The Trump administration gutted the decades-long Women's Health Initiative at NIH in April 2025. Funding for gender and women's research dropped over a third. Grants led by women were hit hardest. Nearly $3bn in cuts

Olga Nesterova@onestpress.onestnetwork.com

Trump, next to Melania Trump, signed the Executive Order that establishes a White House Women’s Health Task Force and a new Women’s Health Division within the National Institutes of Health to accelerate scientific discoveries to improve women’s health outcomes.

Yesss. The judge's order prohibits the U.S. Forest Service move to Utah, along with the closures of 9 of its regional offices and 23 research facilities until the conclusion of our trial. Keep on fighting.

BREAKING: Judge grants our request to temporarily halt USDA office closures, including those in the U.S. Forest Service, saying the agency has “almost certainly been violating” Congressional restrictions on use of funds. wtop.com/maryland/202...

"This means the new definition does not involve emergency managers coordinating with other government agencies, nonprofits such as the Red Cross, or private entities—including utility companies. The new definition also seems to preclude providing funding for disaster mitigation or recovery."

“If, as the memo implies, [FEMA administrator Cameron Hamilton] is expecting FEMA to start operating under this definition, then everything at FEMA would change,” says @samlmontano.bsky.social. eos.org/research-and...

This is where I camped out during most of my lunch breaks when I was on the month-long murder trial jury. A lovely beacon of joy. And the chairs are big and comfy.

If you need a brief and happy reprieve from normal life (or at least the harder side of it), come sit in the Marriage Bureau at D.C. Superior Court for a few minutes. Plenty of happiness, despite the bureaucracy. (And sometimes because of it; the workers here are very pleasant!)

So guess who wasn’t, indeed, having a “such a long reaction” to the vax and actually just had covid? 🫠 Pretty bananas to catch it and begin showing symptoms at literally the exact same time I always get the vax reaction (~8 hours after). Messed up if you ask me! Anyway, get your shots, pals.

Heather Goss@heathermg.bsky.social

I’ve had such a long reaction to Thursday’s vax that I’m wondering if I didn’t just catch covid last week HOWEVER I activated a free month of Prime and caught up on the last Good Omens ep, S3 of Leverage: Redemption, and am halfway through Project Hail Mary so it’s been an A+ media weekend.

The real dagger is that I needed to be with my mom today during a heart procedure, and had to frantically scramble for help. So today @volcanojw.bsky.social & @samer.is traded off being there the entire time with my mom at the hospital and if I were a cryer I’d be blubbering all over right now ❤️😭❤️

NASA has ignored recommended funding levels for planetary research & analysis for 15 years, according to a new investigative report by Mark Sykes (@coop.planetary-research.org). And for FY2025, it hasn’t even spent 50% of what it budgeted for R&A. 🧪🪐🔭 eos.org/research-and...

Beloved thief Parker saying “I honestly don't even know how to be a criminal anymore. There's no way to actually break the law,” in the Sam Bankman-Fried / Verizon throttling firefighters data mash-up ep was perfect. Sometimes you just need to watch earnest corporate vigilantes do their thing.

No complaints about increasing my access to donuts, but it feels like a wild business choice to open a bagel place 50ft from Buffalo and Bergen, and across the street from Cracked Eggery. (And I love breakfast spots but I love less a bunch of storefronts that all close at 3pm...)

The Facial Expressions of Tethys by artist Julius von Bismarck. A suspended high-sea buoy that moves in real time. Sensors on a twin buoy out in the Atlantic Ocean send live satellite data to motors inside the museum. This makes the indoor buoy copy the exact, real-time movements of the ocean waves.

You could find your way along the Nova Scotia coast blind, just by timing the blinks. Every lighthouse flashes on its own rhythm, a set interval and colour no neighbour repeats. Sambro Island off Halifax has burned since 1758, the oldest working lighthouse in North America. #lighthouse #NovaScotia

More urban hiking this weekend: I metroed up to Bethesda and walked the entire Capital Crescent Trail down to Georgetown, then took Rock Creek Trail back up to my neighborhood, with a quick detour through Klingle Valley Trail and a shortcut through Tregaron Conservancy.

Resurrecting this because I just finished Slow Gods by Claire North and really loved it. I also read Some Desperate Glory based on a few recs in this thread and it was good! Plot is A+; I’d call it firmly YA so YMMV on it.

Forgot to update that I finished it, whew. Now I am craving some good sci-fi to download before my flight tomorrow. Any recommendations? I tend to prefer spacefaring adventures / operas (Becky Chambers; Alastair Reynolds) to dystopian / noir.

In a waiting room overhearing some strangers chit-chat: Older woman to the ~6yo girl sitting next to her: “…in an Uber. Do you know what an Uber is?” “No” “It’s like a taxi. Do you know what a taxi is?” “No?” Dad: “It’s like a Waymo but with a driver.” “Oh!!” 💀💀💀

I hiked to Maryland! Nice little 12 mile walk all the way up Western Ridge to the Border Bridge and back down Valley Trail. 10/10 except the air is WET, woof. I earned this giant fountain Diet Coke I detoured to get before I made it home. Probably earned a couple Advil as well lol.

Walked to Wegman’s today; it’s out of my way but neighbor gave me a gift card for feeding her cats. Tried to take a new way to Wisconsin Ave because there’s a secret little path at the dead end of Springland Lane. At least, there used to be.
