This reminded me of seeing Loud Objects at Blip Festival 2007, soldering on top of a projector in the midst of the crowd. Not especially similar, but the closest I've witnessed. youtu.be/HYU4-OF2ewQ

What I listened to today: "Nagra SN demo with Modern Sounds Pluto v3", troy mckaskle A musician records every meticulous step of making a short 40-second retro-synth motif, running a modern aleatoric unit into a 1970s vintage portable tape unit to saturate the waves www.youtube.com/watch?v=OX6a...

October 21 1998, Space Station Silicon Valley debuted on the N64 in the Americas! Even though developer, DMA Design, was already working on Grand Theft Auto and Body Harvest, creative director Gary Penn avoided open world for this game partly because "they are a bugger to make"!

One team I worked on, our manager got fed up with us arguing tabs vs spaces, so he declared we would use neither: all lines would be left aligned. I thought he hadn't thought it through and this would lead to a ton of trouble, but it worked out great and there were no unindented consequences.

Here's some Music from the unreleased, and lost, 'Jest' game for the N64. Found today on an old backup CD by the original author/composer, Paul Tonge. He has very kindly allowed me to share his work here, for the first time. This is titled Hell - I believe this was one of the levels in the game.

I have fond memories of the 25th Anniversary Symphony concert in LA, particularly Koji Kondo's piano solo. (I hope this old video embeds ok, saved during its brief time on YouTube. I think it's the only one from the LA show, there are more from London. Gets loud with cheering, rotates to landscape.)

Yay. Managed to get a ticket for the Zelda 40th concert! 🤩🎟️

Good chance to show off my assorted Ultra 64 swag, happy birthday N64!

September 29 1996, The Nintendo 64 debuted in the Americas WITH Super Mario 64 and Pilot Wings 64! The N64 was originally to be called the Ultra 64, then changed. Konami owned the trademark for "Ultra Games", ironically because Nintendo limited 3rd party NES game production years before! 🕹️1/2🕹️

5.1 Still not happening? Some things are just not meant to happen. (From the end of a 200 line troubleshooting guide in the readme.txt on an Enhanced CD)

I thought of a funny game mechanic interaction, which motivated me to pull together a rough entry for the GMTK Game Jam. It made the top quartile on Creativity and Enjoyment ratings, not too shabby. I'm mostly glad to break my game jam drought since Speleomorph in 2022! hcs64.itch.io/the-counts-a...

July 24 1998, Super B-Daman Battle Phoenix 64 debuted on the N64 in Japan! The mechanics are similar to a compilation of light gun/party/mini games played third person with characters based on a series of Japanese toy robots that shoot marbles from their torso! READY B FIGHT!

Rewrite Machine CD-ROM, January 1998 This is an artifact of the Nintendo Power system of convenience store kiosks, for selling Super Famicom (later Game Boy) games on rewritable cartridges. This disc would presumably have loaded kiosks with 104 SFC games in early 1998. Info: redump.info/disc/131221

Really cool to see a new CD+EG disc! I was glad to be able to help out with some debugging, looking forward to testing the production run on my Sega Saturn (currently delayed somewhere in USPS).

Oh wow… a new CD+G. Actually, CD+EG. This must have been a real labour of love. Oh, BTW, apparently PC-FX should also be able to play this (not listed in article). hackaday.com/2026/06/25/n...

Game idea: Fitting together puzzle pieces, but some are missing. You're able to create your own pieces, to fill in spaces where you think you need things to connect. The trick is you need to make a system of pieces that only fits together where it makes sense.

Game idea: Metroidvania with no fixed traversal powers. Instead you scan obstacles in the world as you encounter them. Then, when you have observed enough that a clear pattern is established, you can request to synthesize a spell that gives you a new ability. #gamedesign

More programming-y: There could be a semi-guided wizard/expert system that helps the player put moves together that meet all the requirements. Or the player might get specific spells for each instance, and then there's a guided process for factoring out common geometry, to free up spell slots.

Could vary depending on how you put the problem. You might request a solution for a single situation and get something that only works in that exact instance. On the other hand, there might not be any solution if you try to gather together too many dissimilar things.

Years ago I ripped all Quest 64's music data and applied modern soundfonts (my goal was to upload a full "orchestral" OST to youtube). I decided to add little jokey animations to each track, but I got carried away, which doomed the project to never be completed. Here's the battle theme.

Game idea: Create programs to solve puzzles, written in a language heavy on English keywords. But: Each solution must take the form of a rhyme. Discover new rhyming schemes! Create new words to suit!

Game idea: Magic lesson warns you to only cast a spell in a wide open area outside, never indoors. The spell has chaotic interactions with nearby objects, usually fatal, as if missing initialization or clobbering memory. Exploit this at carefully chosen locations to effect prodigious workings.
