Saved a PC Engine LT from the scrap pile. The caps had leaked everywhere. Voltage regulator was dead and the LCD bias transformer (which has no replacement part anywhere) was broken. Subbed it with a DC-DC booster inverter. First boot, screen lit up. #PCEngine #retrogaming #consolerepair

In one day, two politicians - Bolsonaro in Brazil and Vucic in Serbia - with ties to Trump have lost surprise elections thanks to high turnout. The rise of the international far-right is not inevitable.

I figured this would be an easy fix and I'd score an incredibly cheap remote without much work. Disassembled it, put it through some white vinegar and some evaporust. Afterwards I used a fiver glass pen and I threw it in the ultrasonic too for good measure.

I think it turned out quite alright. The nickel plating has seen better days but, lo and behold, it does work. 🙂

Someone asked me if I could fix their PS1, because it wasn't detecting disks. Why yes, yes I can. The stem on the lid switch was broken, so I replaced it with a new one. #retrogaming #PlayStation

The contacts for the on/off switch were a bit tarnished but that wasn't the issue. Neither is the motor, I tested it with the bench PSU when I had it apart and it works fine.

Put them through white vinegar and evaporust baths. In the end, I decided I may as well scrap them. Put some new ones in.

However, once I put new ones in, the car doesn't work.

Also serviced the motor and the transmission gears.

Dug out the contacts to try and restore them.

At least I managed to make this switch flip again. For as long as I can remember, this thing never budged, not once, not ever.

Performed some maintenance on the controller and cleaned it up. Looks way better than before. It had years of caked on dust.

Last Guardian 2 is a semi-well-known (all ages) RPG for the PC98. however, i will bet you can't find anything about the elusive Windows 95 release. anyway i just got it in, and the CD is jam-packed with data (649MB), including goodies like wallpapers and an unreleased SC-88 MIDI soundtrack. enjoy! 😸

Removed all of the old capacitors and treated the areas with white vinegar, since some of them actually gave off a fishy smell. Then cleaned with isopropyl and installed the new capacitors. That was a bit of a fight, my 10uF 16V ones were a tad on the big size for some areas.

Removed the old X-Reset and installed a new cleaner one with a nifty QSB by ConsolesUnleashed.

Now we're talking, reflowed all the solder joints, swapped out 2 capacitors (until I get the values I'm missing for a full recap) and the green speckles are now gone.

Picking out new capacitors to fully recap the mainboard. Look at those original bulgy boys. 😄 They lived a long life, their service is appreciated, now it's time to retire.

That's certainly not helping. It seems like a lot of joints on the PSU are cracked and dull.

My kid went rummaging around some cupboards at my parents' house and found my old transformers models. I remember spending a lot of time with these, enacting fights between Optimus and Megatron.
