The insecure buggy stuff is already on the hardware! Replacing it with insecure buggy stuff in our control is a marked improvement!

Jason Koebler@jasonkoebler.bsky.social

The AI 'Reverse Engineer Anything' craze is going to further sloppify the real world & put insecure buggy stuff on all sorts of hardware. It is also going to liberate a bunch of internet of shit devices that have been needlessly bricked by their manufacturers www.404media.co/reverse-engi...

huh, are there any other distros that ship this kind of dual boot installer? this seems quite novel but I feel like it shouldn't be? the only thing that comes to mind is Asahi

yeag, the link isn't some invite or anything but it's butterfly.so/pond/install

The thing that worries me most lately is that many people who know that “fascism is bad, actually” have also convinced themselves that AI tools must be eschewed as fake or impure. In a self-reinforcing loop, there is relatively little AI tooling and infra by “fascism is bad” folks.

For a long time I've wanted a sense of how trump has or hasn't interacted with chatbots (we know he posts a lot of slop sure). And this TIME anecdote about Grok arguably leading Trump into war is just extremely bracing

I feel like I'm being fairly restrained in what I'm imagining here, but these are the kinds of tasks that have costs trending to zero in this insane new world we live in. I would bet that GLM 5.3 Flash would body any of the above tasks for less than the price of a decent sandwich worth of inference.

I'd like to see less time spent arguing with people on Bluesky about this and more time spent demonstrating that we can use LLMs, especially open weight ones, in prosocial ways. Because there's a hell of a reputation to kick before people will really start believing that it's possible.

Or maybe a service you were paying for got acquired by another company, and the product is getting worse but they're not making it easy for you to get your data out and import it somewhere else.

So what can this do for you and your community? A lot of things, and I think that's something we need to get better at communicating and writing about generally.

Everyone copes with change in different ways, and I try not to fault anyone for burying their head in the sand about it. But we are in the fucking thick of it now, folks.

You could blow up OpenAI and Anthropic tomorrow, but there's no dependency on them anymore. The weights are out there. Anyone with a rack of GPUs will sell you inference for pennies on the dollar, in whatever jurisdiction you like.

I made the decision very early on that there was no way I'd be using proprietary models for the same reasons I avoid as much proprietary software as possible in other aspects of my life: I don't want to form a dependency on something that can be changed or revoked without my input.

It wasn't until April of this year that I started taking the way the models were progressing seriously; in the last 3-6 months, we've reached a point where not only are open weights good enough for the vast majority of generalized development tasks - they're getting cheaper to run. Fast.

And if you aren't paying attention, this probably reads like advocating to pay Anthropic and OpenAI to be able to maintain software for the rest of our lives. But open weight models are just unbelievably good now! Like, you actually wouldn't believe it unless you saw it yourself.
