajohr@hannesbajohr.de

"Whoever controls language models controls politics" (2024) is about LLMs being inherently ideological, the change of the public sphere once speech is automated, and the need for communization of AI.

We have the digital and physical galley available for those who’d like to review First Encounters with AI: Writers on Writing. Let me know, and I’ll connect you to the press editor

Nina Beguš@ninabegus.bsky.social

The book is 50% off until the end of June: doi.org/10.3998/mpub... Also available under open access and free on Kindle! Another book in this framework, also on sale, is coming out in the fall: essays by writers reflecting on the entry of AI into reading & writing: press.umich.edu/Books/F/Firs...

In it, the authors discuss AI as a fourth type of retention in the sense Stiegler used it: As the externalization not of actual but rather potential memory.

Second that! Just taught it and it’s excellent.

Bound to be one of the most important critical and theoretical books on the meaning of neural networks (and not just for vision). Congratulations to Leonardo Impett and Fabian Offert @zentralwerkstatt.org! Freshly published from meson press and University of Minnesota Press. @uminnpress.bsky.social
