the funniest thing about bluesky is that eventually, you're going to run into somebody who claims that they know all 26 letters of the alphabet. i'm sorry to burst your bubble, but: no. you don't. nobody does

Lean into this push. Please. Cling to hope for a much, much better world. Believe that you deserve more, that you don’t deserve this stress.

This is a book about portrayals of librarians in video games, which heavily used our video game research library for reference, and then the final work was donated to our library. An ouroboros of video game library.

dollar and Neanderthal are half-cognates. Thal means a dale or valley. Neanderthal/Neander Valley is where the first remains were found. a popular form of coinage in the 1500s was from Joachimsthal, and were called Joachimsthalers or thalers for short, which became dollars in English.

What's your favourite origin/root of a word? (in any language) I love etymology so much. It's like history & conspiracy theories combined. Our language has secret messages & lizard DNA baked into it. Like how 'gargoyle' comes from gargle / gurgle, because of the water spewing out their mouths

this is so important it needed its own clip actually

in this episode cmrn reads a letter tolkien wrote where he talks about how lore is beside the point of storytelling and he doesn't understand all the people asking him fine-grained questions about calendars and stuff and This Is The Truth They Have Hidden From You

FanExpo: still a huge pain in the ass! Registration is unnecessarily convoluted and obviously used for collecting marketing data. Show floor is too crowded. They cram two show's worth of stalls AND the main stage on one half of the exhibit hall. Even the celebrity guests were complaining about noise

Positive note: the people. Lots of great cosplay, cool to see fame-os like David Silverman, Paul Dini and a bunch of Star Trek folks. Even when I don't really feel "there" it's nice to be able to say I was there, you know?

side note: IPL use has obliterated my body hair mostly, which means I am no longer great at regulating my temperature! got very cold in the air conditioner, even when wearing pants. need to put some meat on my bones, gotta eat more

No food stalls on the exhibit floor either! Only one food vendor as far as I can tell, with bland convention food (warmed hot dogs, hamburgers, etc). Line took about 10 minutes. Also, no "quiet space" to chill out in unlike PAX, Anime Expo, something I really could've used. Headphones helped a bit.

did you know? some humans are born without souls. the unensouled exhibit what's called a "cringe reflex" which causes them to "cringe" in response to stuff that's cute and good. the cure varies by individual. a popular method for attracting souls is to wear pretty dresses with lots of bows and stuff

I didn't really follow the World Cup (nothing against it, just had other stuff going on), but I am very happy to see that the guy who was on all the advertising lost

If you hide who you really are because you’re scared of being hurt, please don’t blame yourself🏳️‍⚧️🏳️‍🌈 Your caution shows how precious and beautiful your heart is. Chiitan will continue speaking out until the day comes when everyone can live freely without fear.

Finished up Deltarune ch. 5!... uh, a little over a week ago. I've basically been thinking about it since. I don't think 5 is the most fun I've had playing it, but: I think the shape of the story is really starting to take form in my head, and I'm very impressed by what's going on

I think there's a lot to chew on with lore, etc and it's a story that rewards close reading. But I am frustrated by how most of the discussion is getting obsessed with details and missing the emotional core. There's real themes + characters + subtext being developed! In a video's game!

Saw TADC last act on Thursday and can't stop thinking about it. It's deeply personal but remarkably resonant. I think many people who have been terminally online will be able to relate heavily to it.

I don't want to get too much into spoilers, but I think a central theme is that being too drenched in irony as a coping strategy can be deeply poisonous, that it can make you lose track of who you really are. Centering authenticity and earnestness can help bring you back.

Really cool Misericorde write-up on the A.V. Club! Tangent, but this does make me think that if Hedwig found out how Chaucer had besmirched St. Valentine's feast day she'd get mad enough to go back in time to stop him writing any of that

For Love Week at The A.V. Club, I got a chance to write about the excellent VN Misericorde and how its queer hot mess disaster protagonist struggles against her own deeply entrenched religious beliefs.

One thing that I'm really appreciating from Earthbound is the encounter design. Threads the needle between being a slog and being a cakewalk. Each encounter makes me feel like I've got to make some interesting decisions, which I think is what you hope for in RPG design
