Anne Olhoff shared some positive news on #climate amidst a depressing update:
"From 2025 to 2026, a slight increase in fossil fuel emissions were offset by lower emissions from land use. It is too soon to declare that global #emissions have plateaued or #peaked."

Victory for Lula, who has already reduced Amazon deforestation by 70% since 2022, means there is now a chance of ending deforestation of the rainforest entirely

Katie White, UK Minister speaking at the UNEP emissions gap report launch yesterday:
"This summer, was the hottest ever in the UK, with unprecedented wildlifes"
"Our task is to hold the line as far as possible to 1.5 degrees."
@katiewhitemp.bsky.social@unep.org@ingerandersen.bsky.social
UNEP's Inger Anderson @ingerandersen.bsky.social also pointed out: "Some G20 countries have shown sustained emissions reductions"
"Additional policy action can deliver deep cuts."

I particularly took note of these wise words from @katiewhitemp.bsky.social
"Every fraction of a degree matters. Every bit of warming we avoid lessens the risks to people's lives."
"Take methane for example, tackling methane is one of the most effective things we can do."

Several questions from the audience pointed out the incongruity of this report launching the same day as UK approved Jackdaw gas field due to energy security (even though it will hardly contribute to UK demand...) Lets hope the UK holds the line on Rosebank. The world is in a hole. Stop digging!
The chance to keep global warming below 1.5°C with no overshoot is gone.
But urgent action can still limit the overshoot and bring warming back to 1.5°C by 2100.
Current policies, however, put the 🌎 on course for up to 2.8°C this century.

Shocking to see this report published on the same day as the UK government approve new drilling for fossil fuels. We need climate action and leadership now!
Out today, the UNEP Emissions Gap Report 2026, with our new chapter (five) on where the world stands across the action areas of the global stocktake, and what we must do, together, to limit exceedance of 1.5°C🧵 Co-led with @sophieboehm.bsky.social and @louisejeffery.bsky.social
Not related to climate - but I just learned France has a law where you can donate unused annual leave to a colleague with a seriously ill child. This is an amazing idea! France is awesome.

🧵Today, while my dishwasher was being fixed (or unable to be fixed), I had a thought:
👀💡 Would a "circular economy" where dishwashers can be fixed more easily create more local jobs?
💡 Imagine if dishwashers were designed to have parts that could be replaced, rather than having to buy a new one when one part breaks (right now the parts are costly and specific to each brand and model)
This would create more local repair jobs rather than only factory jobs!
#jobs#greeneconomy
There already seems to be research out there about the job creation potential, which could be useful in a time of concern about job losses.

I get that there are strategic defence issues at stake. But reducing our dependence on foreign gas and oil is a strategic national defence issue!
@lukepollard.bsky.social@swiftonsecurity.com
Errr.... right, so UK is having to find more money for defence against Russia...
by cutting funding for heat pumps that get us off gas...
thereby keeping us dependent on an energy commodity *weaponised* by Russia & international conflict.

Whether it's politics, social media, the environment or countless other issues, there's intense debate over the need for new policies and legislation when so often what is required is simply the proper enforcement of existing rules and regulations.
In the BBC, the Electoral Commission and Ofcom, the UK's far-right has three very willing little helpers. But it does not have to be that way. All it needs is a government to remind them of their responsibilities. Sadly, we don't have one of those.
Also, saving forests isn't just a "nice to have" - tropical forests are essential for the world's water supplies, rainfall patterns and climate stability #nature#investment#ecosystem
This summer, many, many news reports failed to make the connection between extreme weather events and climate change. So we wondered — have journalists made the connection between the deadly glacier collapse and flooding in Nepal and climate change? The good news? Many. Here's a thread...
"Analysts warn that the rate of ice melt in the Himalayas threatens water security for up to 1.65 billion people in the wider region"
Climate change impacts hit Nepal...
Awful this also coincides with Musk's cuts to emergency aid budgets.
