Check out our ancient DNA paper on the maritime Punic civilization! 🦴🧬🌊
We find that their Levantine Phoenician cultural ancestors contributed surprisingly little ancestry to Punic sites in the central and western Mediterranean! (1/4)

🚨 Ancient DNA Alert 🚨
Do you depend on BWA aln, and worry that the world’s HPC clusters are pivoting towards GPUs?
Fear no more!
We here present G-ALN, a GPU implementation that is >6 times faster and produces byte-identical outputs to BWA aln!

I am happy to share the first preprint of my PhD! We developed mixKIN, an ancestry-aware kinship estimation tool for low-coverage genomes. By accounting for ancestries, it allows us to reconstruct genetic kinship accurately even in complex or admixed populations. www.biorxiv.org/content/10.6...
A PhD project in my group to work on the sequencing of whole animal genomes from mosquito blood meals is open to applications, through the @nrpdtp.bsky.social.
Quite the saga I found myself involved in! Was a stimulating way to spend my evenings. Highly impressed by the folks at I4R and the important work they're doing.
Our chair and a few replicators investigated a paper about elite footballers. And missed the bigger story.
An independent researcher showed us what we had failed to see.
This is I4R’s CRAVE–football investigation. It starts with a PNAS paper.

Given several new followers here, I'm posting the link to our Slack group "genetic genealogy science".
We post and discuss manuscripts on phasing/imputation, IBD, recombination, demographic inference, ancient DNA, ancestry/admixture, etc.
All are welcome.

Great to see @annikafreudiger.bsky.social paper published! 🎉
We analyzed how genetic markers are used to estimate relatedness in wild animals - a big field with 2861 relevant publications. 📈🧬
Even in 2026 mainly STRs are used - and we argue for low coverage WGS data and a simple aDNA estimator.
New in MEC!
@annikafreudiger.bsky.social et al. assess genetic relatedness on rhesus macaques and find that low-coverage whole-genome sequencing offers an accurate, cost-effective alternative to widely used methods.

It is great to now have a proper way to cite pileupCaller! The code to generate pseudohaploid genotypes from BAMs is one of the most quoted github code chunks in human ancient DNA research.
Just published in JOSS: 'PileupCaller: A command-line tool to sample genotypes from low-coverage sequencing data of ancient DNA' https://doi.org/10.21105/joss.08634

New paper alert 🚨
Researchers at #CPGStlhm have analyzed ancient genomes from an Islamic cemetery in Ibiza (950–1150 CE) 🏖️
They found a highly diverse community with ancestry from Europe and North Africa!
The paper was published in @natcomms.nature.com

We just published a brief preprint on aDNA from two Medieval Ottonic emperors. 🧬👑
We confirm via IBD segments that remains attributed to Otto "the Great" and "Saint" Heinrich are third-degree relatives. As historically attested - suggesting that they are authentic. ✅️
doi.org/10.64898/202...
(1/3)
Their two Ys are a perfect match too - as in the historic relationship. ✅️
They both are in a R1b haplogroup that is very rare today. The whole male lineage of emperors (which died out with Saint Henry) did not leave a big legacy!
Shoutout to FamilyTreeDNA for a productive collaboration. 🙌
(2/3)
Sequencing the emperors is not mere celebrity genomics.
Authentic remains from Medieval people with known life histories build a ressource for improving bioarchaelogical methods (like mapping C14 reservoir effects).
And the genomes will also help identifying other Medieval elites.

What happens when violence targets the future of a society?
Our new paper in Nature Human Behaviour examines one of Europe’s largest prehistoric mass graves and finds evidence for selective violence directed against women and children in the Early Iron Age.

(2/2) Using whole-genome sequencing (WGS) and STR data from a Rhesus macaque population, we show that low-coverage WGS data, even at 0.05x, have better accuracy than STR data for relatedness estimates.
We therefore advocate for WGS data!

#AI may indeed exacerbate our bad academic habits:
#LLM science summaries were nearly five times more likely than human-authored science summaries to contain broad generalizations (95% CI [3.06, 7.70], p < 0.001).
And newer models over-generalized more; not less!
doi.org/10.1098/rsos...#philSci
Because AI models are trained on current research practices, they may exacerbate our tendencies like overselling results from limited data, overinterpreting statistical significance, & quickly claiming causality, especially because they are even better at generating interpretations of any results
This smells distinctly like collider bias and/or selection bias and/or regression to the mean... You simply can't select teen prodigies, and world class athletes rom databases, and go run regressions without serious consideration of the selection process!
"Most top achievers (Nobel laureates and world-class musicians, athletes, chess players) demonstrated lower performance than many peers during their early years. Across the highest adult performance, peak performance is negatively correlated with early performance" www.science.org/doi/10.1126/...
Happy to share my work with my advisor Zachary Szpiech! Why are associations between ROH & complex traits inconsistent across studies? We use realistic simulations to show how demographic history and genetic architecture interact to shape the phenotypic impact of ROH. www.biorxiv.org/content/10.6...

As I told the CNN, without details and data it is not possible to assess the claims.
More importantly, the scientific value of this media campaign, balanced against the possible stigmatization of individuals with these real conditions today, is highly questionable. edition.cnn.com/2025/11/13/s...
Putting aside the deeper issues of why this analysis was done and how it has been promoted, the choice to broadcast a tv show before releasing a preprint should make people skeptical of the results. How can one be sure of their scientific claims?
