TW: Depression and suicide Over the years, I've lost five people to suicide. Friends, training partners, people I loved. Today it is eight years to the day since I lost one of my very best friends, Christian. I miss him terribly. 1/9

Last year I was feeling pretty down at a conference I was speaking at, and several of my friends from that traveling circus noticed and asked me how I was doing. Which, even if it was a question that I could not give a proper answer to, was a question that helped me tremendously. 8/9

Regular check-ins, no matter how short, help people feel that they are seen and valued. Taking the time to reach out to a friend gives them a sense of belonging. 6/9

I have friends that will just randomly send me a message asking how I'm doing and letting me know that they are always available if I need them. It seems like nothing, but even that small gesture does a lot for me. Even if I don't need it right then, and I can give a "Thanks! All good!" back. 7/9

Part of the point was to show people that you can't really tell who's struggling and who's not. All of us are what you'd consider relatively accomplished people, always friendly, sometimes funny and in general having a good time. Christian was the same. Our nickname for him was "happy-go-lucky". 4/9

I think it is important to reach out to your friends every now and again. Loneliness and depression feed each other. If you're struggling, letting someone know you need help is far from easy. So reach out to someone you haven't talked to in a while. 5/9

The reasons have been many, but a common theme has been loneliness and a belief that no-one could help them, not even themselves. It is a feeling that I can relate to all too well. I was lucky. I managed to get help before that feeling grew too much and became overwhelming. 2/9

A few weeks ago I had the privilege to participate in a panel on mental health at the Swetugg Conference in Stockholm organised by Stacy. None of us were health professionals, but all of us were people who knew this from the inside and we shared some of our stories. 3/9

"So you're saying you have all the basic features of a male, but they're rough, uncoordinated, and not guaranteed to work?"

Glenn F. Henriksen@henriksen.no

When men refer to themselves as "alpha males", I hear that in the context of software, where alpha versions are unstable, missing important features, filled with flaws, and not fit for the public.

We keep giving AI the fun jobs (coding, writing, making art) while we are stuck with the shit jobs (laundry, code reviews, resolving merge conflicts) what a disaster

ChatGPT advocates, please understand: many times when people ask you a question, it is because they are valuing your experience and perspective. Essentially, you are part of their community. When you answer with a ChatGPT screenshot, you are telling them that they are not a part of yours.

One of my favourite things on social media is when a man (yes, it's always a man) severely underestimates someone (usually a woman) and gets schooled accordingly. The comments are *chefs kiss* This is right up there withthe dude calling out Gail Simone, the Punisher writer.

1/This one's for my fellow #developers. Let's talk about Entity Framework; if you have the option to use Dotnet Core/EF for your business logic/data layers - including Postgres/MySQL on Linux - you really should take a hard look. EF + Linq gives you an amazing degree of control over your data.

I have 64 GB of RAM, yet I cannot leave the computer overnight without coming back to a message about some program being killed because memory was too low and I basically have to restart to get a working machine again...

If you think using GenAI to increase how fast your developers can write code, you should probably return your copy of "The Goal" and use the refund to buy a lottery ticket.

You should definitely put in a talk for JavaZone! It's a fantastic conference and a great place to both inspire and be inspired. And while you're at it, submit to #HelloStavanger as well! www.hellostavanger.no

I've often hesitated to join podcasts despite frequently speaking at conferences, possibly due to the format difference. It's time to try something new! I'll be recording with @davidgiard.bsky.social's Technology and Friends podcast this Tuesday. Check it out here: www.youtube.com/@technologya....

I'm not part of #academicSky, but I think it's seriously cool that BlueSky enables people building things like this!

*Please repost* @sjgreenwood.bsky.social and I just launched a new personalized feed (*please pin*) that we hope will become a "must use" for #academicsky. The feed shows posts about papers filtered by *your* follower network. It's become my default Bluesky experience bsky.app/profile/pape...

That's a new scam/spam. Just sending me a contract to sign on Upwork. Which seems to be a garbage platform that let's people send proposals to anyone with zero ways to report or block.

Holy memory hog, Batman! Why on earth does the JetBrains Rider plugin GitHub Copilot's "Language Server" use between two and four GB of RAM? The VS Code version is nowhere near that consumption...

What a world we live in. When literal facts are labeled as misinformation. Wild guess, but maybe it's because people don't understand the message and then just reports based on what they feel? We are truly in a post-factual society.

This video has now been disqualified by TikTok and labeled as misinformation. It is literally factually true and it is meant to push back on the rampant information and nonsense that’s happening on the platform right now. 🤦🏻‍♂️

Ah, great. So now people are finding "Meta" in some open source license in the TikTok app and thinking it's a sign that Meta has already taken over TikTok...

Do me a favor, friends who are on TikTok, go and repost this to try to push back against some of the nonsense conspiracy theories www.tiktok.com/t/ZT28V4ukK/

Management consultancies are using or promoting generative AI to propose reforms to education and it really needs to be resisted before it harms educators and students.

On Telegram I'm now getting spam messages almost every day, but I have to pay for Telegram Premium if I want to restrict who can DM me. And even if I pay, other premium users can force their way into my inbox. Not good.
