Current polls for the German federal elections. I think today's a good reminder that right-wing politics tend to be sticky. Cases in point: Poland, Hungary, Serbia, Brazil, Argentina, U.S., …

I love how people are now telling unknowing users to let other backdoor-able software run on their servers to figure out whether a backdoor-able software is running on the server. This "helpful prompt" is just unhinged.

Figuring out if your PHP is vulnerable is literally a one-line command — `php --version`. And updating is probably just two lines, depending on the OS.

Critical Security Update for Zettlr. (+ fixes a big annoyance)

Zettlr@zettlr.com

+++ NEW RELEASE +++ We are pleased to announce Zettlr 4.9.0. Two crucial changes: 1. No more annoying "Update failed" errors! 2. Updates Electron, so drops support for old macOS and Ubuntu, but also fixes a critical security vulnerability. Update highly recommended! github.com/Zettlr/Zettl...

One deck up a group of just-eighteenths growls Wonderwall. It is, indeed, a fever dream. (And a fascinating reminder that there is. World both outside of academia and pure fascism, which is honestly very good.)

Who could’ve thought that the first discipline to take a collective stance in the robot wars would be maths? MATHS!

This post is unavailable.

Don’t have time to check the appendix yesterday, but I already suspected something like this. In short, my suspicion that they just had the most favorable data and measurements they could have gains more evidence.

Lauren Donohue@stolenbytigers.bsky.social

I dug into the methods and appendix, and hoo boy is that title "AI Article Reviews Dominate Human Peer Reviews at Their Best" deceptively broad. The overwhelming number of submissions were quantitative and statistical, only 9 were formal mathematical, and 11 were qualitative.

Linux. What started as a nerd-only hobby is now run by more and more non-techy people and they’re doing pretty well on it.

Social media loves talking about how everything is getting worse. But what’s something that you’ve seen get _better_ in your lifetime?

Hendrik Erz, PhD reposted

This (excellent point) is even worse bc of the set-up that looks at a scenario where both peer reviewers & AIs don't _evaluate_ the paper but seek to improve it. I.e. it's measuring not peer review but peer feedback. And for that, editors' assessment is even less meaningful.

Robert (Bob) Kubinec@rmkubinec.bsky.social

A serious weakness in this paper by King and Worthington: The judges for the AI peer reviews are *not* experts in the field. They are former journal editors but no claim is made to substantive expertise in the reviewed papers. AI-generated reviews sound good *if you don't know the substance well.*

Human-written vulnerabilities are a finite resource we’re burning through like fossil fuels

A corollary of the King & Worthington peer review paper is that “by every measure we could construct” (e.g. fidelity of recall, ability to summarize, etc) AIs are better than people at *reading* papers, too. This suits the very large class of academics who don’t really want their papers to be read.

I have worked for the German center for federal political education for two years as a student, and believe it is of utmost importance. However, formally under the interior ministry, they have been forced to engage with alleged “left wing extremism”. It’s a shame to see it go down like that.

The paper itself looks fine tbh. I’m not even mad; they have an ethics statement and addressed critique. The question is not whether AI is good in reviewing (it is, from my experience). The question is rather: (a) whom do we write for? And (b) do *I* want to encourage authors sending me AI papers?

I'm sorry, but I'll call it: King has jumped the shark

If I ever get knowledge that a reviewer chucked my paper through proprietary AI to do their review, I’m gonna flag a fucking ethical transgression, because I did not consent to that. My research is proprietary and under my copyright until I transfer it to the journal for publication.

This is not about who is more accurate, this is about ethics and moral values. And accountability. So tl;dr: This paper shows the value of using LLMs to improve your paper (on your own terms) until submission. But nothing else.

As long as we write papers, and as long as we read papers, LLMs can absolutely help in iterative improvement, but I require the final judgment to come from a human that can be held accountable, just as I can. I write for humans, and require humans to read it.

Recommended read on why we should not blindly trust “AI detectors,” a point I have been making for years and will continue to make, but @emilymbender.bsky.social is obviously much better at explaining why that is.

Dear community — do you know of great resources for education (OER) for computational social science training? I'm trying to collect a few things. I'm already aware of Bail's and Salganik's stuff and the GESIS CSS list on GitHub. Thanks!

After all, it turns out we didn’t need a swarm of AI agents to bring down the global internet. All it took was for a volunteer to write a small note on the PHP website. 🚬 ☕️

Had a chat with a Finnish colleague on Monday who said that, in the past, the Finnish army often just trained for attacks “from the east” but never mentioned Russia specifically until recently. Seems like the same will happen in GER as well soon.

Hallå Helsingfors! This week I’ll be spending time at the university of Helsinki to work on CSS teaching in an age of Gen AI, together with @matnel.bsky.social — and of course take one or another stroll to discover the city!

Raw-dogging Gemma 4 E4B heavily quantized on a tiny laptop to try to get some code produced is certainly … a special feeling. But alas, it's proprietary data, so no U.S. companies allowed ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

8,000 bucks for a MacBook with 128GB memory versus 16,000 bucks for an RTX 6000 with only 96. It is really odd that an Apple product would be the bargain, yet here we are. Also the MBP certainly runs more power efficient at about 90W or so under max load.

The thing is, we have reached a point in time where compute isn’t actually too bad. There is a lower threshold, sure, but once token rates are okay-ish, all that counts is having VRAM to keep those obscene models in memory.
