Hereditary is on TV and I don't understand why Toni Collette doesn't have as many Oscars as Meryl Streep. She should automatically and retroactively get one for everything she's ever done, even the 5 minutes she was in The Hours

I've had several Spanish book bloggers post positive reviews of my book since it came out over here; now those reviews are starting to get a bit of attention and I wonder, optimistically, if I might be looking at a "Big in Japan" type situation?

anyway character and narrative development is great, basically the things stories are made of, if what you are looking for are narratives where people who are already perfect do stuff where they beat irredeemable bad guys every time, i really can't even recommend children's books on this front

I think even some on the left are getting sick of talking about Epstein bc it feels like screaming into the void, but here's the thing: fuck you, this shit matters. These women matter. The fact that we are governed by someone who did this and got away with it matters. Keep screaming.

Okay, I deleted the original post because people didn't check the link at all and mistook my typo of "young men" seriously. I clearly meant young women. Not sure why this isn't a bigger story, but I read this entire report today. It's gutting. democrats-judiciary.house.gov/media-center...

A few months ago a documentary on queer history was released on Spanish television that used AI to do exactly this, and despite being incredibly interested in the subject I found the whole thing not just cringey but loathsome, like watching someone dig up Lorca's long missing corpse only to fuck it.

Okay okay it DID get better, in fact it got GOOD, but I can't stop wondering what the hell these people are drinking all day long that they call "coffee." It can't possibly be coffee, can it? I need a peer-reviewed essay on whether you could cultivate coffee 1 mile underground.

Of all the plot devices out there, amnesia has to be one of my least favorites. It's lazy, it feels like the writers just walking back on interesting ideas, and it's boring as shit. While we're on the subject: does Silo S3 ever get any better or nah?

When I was a kid literally the only "sit down" restaurant in town was this place called The Ground Round where you just periodically found bugs on your plate but didn't dare complain bc it was the *only* restaurant in town and you didn't want them to also start spitting in your food

Call me crazy but I kind of feel like engineering living beings for use as weapons of war ought to be a felony of some sort, didn't Frankenstein kind of cover this?

So is the Internet going BOOM? That's all I need to know. Explain it to me like I'm a 19th century farmer with a sudden incoming rat problem. Will locking the barn doors do enough (going private)? Or do I have to set my crops on fire and just move (delete all my shit)?

I repeated this same question to a tech at WordPress who laughed for a full line of text and then said "uh you're running an author website? There's nothing important on it, so you should be fine." Which, ouch.

Elected officials should be forced to stare at threatening images of icebergs for an hour every day. This is not just what we're destroying; this is the wrath that is coming for us. Awesome, numinous, beautiful and terrifying.

Really interesting thought! Not that I know of, but I've been out of the loop for ages. Anybody else got anything?

Fun thing! I'm looking at a copy of a book of summaries of Aristotle’s natural philosophy (Naturalis totius philosophiae paraphrases (1538)), and the book has a semi-circle mirror set into the backboard. Has any one seen this elsewhere? What's going on? A device to connect up with the Aristotle?

[DEEP BREATH, PLACES PALMS TOGETHER]: First of all - you know the UK isn't Europe, right?

WIRED@wired.com

The internet told them Europe was a social paradise. Turns out the trains are awful, the health care isn’t free, and people can be really mean.

If you want to know what sucks about Europe, actually, it's the things that aren't that different from the US. We have Nazis here too. Our racists are some kind of special, distilled variety found only in certain regions. The far right is one election cycle away from turning us into Trumplandia 2.0.

But do I regret moving here? Fuck no. It wasn't easy or cheap getting here, and it's definitely not easy or cheap to still have people back home, but my daily existence has improved immensely. I'm never worried about healthcare. The food is unlikely to kill me. And the trains DO run on time. Mostly.

I dunno, Wired, you could've talked to me about this, or maybe the any number of people I know who were born in the US but now happily live abroad. You got a problem with the trains? Have you ever tried to get to Brooklyn from Midtown Manhattan??

A one-year-old Black BABY was murdered and the state of Mississippi is claiming the white officer who did it was "justified". An absolutely horrifying outrage and injustice.

Ashton Pittman@ashtonpittman.bsky.social

JUST IN: The police shooting that killed 1-year-old Kohen Wiley as he sat in his mother’s lap in a Walmart parking lot in Senatobia, Miss., in June “was justified,” Mississippi Attorney General Lynn Fitch’s office said on Monday. Her office will not charge the white officer who shot the child.

I'm not often jealous of the folks back home (for REASONS) but missing out on the rerelease of THE DEVILS is killing me. This is foundational-level stuff for me, the deep Hesse-lore, and I'll never get to see it on the big screen 😭

Asher HELLbein@asherelbein.bsky.social

THE DEVILS has a lot to say generally about the ugly political underpinnings of religious inquisitions, but it's also really interesting as a text about how specifically strange Early Modern Europe really was
