People being mean to Malcolm Gladwell about this, but it's hard to argue that the police have enough resources when, for instance, none of the frequent flyers on Jeffrey Epstein's 'Lolita Express' have been investigated or faced any consequences.
“In recent years, many Americans have decided that their country’s problem was that it had too many police officers, when in fact its problem was that it had too few,” Malcolm Gladwell writes:
We missed Hinsh and Rutter. With Gross way off it in the first half too we could barely string two passes together and Leeds should have been out of sight. Both full backs poor. OTOH Babis was fun, Yalcouye good, Gross back to himself and leading the fightback after half time. Draw seems fair #bhafc

Having played football back in Europe with my school and a die hard follower, I thought the decision was completely unfair. It was unintentional and I’m glad common sense has prevailed. Huge boost for the US team tomorrow.
Preferred Arsenal to most of the other 'big teams' before this season, but they've been incredibly graceless winners.
Say what you want about Chelsea fans but when they were winning stuff playing ugly they said 'dgaf we're winning' and they meant it. Arsenal fans are incredibly needy. They can't just enjoy winning, they need everyone to be nice and ignore that they're horrible to watch.

The lobby journos are slavering for Streeting, but are conscious it would be too brazenly absurd to kick Starmer out over this, only to replace him with someone even more embroiled in it. They'll wait for an issue where they can paint Starmer as being too soft on the left, and oust him over that.
It’d be more accurate to say Starmer was elected by lying like fuck to audience after audience about his intentions, and it looks very much like a big chunk of the press were very well aware that he was lying and declined to inform the public. In that sense, yes, Streeting is the natural successor.
Pour one out for the lobby journos today. Whatever else you think about McSweeney, he really had them wrapped round his little finger. "Yes he lied shamelessly and frequently, but it was the mean, silly left that forced him to do it"
But yes, the drift in government is partly down to how you just cannot reconcile some of what he believes is necessary with what people are prepared to accept from a Labour government. It is why the government has ended up so often saying things and then actually doing the opposite.

I think the last 10 years have shown that the infamous Jerry Sadowitz joke about Gary Glitter ("he's one of our most famous rock stars, he should be allowed to fuck whoever he wants") is in fact, what many of the elite actually believe.
even more bleak than that: there are *people* who matter, most of them very rich men, and then there is an enormous class of people who don’t matter at all, to whom those men can say and do anything. When the latter class sought justice against the former, the rich guys went *absolutely apeshit*.
Concise summary: "Is Trump a fascist? Yes, according to the first 5 sources I checked, but I had already decided the answer was 'no'. So I kept looking until I found one source that with a technicality we could disqualify him on, and ta-da, a headline the reassures our readers"

"Sure, Trump just invaded a sovereign country with no justification, but have you considered that he bullied the Nobel committee into giving his fascist, puppet-dictator-in-waiting a peace prize?" The centrists today.
It’s not that simple. I’m not saying I approve the action, but does Starmer want to appear to be siding with Maduro’s regime, or the democratic opposition in Venezuela, whose leader Maria Machado just won the Nobel peace prize. What happens next is crucial.
The idea that centrists demand 'vision' is very amusing. Centrists dislike him for failing to deliver on his promise: a technocratic managerial correction to get the status quo working smoothly again. (Besides at least half the centre still likes him, that's why his approval isn't -100%)
The right dislikes him because they believe he is too far to the left, the left dislikes him because they believe he is too far to the right, and the centre doesn't like him because he lacks a clear vision for the UK.
Let's imagine for a moment Paul Ovenden had resigned for saying horrific anti Semitic things about a prominent Jewish politician. In that scenario does he still get handed a platform to hold forth about the state of the nation in The Times and Radio 4?
Paul Ovenden resigned for being a racist and should stay in his troglodyte cave instead of inflicting his crap opinions on the rest of us
It's a workmanlike run through of stuff that's obvious to most thinking people. And it misses one very key point: You don't get establishment figures in the press/socials/TV defending the actions of the UAE or China. Israel's prominent apologists fuel a cycle of (justifiable) outrage.
I did have to click through just to make sure this wasn't Steve addressing his relationship to Jeffrey Epstein. It's not. www.theguardian.com/books/2025/s...
