I had to think a minute. I figured out I have known 9 Americans in Germany and 11 Americans in Sweden, not counting a lot more on temporary assignment for the BASF or the US mil. A whole 2 went home within 2 years of arrival. One was a drug addict and one returned to care some family member(s).

All the rest, as far as I can tell, really love their respective new lands. I think they all have worked to become American-Germans or American-Swedes rather than simply Americans in Germany or Sweden.

The UK is part of Europe, has started the conversation about becoming part of the EU once again, it’s led by a social democratic Prime Minister and you don’t know what you’re talking about, Joe.

Trump is loathed in the UK. The UK doesn’t have the death penalty, healthcare is free at the point of usage, handguns and assault rifles are banned and people don’t go on about god all day. Maybe you’ve been reading nonsense, Joe.

Everything is overpriced because billionaires own the country, Farage is still part of the landscape, your "left" prime minister is a joke, etc. I said on its way to, not yet, there is still hope.

"Loathed" is almost an understatement. The Trump baby balloon he had such a tantrum about during his first term is in the Museum of London now, isn't it? And the British people's view of him has only got worse since then. Even Nigel Farage is desperately trying to distance himself from him now. 😆

Gosh, things are different overseas, what a shock. It truly astonishes me that many americans expect UK and Europe to be just like US, without the disadvantages.

Meanwhile, continental Europeans are leaving the U.K. (especially london). What does that tell you? 🤷‍♂️ Americans: don’t diss our shitty trains & imperfect NHS-as we are not debating live-streaming the execution of a man in a wheelchair (just saying)

I moved to Japan years ago. When George W got re-elected I kinda felt America had no hope of being a decent place anymore. Can't say it's a paradise here, but I absolutely do not regret moving here one bit. Can't speak for Europe, but my neighbors aren't getting kidnapped.

Shocking! Major revelations! The UK is not actually a social paradise! Train service in Britain leaves something to be desired! The health care system has complications and is dealing with cuts! And British people often "take the piss"? Why are these details kept 🙊secret?

The claim that dishwashers are a luxury item here defined this nonsense from the start. Of course nowhere is perfect but don’t be ridiculous 🤣

You think you can just blow in here and instantly start getting your healthcare provided for free, courtesy of British people who have been paying in National Insurance contributions all their working lives? That is not how it works.

Did this four years ago. It’s not a paradise, if that’s what you expected that’s pretty silly. I’m pretty happy with my choice. And to the specific points here the trains are GREAT, I had to rush my four year old to the emergency room and was charged 18 euro, and people are almost comically nice.

Since it appears article is MOSTLY about the UK (I’m in Italy) I will say I spent 3 months there at beginning of this and while I loved it the people of Yorkshire (specifically Settle) were kind of dicks. If this is an article solely about the denizens of a small village not being nice, I’m on board

Yorkshire folk are well known for being ‘outspoken’ which is just code for being fucking rude. Sorry about that; please come back someday and try again on the other side of the Pennines.

Yeah but re Yorkshire they’re worried about gentrification. Most jobs not in London pay people like £30k they are not thrilled about comparatively rich Americans driving up housing costs. This is not like rocket science?

Just to be clear I had a great time in the UK, did a month in London, month in Edinburgh (a place I would LOVE to live), month in Settle. My kid was three at the time and people wouldn’t smile at him in Settle? Like wouldn’t acknowledge him smiling at them? It did have a great Booths!

Settle mentioned! I think you possibly don't understand the dynamic of dealing with rural Yorkshire folk. I moved to Yorkshire from another part of England about 20 years ago, and I'm still treated like an outsider in some situations.

There’s (I think) a Bill Bryson tale where someone moved to a small village in Yorkshire and found that no-one talked to him in the pub. For months. One night, fed up, he got plastered and yelled at everyone “When will you accept me?” An old man replied “50 years, son, and you’ll be dead by then”

'The internet told them Europe was a social paradise. Turns out the trains are awful, the health care isn’t free, and people can be really mean.' And then they moved to Europe.

“Boo hoo, as a pregnant new arrival I had to pay into the healthcare system that residents have been funding with taxes all their adult lives”? Do come on.

As a resident of the UK I can confirm it's pretty bad. The rise of the right wing, like people being openly racist, sexist and transphobic is pretty scary. The NHS has been gutted, understaffed and underfunded. Still, I prefer it to an insurance based model, everyone can use it not just the employed

I mean, yes it is, but also there are some pretty bad things happening in other countries too. An example of how moving won't solve all your problems

I think the transphobia may be worse in the UK because it's now legally compelled, there's very little devolved governments can do about it, and one of the wealthiest people in the country is bankrolling every bigot with a hate boner to force compliance with the most extreme take on the law.

Do you even have trains in the US? And you charge people for the ambulance that takes them to hospital, massacre kids with machine guns at school and .. oh let me think … re-elect Trump and burn the fucking planet. Your country is allied with Russia, take a seat.

Not really as crazy as people were reacting to it. It's basically three points: 1) Some people relocated and found it not what they expected and hard to adjust and are unhappy. 2) Americans' image of Europe is a bit wrong. 3) People on social media, particularly Reddit, are unkind and over the top.

I remember going to London and being like "oh right. All the shit that I would've said before now made me an anglophile told me that everyone here is a persnickitty little busy body and I would be miserable"

Perhaps someone could explain that Europe consists of 50+ different countries with a lot of good things and some bad. Nowhere is paradise but living here and having lived in US. The pros here far outweigh the cons there

disgusting yank pig in EU europe for 10 yrs: there is good & bad to it, much like moving anywhere. don't regret it. YMMV but I will never dissuade someone getting the fuck out of somewhere where they don't want to be. I have a dryer & dishwasher. could get AC easily but not worth it at this point.

No one anywhere on the Internet told anyone that the UK was a social paradise. Why does Wired suck so much lately??

I know an American who always complained about how "unfriendly" Brits were, and I kept telling her it's wasn't a British thing it was a big international city thing. Years later her work sent her to New York for 6 months and she told me I was right!

I've been to europe... the trains seemed amazing? I took the chunnel train, it was great? Took a train to the coast, great? And nothing is free? And the people seemed nice? I have no more "free" articles from wired, but I have a feeling this is a horrible one. Should I block wired?

Ohhhh but we are really big and there's like three people living in most states, so that's why we don't do trains. Yeah whatevs bruh, you still don't get to complain about another continent's trains. Them's the rules. Also, have you ever been in an Amtrak service, for real?

“I pay huge amounts of taxes and an immigration surcharge to access the NHS services—so no, the health care is not free here.” I can see why she didn't want to use her real name...

This is a good article. It’s not easy to leave one’s country and live in another. I would note that Greece does not have a right wing government as your piece implies. Its center right and is far less right wing than today’s extremist GOP.

But the internet is now flooded with "Did you know I had to ask for iced water?" posts from entitled Americans, so we're all winners if you really think about it.

When people describe socialized medicine as “free,” obviously it gets funded through taxes since it needs to get paid from somewhere. There are numerous studies that show the US healthcare system costs its citizens more while providing a worse service.

Nobody has ever said it was a paradise. If you don’t understand there’s arseholes everywhere then I can’t help you.

Imagine not even grasping that 'Europe' (the political entity) is 27 different fucking countries, the geographical entity even more. We're going to need *details* you cryarses, and then for you to not lump them under 'Europe' Dickheads.

Having trouble understanding the haters here. It’s an article about Americans moving to places without knowing what they were getting into, and then Finding Out. Lots of people move away from home and then find out they miss home! It’s good to remember!

Hmm. Dishwashers and clothes dryers are “a luxury” in the UK? I know the reporter is directly quoting a disgruntled expat American, and these things are relative, but it’s not simply not true. Disappointing — and at the start of the article too.

I live in the UK, my partner is American. She gets her dental work done here in the UK because paying Bupa full whack is less expensive than the extra she has to pay in the US on top of the monthly dental insurance fees plus she gets a higher quality of service.

It's sometimes gobsmacking how utterly ignorant many Americans are about the world outside the USA. Then you see nonsense like this from the people who are employed to inform their readers about such things.

Having moved many times this just highlights they sampled spoiled Americans who were isolated from the issues in the USA by their wealth & support network. Spell It arsehole or asshole they are always the same.

I lived abroad for decades, and it's not for everyone. As someone who never had health insurance before leaving, I can say it's better. If you have health insurance from a company that will transfer you to other continents on request, I can easily see how it's a step down though.

To be fair the UK (which is where most of the people in this article went) is not representative of what people actually like about Europe

well, going to UK is very different from going to France, and going to France is very different from going to Spain. Hell, living in Paris is absolutely different to living in Rennes for example. Capital cities across Europe are a bit more homogeneous, but yet.

I can’t even give Wired the click to read whatever trash is there, and I’m a subscriber! Labeling all of Europe as the same is like saying Mississippi is like Manhattan. No wonder Americans are so stupid, look at the news headlines we glance at all day, subtly lying.

I know. Literally have crossed the border from Berlin to Poznán, Poland and it's completely different. Different language, culture, currency. Even within the UK I found it pretty different going from Wales to Scotland to England. These articles are ridiculous.

I moved from the decaying seat of a former empire run by conservative lunatics to the decaying seat of a former empire run by conservative lunatics and nothing got better 😔

Trains are still ay least as solid as they arein the USA, health care clearly less expensive and mean people are everywhere. Suré, paradise on earth is not achieveable, but reálky, this makes little sense

The ones who moved to the UK clearly didn't do their homework - I mean, who moves countries WHILE PREGNANT without checking what services are available/ they'll be entitled to? Also, they all sound utterly insufferable.

Everyone has their own experiences; we moved to Italy 6 years ago (not fleeing anything) and haven't looked back. The trains in Italy are good, the health care is mostly free, and people take a while to warm up but will eventually welcome you. None of those 3 are true of the UK.

Er, in my experience of living in Britain for several decades, the last two are true of here as well. I grant you the trains, but *some* of them are good and at least they exist, unlike the US beyond the Eastern seaboard.

I think in the UK trains depend a lot on where you are. I've had terrible experiences in the South, but generally have had better luck in the North (knock on wood). The bigger point is the article uses the experience of a small few to make a larger point, which I disagree with.

A matter of expectations, I guess. If you've lived your whole life in a car-centric area like Southern US, and you've heard you won't need a car to live and work in 'Europe', boy are you in for a shock if you move to suburban England.

Ah yes, Europe is terrible, best stay in super safe America where everyone is incredibly nice, luxury abounds, they don't speak foreign and you don't have learn abt other pesky cultures or difference. You wouldn't handle petrol prices or navigating steep difficulty of public transportation anyway.

And dryers are really common. I don’t where this “there are no dryers in Europe” talking point comes from. Did an American see someone hanging washing up outside and decide it was out of necessity rather than choice?

We moved to Croatia for almost 2-years. If we could have found a visa to stay longer we would have. It wasn't paradise*, but it was better than a lot of places in the US. *In many ways it was paradise.

What a poor article. Unfollow to follow. There are varying standards and cultures across Europe but most have better public transport

We moved to Spain, not because of Trump, but because of family and lifestyle. The trains are clean, comfortable and run on time. We have to have private Health insurance, but it's affordable and has good coverage. I can't say enough about how warm and friendly the people are here.

It's not even true. Healthcare in the UK is free at the point of use for British citizens. I believe, like every other country, there's a cost for immigrants to stop health tourism. This should be one of the first things to research for anyone emigrating anywhere.

We're only mean to stupid American twats; and that only really since fucking Trump - TWICE you fucking morons. You don't even have fast passenger trains. We have free healthcare - you fucking die broke. LOLz.

“We at the computer magazine interviewed four people who anonymously told us they were surprised that upending their lives and moving across the world didn’t turn out exactly the way they thought it would.” Hard-hitting stuff.

Wired has become a shell of its former self since the corporate buyout. If you want endless fawning over Silicon Valley tech bros, with tacit approval of their nefarious plans for us all, go ahead, read wired. It’s nothing like the edgy magazine of decades past. 🤷‍♂️

Disappointed in you, Wired. Few of the examples of Europe’s right-leaning governments seem to be as unhinged as the US far-right/MAGA/Trumpism/etc.

We have our own subspecies of this style in Canada: "I moved from one big city to another, & you won't *believe* why I moved back!" Expectation management is a thing.

So don’t move to the UK, which left the EU some time ago 🤷🏼 Been living in Ireland for a good while now & it’s brilliant. Yes, there are some inconveniences (no pay-at-the-pump outside of Dublin) but overall, the quality of life is much higher & I don’t have to worry my kid might get shot at school

These people are babies. Immigration is tough for everyone. There's issues everywhere. I owe Berlin and Brandenberg despite the weird anti slavic attitude toward me (I'm not even slavic) a huge thank you with the higher quality of medical care, transportation and food.

Between this article and the other praising Temu Hitlers “flying” clown car it makes me wonder why Wired decided to pivot to the WSJ, Washington Post, CBS News angle

The UK isn't Europe, Europe isn't monolithic, talking about it like it is makes you look like grade school morons from a holler somewhere, people are people and plenty of European cultures are far nicer than American culture - and our trains don't even hold a candle to the worst you'll find there.
